Drake is an artist who has been one of the most influential individuals on my music taste of any other musician. I will always hold a significant place in my heart for my first listens of So Far Gone, Take Care, Scorpion... but the last few years have hurt me greatly.
This is not a video about why "all of Drake's new music sucks!" and how he's just the worst person ever; it's a commentary and examination of how Drake has changed the culture surrounding popular music and what I believe we can do as fans to move this influence back in a positive direction.
Do I think we can create a large enough voice to actually turn the tides? I don't know, but I'd rather fail at something important than be complacent...
What do you think of this record? Let's talk about it in the comments!
Thanks so much for watching. Every subscriber/viewer means a lot to me, and I appreciate every like and comment. Let me know what you think about the video or the album and I'd love to have a discussion in the comments! Music is meant to be discussed to assimilate ideas and to grow as people.
Subscribe! / mybeautifullongwindeda...
I am a Christian and student and I made this channel when I was in high school. I started this channel because I love talking about music (specifically hip hop) and given that the genre seems to be going downhill, I want to be part of the community that preserves the expectation of great music and dissecting what makes a beautiful record. Dealing with a lack of friends to discuss these matters with, I hoped to start my own community that loves music just as I do, as well as to provide a unique perspective as a follower of Christ that also appreciates this community. I appreciate everyone who watches and I am truly happy to see anybody comment their thoughts on a project I talk about.
Put "HOW MUCH TIME IS THIS GUY SPENDING ON THE INTRO?" as your comment if you read the description!
As always, thank you very much for watching and taking time out of your day to discuss music with me, God bless. Isaiah 55:8-12

drake also wasn't the first to breach what many rappers before him talked about in their songs in terms of moving away from money guns and bitches and he certainly wasn't the first to highlight and include women in rap in a less raunchy way, people like Lauren hill and kanye pioneered that movement. although drake made it popular to do so, he wasn't the first mainstream example of this being done.

Drake's antics are getting more and more distasteful. Which caused people like Kendrick Lamar to reach to the darkest part of their soul to get rid of the 'problem' he is contributing to. Kendrick may not be 'the' Saviour but he wants to at least help getting rid of this 'problem'.

As I listen to this flawed perspective, I have to remind myself that it makes sense that it makes sense that an outsider would deem another outsider as a "savior" of our culture. Aubrey was a movement, the movement of hip-hop further into the hands of the mainstream and majority culture. This is why when Aubrey is criticized, the only thing that he and his fans can fall on are his sales and streams i.e. how much outsiders like him....which is not only the antithesis to the actual culture, but also extremely detrimental to it. But go off...😒

Replace Drakes name with Eminem and you have the same opinion from the early 2000s from the same people. People pretend that his religious background had nothing to do with his rise in the industry. One has to think why Jay Z had been in hip-hop since 1989 and it took 30 years for him to get to what Drake was given in 10 years, $400 million deal.

@@themostsecretscience6409you absolutely don’t. Being white and being an outsider aren’t the same thing. Eminem was battle tested and lived the real culture and studied rap for years. He paid his proper dues and earned his respect. Drake didn’t do any of that.

@ayanagreen5349 it's not about Eminems background. It was about media crowning him as the "savior" of hip-hop. Eminem was being pushed as the guy that's better than those black guys by. MTV, VH1, Rolling Stone and every other white media controlled establishment in music. Eminem being a genuine student of hip-hop and knowing the culture never fell for it. Drake did. He wants to be the so called savior of American black music by robbing it blind and putting half black face on it. Like Elvis.

Influence, yes. Revolutionize, no. Drake did the same thing, Dane Cook did with comedy. He understood internet culture and what it could do, he became a living meme and rode the wave. But the grind that makes you talented enough for that big stage was a step he got to skip. So he got popular before he was talented enough to prove critics wrong. He was able to patch that talent with other artist’s talents but burned others doing that. He could either grow or regress and he chose the easiest route.

I think what people do is make assumptions. We assume artists want to be artsy. We assume artistry is always mysterious and rooted in sadness. I believe art is a persons views on life , beauty and society. It’s subjective and means different things to different people. We are assuming drake wants to make music to impress rap nerds, bloggers and podcasters . When in reality he wants to beat the Beatles. I think his goal as an artist is to have the most hits ever (which he already does) when it comes to the billboard hot 100. He has 14 and needs 7 #1s to top the list all time. I believe that’s where his motivations lie. To look at it any other way is crazy until he comes out and says “these are my motivations” which no artist does lol.

I gave up on Drake after CLB when his intentions and directions were clear. I felt like "yoh it's been five years, five albums and it feels like an endless loop soo it's likely that this sh*tshow will carry on till the ceiling blows out". I didn't want an "old drake" or a "take care drake", all I want or expect from artists is self-expression, music derived from an artist's feelings, vision, thoughts, experiences or memories which translates into inspiration, not formulaic, mimicking and aimed at demographics music, I've been listening music for a minute so I got standards. So instead of keep shiting on him, I just ignore him, which is quite inevitable because in one way or another he'll pop in my ears through one of the artists that I'm interested, and somehow he never fails to disappoint (J Hus - Who told you).

I stopped listening to hip hop around 2008. I just got to know who Drake is because of the beef. I cant deny his influence on the music, cause everything kinda sounds like him, but I absolutely hate this aesthetic, especially his pedantic haircut. I wouldn't say he "saved" hip hop, I think he reanimated already dead corpse. I wouldn't even say he is a rapper, he seems more like pop culture phenomenon. Still, good video, like for effort

I’m not upset or bitter when I heard him say Drake with the artist that basically got him into rap culture told me exactly how he looked at the journey and evolution of rap, rap culture, and rap artists. Before Drake there was LL Cool J who made a rap love ballet called a I need love. Before Drake could even pull off much of what he did in the beginning one would have to acknowledge the change Kanye West brought to the industry. Kanye literally had men wear soft color polos and embracing the nerd/smart guy vibe. Drake has done a lot for the game but he has mainly been the final product set forth from the unique individuals before him like LL Cool J, Outlast, Kanye West, and Weezy F Baby

Drake shifting the culture is crazy talk to me. He, draining it if anything. Also, Hip hop get slow due drake rise? Are you insane? It was only dry to people who wasn't listening the hip hop from the underground nor the South. The late 2000's early to late 2010's. was amazing for rap. Most of favorite songs are from that era. I was a drake during that time. I was the biggest Wayne most of all. Drake would have been greater if he stuck to his roots. He left his core fans behind back in 2013. Drake didn't change the culture for the better at all. He was thrown in our faces at every turn. Honestly I haven't listen to a drake album since more life and I only liked 3 songs off of it. By that time I was already huge big Sean and Kendrick fan, because to me they had greater music and messages. Drake, was really left behind. But only his core fan from when he first started saw the writing on the wall after Nothing was the Same

Im looking forward to the rest of the video, but idk if ill take anything in the video seriously given you basically just said that "drake saved hiphop" 😂😂😂 after trashing on wayne and kanye. What has drake brought to the table that kanye and wayne were not already doing? Every single rapper that has popped over the past 10 years - be it tyler the creator, future, kendrick, juice wrld, xxxtentacion, j cole, lil uzi vert, playboi carti, travis scott (need i go on?) Has named either wayne or kanye as their biggest influence or one of. Not a single one of those names i mentioned have listed drake as an influence. This is not a diss on Drake's music - i am a big fan of the first half of his discog, and even his later stuff has some massive highs for me (amen and bahamas promises are both big highlights from the recent album for me), but i seriously question your understanding of the history of hip hop. These claims you have made make you come across as a fan of drake, not a fan of hh, bc they are just blantantly untrue, all for the purpose of making drake appear more impactful than he has been. He may be the biggest hh artist of the past decade, but he is not the most infuential artist of the past decade. Acting like HH was a dead genre he bled life into is unironically historical revisionism, it just isnt how it went down. Wayne and Kanye lit the fuse that made hh blow up into the biggest financially and most sonically diverse genre of the past decade, drake's gift was being one of the first artists to truly appreciate their vision and take it to the next level - proving how successful it could be. Ok my stupidly unimportant rant about fucking hh is over lmao - no hate btw just needed to get that off my chest, i was genuinely just kinda flabberghasted at these statements pretty early in the video. Anyhoo time to watch this video - if anyone happens to see this comment and disagrees and thinks the original video is right and/or im just misunderstanding the point id be curious as to what the counter arguement would be so defo letme know. Fuck i love hip hop 😂

New artists coming out with a few good projects early in their career and then running out of things to say and falling off is a tale as old as time. Only difference between Drake and those other artists is he didn’t let running out of things to say stop him. He figured out that if he jumped from wave to wave, emulating whatever the hot style was and making shallow, meaningless music that “sounds good”, he’d stay popular forever.

But if u r doing it for the love of music and the music is good and all ppl care about is whether or not it's successful or if it charts after a while, you start asking yourself, do I need to do what's true for me? Or do I need to do what makes me successful? Personally, I don't feel that way but there's too much conversation on the SUCCESS of the music rather than the QUALITY and the CREATIVITY. I think if the ppl want something meaningful, they need to shift the focus.

Good video. All I gotta say is the older fans gotta chill, you’ll always have the music from your period no one’s taking that away from you. I feel like people are genuinely mad that people actually like drakes recent output and are trying to force feed an opinion on us. We get it. We see videos like this about him every month and still enjoy the music. It’s easier to hate on him in this age than to like everything he puts out and people just like what they like. You’ll never get a dramatic character arc from him, he’s just who he is and makes the music he wanna make. If catering to all his fanbases every album is what he wants to do, he deserves to do it. People always fall for the publicity stunt music and easy cash grabs but ignore all of his other music. He still makes introspective shit about his life, it’s just the since he’s the biggest the “bad” is magnified like no other.

no way you can blame Drake for an entire change in the culture. He did what he was supposed to do with music 10 years ago. I feel like he earned the right to drop whatever he wants at this point

He definitely can release whatever he wants but when the quality lessens after we’ve been in the game for x amount of years then of course people are gonna say something. Like I understand he never cared what critics and people had to say but when you yourself don’t even care about the quality or longevity of your music then it leads to conversation about said music.

Coming from a previous Drake fan… this video started off with waaaaaaay too much emphasis on Drake’s importance to the culture. 😂😂 Drake was a “miracle”? 😂 Bro 🤣 If the FIRST hip hop artist you ever got into was Drake… then you missed out on way too much for you to confidently claim that 2009 was the “lowest point of hip hop”. It’s also a VERY bold (and embarrassing) claim to say “Drake SAVED the genre of hip hop”😬. First you should probably learn that the hip hop genre is more than just Rap so you can look at the whole picture of the music that was being created at that time. And 2nd you should probably mention that Drake wasn’t the 1st, 2nd or 3rd rapper to do melodic rap about talking about feelings, love, and loving women. He also had quite a few misogynistic lyrics in his music, even back then. As much fun as it was growing up in that era and watching his rise, I would never say Drake was “needed” by hip-hop or that it would’ve been a dead genre without him. Everyone’s entitled to their own opinions, but the fact that you said “sure, I guess we had Kanye and Wayne”… as if they were a non factor at that point is crazy.

I'll be respectful and tell you that it was a good video, however, drake isn't the best person out there. If you pay attention to anything he's ever done...you'd know it. That Naomi Sharon situation is pretty disgusting tale about how our society works. Who do you have to be to ruin a relationship just cause you wanted to? Lol please
