No ha destacado nunca por tener facilidad para el agudo, pero sí un centro aterciopelado y bellísimo y al mismo tiempo una presencia en escena y unas dotes de actor que emociona y hace creíbles sus personajes, Por esto es uno de los más grandes de la historia de la música.

Arnold Amaral Mrs Pepita Embil was born in Spain. They moved to Mexico in 1946. PD and his sister several years later.

I wish there was more detail to who the singers other than son and mother. And what were they singing? Would anybody that can interpret to English please response. The performance was beautiful.

Hi Karen. That's Placido Domingo, one of the greatest tenors ever alive (for many of us the greatest, period). Her mother, the lady singing with him, had been a singer in her youth too, and back in the 30s, together with the basque music choir she was a member of, had recorded this song in Paris whilst in a tour. It's quite a moving moment since Placido was performing in her mother's homeland, San Sebastian (Donosti), and the audience was paying tribute to her too. Also, because of the beautiful song they chose for the occasion: "Haurtxo Txikia" (or "Haurtxo Polita", as it's also known), is a traditional basque lullaby written in her mother language, euskera. By the way, this is an ancestral and isolate language, completely unrelated to any other language of the Indo-European branch (such as english or spanish), and completely unintelligible for non speakers like him, that's why he needed help with the lyrics. More kudos to him.
