When the first Taken movie hit theaters, it seemed Liam Neeson was on his way to a redemption in the action movie genre. Taken put Liam Neeson into a new light for movie going audiences. Though the popularity led to an immediate green light of 2 sub-par sequels. Both Taken 2 and Taken 3 proved that the magic was not going to last. But what exactly happened to the Taken franchise?

I'd argue that the high point of Taken was never any set piece. It was Neeson's iconic phone call - that said all you needed to know about what his character could do when provoked. And it's not exactly replicable since the action movie surrounding it was very choppy.

Taken. Iron Man. The Dark Knight. Damn, I'd never realized what a year 2008 was for film industry! Those three films each paved a different way for movies in their genre/franchise going forward. And as a side note, one my all-time personal favorites was also released that year: Speed Racer!

I think my biggest problem with Taken 2 is my problem with the end of Taken 1… Darn near leveled Paris by himself and then completely destroyed the Shiek’s yacht security. The Shiek thought threatening his daughter would work. Had I been the Sheik I would have said “hey… this is a bad deal. Take your daughter, some money, and let’s call it quits.” Then we would have parted our ways. But no. He thought he could outlast ole boy who just killed his ENTIRE SECURITY TEAM. Seriously. So when the second came out and they said oh, we gotta get this guy, it was like… really‽ Your sons got killed trafficking women. You really think you SHOULD do this? If you wanna die, sure. But why not take the “L” and go about the rest of your life!

What makes the first Taken so interesting is that its premise makes the film a one and done deal, despite having a character who would normally justify sequels because of his backstory and what he is capable of. But the premise here is so simple that Taken is meant to be a singular film because nothing else can come of it. To do a sequel either means to do the same thing again or to do something different that doesn't feel like Taken. I thought the same thing of John Wick when I first heard of a sequel being made, believing that it was a film meant to be a one and done like Taken. But the big difference I've come to realize is that John Wick has an expansive world that allows for sequels to happen, while Taken does not.

I'd actually be on board for a movie where Bryan, as he's aged past fighting prowess, gets killed by some group or another. Kim walks into a warehouse to find him tied to a chair, his face burnt, railway spikes in his kneecaps, puffy cheeks and purple eyes, and the back of his shirt splayed open with cuts all along his upper back. Clearly, someone wanted information and he couldn't give it. In his final words, he tells her a name. Kim decides to gain agency and avenge him. She starts training, puts on a bunch of muscle until she looks like Sara Sigmundsdottir, gets a cool haircut and learns guerilla warfare as well as survival as she goes on the hunt. Maybe we could get flashbacks of him teaching Kim survival skills throughout her life as well. By the end of the movie, she's killed the man who initiated Bryan's death but is barely alive herself when she gets a scheduled email. It's from Bryan, sent days before his kidnapping and torture. In it, he says he didn't want her to find his killers, he wanted her to give the name to the authorities and he just wanted her to live a peaceful life, be her own person and forget the mistakes of her father. But, it's too late, she tears up as she uses a water pipe to help her stand and hobbles away from the camera, towards civilization. Depending who directs and writes it, I'd watch that.

I had a similar idea to yours actually (or a prewrite for it in my head). Only that would've been my idea for Taken 2. Our protagonist, Bryan, would be a bit older (obviously). While away on a musical apprenticeship program in London, Kim (older) vanishes again. Lenore, Brian's ex-wife, ask for Bryan's help in locating her. But something is amiss. The more Brian investigates, the more that it appears that Kim did not want to be found. But why? That way that I had it in my head, Brian finds out that although Kim has a knack for music, her apprenticeship program is nothing more than a mere cover. She's actually an agent for an agency investigating and hunting down human traffickers. A job went wrong, and now the traffickers want her dead. Brian would reunite with Kim as they try to survive a battle with the traffickers as well as an internal conflict with one another (not a whiny one though)...... Brian is worried. The events from the first film traumatized Kim (especially losing Amanda). There is a bit of her father's determination when dealing with traffickers. Unfortunately, she also has some of his ruthlessness, which was probably what caused whatever assignment she was on to go sideways and officially put her on the organization's hit list. He loves his daughter, but should he try to stop Kim to try to point her into a better world, or let her seek whatever retribution she is looking for and follow in her father's footsteps? Either way, the father and daughter must try to work together to survive. I think that would've been a better idea. But I'm no writer.....

Yeah i wouldnt really call it a "downfall". It was a one off movie that became one of the most popular franchises of the 2010s and it went on longer than anyone would have expected. The first one didnt really set up a sequel, it was just so popular everyone demanded one and the sequel was so popular they thought "why not make it a trilogy?" since trilogies are popular in media, and despite the plot being stretched pretty thin by that point and the 2nd movie not really setting up a sequel and tying many of the plot lines up the 3rd film was still highly successful and earning roughly 8x its budget back (anything above 2x the budget is considered a "success"). They made a tv series and despite that having being a generic series with almost zero connection to the movies beyond names, being made by nobody recognizable, it was still somewhat successful going on for 2 seasons and garnering a decent rating of 66/100 on IMBD. The movies alone earned nearly $1bil on a $118mil budget and went on longer than anyone expected, seems like a resounding success to me, especially since it helped spawn a slew of similar movies/shows like John Wick and The Equalizer and its one of the most recognizable franchises of the 2010s.

During the mid 2000's the only action movie saga I can remember watching every release was the Bourne movies. Unfortunately, after Bourne Ultimatum in 2007 the franchise took a dive. It's really interesting that Taken came out the year after that movie. I don't think Matt Damon is an action star, but in the Bourne movies he was, so when Legacy came out it was kind of like losing one of the only bona-fide action stars of the 2000's. Now, looking back, I can't really think of any stars like that from the past 10 years or so that didn't star in superhero movies. Reeves as John Wick is pretty much the only one.

Have it be a constant point of narrative tension that Brian Mills as a character is also getting on in years. Show him struggling with fights he previously would have won with ease. Liam neeson's age is not what causes franchise to go down. The producers and the studio hired very weak writers who could not write an appropriate action movie. A good writer can write a very good action movie with an aging actor. All the writer have to do is write the appropriate style of action for an older actor. Take for example Denzel Washington The equalizer franchise. Mister Washington is i think 70 years old. So the director and writer of that franchise. They write the action scenes to cater Mister Washington as an older action star . Older fighters don't engage in wild action scene. They are very precise and short. The writers and producers of taken did not understand how to write action scene for older men. Also having the right editor is a must for any type of movie.

I don't get what the mass appeal is with the first Taken film (which is the only one really worth watching). It's a good movie but certainly nothing to write home about, and that iconic phone call scene always bothered me.

Taken 3 is one of very few movies that genuinely hurts my eyes to watch. The constant cuts, weird zooming effects and yellowed out colour profile is really disorienting and puts the final nail in the coffin. What could have been a mindless thriller that you can still watch over dinner or something just turns into an actively painful experience.

Ahhh but the Taken franchise didn't stop there. It had a 2017 TV show that got 2 season with 26 episodes.

Taken hasn't really had a downfall. Sure the movies themselves wimpered out after TAK3N But The whole "Angry divorced boomer dad fighting bad guys on VoD" has been booming ever since. I consider this the true franchise of Taken.

When people saw the first Taken movie everybody liked it... Then the sequels came out and sucked so bad that a lot of people realized the first one wasn't very good either.

I think one of the problem was that Taken was just a one movie story..You really couldn't make franchise out of it without repeating itself.

I think the first Taken has a few similar beats to the first Die Hard. An actor not known for being an action movie star, a character caught in an impossible situation.

I agree that it got stale but Taken didn't have enough story to sustain a franchise. John Wick has a underground society of assassin's also know as story potential

I was in agreement with everything until the John Wick comparison. I can't see how John Wick 3 was any better than Taken 3. John Wick 3 was one of the most boring slogs of a movie I can recall watching as of late. Just non-stop fighting sequences with almost no plot to speak of. I think that John Wick 4 needs to reinvent the franchise just as much as Taken 4 would've needed to had there been more.

8:54 They tried to prime for the possibility for more sequels by making a TV show in 2017, but it was cancelled after two seasons due to (unsurprisingly) low ratings, so no, I doubt there's gas in the tank for another movie.

2:12 off topic, but at least Van Damme has some proper skill, leaping into a flying kick, while Seagal only stretches his arm while an action double does the rest of the job, man that guy sure is silly 😅 3:22 dude had to turn on the subtitles, don't know if he speak like that so you don't hear that cheesy line or if he just looses his breath by just standing still 😂
