Have you ever wanted to learn how an alien bird-bug plays the horn? An exploration of Ripley’s incredible speculative biology project ‘Birgworld.’
---
Artist’s Tumblr: / iguanodont
Artist’s Twitter: / iguanodentist
The Birg Project is a worldbuilding series that brings to life an expansive alien ecosystem, but also delves into the most minute cultural details of its central intelligent species. Created by the brilliant artist Ripley, The Birg Project doesn’t just explore the biology of its titular aliens, but also imagines how they put on clothes, how they play the horn, even how they sneeze.
Also called ‘Birdbugs,’ these extraterrestrials superficially resemble a cross between Earth birds and Earth bugs - and have developed a level of intelligence similar to our own.
So, for this entry into the archive, we’ll explore the incredible world of the Birgs. Now, let’s explore this alien planet on both a macro and micro scale…

The stylization helps make these aliens super cute and readable, really feels like a living world! The Nausicaa inspiration is really cool, I just read the manga at the start of this year and it has so many beautiful illustrations and world building details. Ripley did such a fantastic job making the Birg's look both decidedly non-Terran, but also extremely expressive and personable. I also hugely appreciate how she has imagined "scaled-up" insectile anatomy, or at least "insectile" by human standards. She has very cleverly worked out ways around the longstanding problems of speculative creature making that involve bringing invertebrate anatomy to vertebrate sizes :D

Worldbuilding is arguably just as important as a narrative in any story. A fleshed out world will give the characters actions and motivations more weight and flavor, especially with context of that characters beliefs or culture. Ripley is no doubt going to go places in that department.

the birg are rather cute which is surpsing consider they have the same mouth as one of the most phobia inducing species on earth. though i wonder if the birg have the same sense of "cuteness" as humans as it essentially was a survival mechanicsm to make us protect and care for our offspring so traits like big eyes and big heads were desireable to us and it seems this holds true for the birgs children bigger eyes and heads as well.
@catpoke9557
@catpoke9557 Жыл бұрын
It's likely a very universal trait to find big eyes and heads cute because your eyes and brain need to be a certain size to function properly. So it's common for infant animals to have these traits no matter the species. Birgs likely have a similar standard of cuteness as we do.
@drvurruct2274
@drvurruct2274 Жыл бұрын
@@catpoke9557 I'd argue its actually, at-least partly, an accident on evolution's part. Your eyes don't grow in size nor shrink, but your head grows. This appears to be as well done as the Birrin. I wonder if at some stage there could be a crossover. If this is happening at about the same time, it would likely be the Birrin who visit first as they already have spaceflight. Their worlds are almost opposites as well, with Birg being a highly seasonal with deep winter and Birrin being largely scorched desert with little seasonal changes.
@Rum-Runner
@Rum-Runner Жыл бұрын
That would also be very interesting for their contrasting themes. The Birg Project seems to focus largely on the Birg’s attempts to coexist with their environment whereas the Birrin Project is portraying the Birrin’s struggle to overcome it. This and the Birrin Project are some of my most favorite speculative evolution projects out there. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy anything to do with evolution, but I am far more interested by anthropology. Tbh, this project feels *less* like speculative evolution than it does speculative *anthropology* and I enjoy that so much.

these hypothetical creatures a actually really pretty looking. If they ended up being real space exploring creatures, were friendly, and we happened upon them I would 100% try to have one as a friend. EDIT: Also we need a bunch of people who are interested in things like this to just collaborate on making multiple planets worth of ecosystems and them pull them all together into a space game. It would be so amazing to go through a game full of so many different worlds in a game. I don't even care what kind of game. Exploration, fps, survival, literally anything.

@@The_WhitePencil Spore is more messy, as the creatures you design are randomly spread across planets with other people's creatures, it'd be cool if each planet was it's own ecosystem, designed by one person or a team.

I keep meaning to do a speculative biology project of my own design... This is a really interesting divergence from most speculative biology projects I've seen. The ecosystem - while elaborate and well-thought out in its own right - functions to give context to the lifestyles of the birgs, rather than simply existing for its own sake. While this principle of storytelling within a speculative ecosystem isn't unique, this project feels markedly more intimate, almost domestic in its presentation than most.

This just gave me an idea - which is an Alternate Earth in which humans don't exist only mythological creatures do. Instead, Phoenixes, Qilins, Hydras, Kitsunes, Sleipnirs, etc exist how could the realistic* biology of these mythological creatures be like? Also, perhaps some of these mythological creatures could develop technology and become spacefaring civilizations and begin colonizing the moon, and other planets in the solar system........

Check out Draconology on Deviant Art by VikasRao. It's a project where homo sapiens never evolved (though some other species of humans did, and they are in the tribal era currently) and lots of mythical animals exist. Primarily dragons and similar, but there are also some other things like HIGHLY modified 'mermaids.' They don't look remotely human, they're just primatomorphs that are adapted to an aquatic lifestyle. There's also unicorns, which look kind of like a cross between a rhino and a horse. Griffins, which look like pterosaurs crossed with birds... so on and so forth. It's the exact thing you're looking for. All the animals are physically possible in real life and have a lot of thought put into them.

About time! I sure would like to see more speculative biologists artist going to more details like this more often. Myself, I often wanted to do a project like this. But I always have gotten too busy in my own life and bits and pieces of a similar idea have always been staying on the shelf or hanging on my wall. I get weird ideas like if you were putting on a pair of pants that was made for a dinosaur, would the pants have a third leg for the tail. And if you were wondering through alien library, how bizarre would it actually be to look through a anatomy book, or even something about their art. And if you were lost in a habited alien world would it actually be safe to eat the food, or to even be physically touched. I think there's a lot of amazing ideas like this that people just kind of secretly think about and never really seem to work on any great detail. But I see it as a very untapped source.✌️
