Thank you so much for this! Like many others here, I was completely overwhelmed. You cover basics other people glossed over, and you provide helpful pointers with the gotchas, something I always look for in a good tutorial. Really well thought out! The hands on sample is a great way to integrate the knowledge, and I really appreciate that too.

NP, glad you liked it and found it helpful, I have a whole series of these 😁 I made them because I had a tough time getting started myself. There were some OK tutorials, but like you said, there was a lot of stuff they didn't cover at all or glossed over too quickly. So, I figured I'd give back and cover all of that stuff and here we are!

Thanks enormously for this vid! I’m sure it’s very good!! Before I watch it, I type here the very first problems in the interface I stumbled upon as a comple te novice: No obvious place to set song bpm speed. No obvious place to chose an instrument when clicking on every track header. Clicking on the plus sign in the tab for adding samples shows wave files as un clickable. Was able to add a kick drum sample (from the instrument editor in Window menu) yet it was not the one that played for ANY channel, not matter how I changed the number in the instrument raw. No obvious access to the window with ASDR knobs for filters and amps. Etc etc.

Fun fact: The Brazilian version of the Sega Genesis runs PAL with a 60Hz clock. It also has a RF modulator for video output cause component video were way too fancy for us back in the day.

In the U.K. and Europe, different countries developed their OWN engineering beliefs of television technology signal standards... The U.K. developed their 50Hz PAL format iirc... however understand that France had something called SECAM which was different from PAL and these standards were exposed to Imperial Japan since the either the late 1920s or very early 1930s where Imperial Japan had decided on a U.K. like PAL standard while television tech was still not widely available or even anywhere near mass production until the late 1940s The Imperial Japanese PAL format was changed to NTSC-J after the U.S. military occupation... so imagine if the Japanese government decided to never use NTSC at all and instead used PAL at 50Hz... it would mean that the game systems launched in Japan would instead have to be prioritized to PAL regions using 50Hz and the respective resolutions. Brazil like other South American countries would get their tech information and hardware from their respective Europe counterparts... The British will argue how PAL 50Hz is actually superior to the NTSC but its not a simple topic and back then the ocean was not traveled by airplanes. It is ironic that Sega Enterprises Japan was unable to have a PAL region ready Sega MegaDrive and organized subsidiary branch in the U.K. and Europe where their most successful fanbase existed until 1990... two years after 1988... had they prioritized the U.K. and Europe (which isn't easy because different languages and PAL 50Hz) it would have given that region a huge two year advantage... same deal almost if the Sega of America subsidiary branch had not been such a mess during the 80s... the Sega MegaDrive could have launched in 1988.. people might have freaked out at the $200 dollar price and no game included and bad comparisons to NES but the power of the graphics would have been hard to ignore... including Altered Beast graphics.

Hi! Mobile Deflemask user here! Thank you soooo much for this tutorial on Deflemask! I kinda knew how to use Deflemask but this video taught me some tips that I didn’t know about or I missed out on. I always thought Deflemask was just a Sega genesis music app that allows you to make your own music, but this video taught me it’s more than just a music app. I hope I, as a newbie mobile Deflemask user will learn through this series to make my own Sega genesis music in the future!

It's worth it if you really want to get into using it seriously. There's lots of niceties in the paid version including support for a lot more systems now than even when I started this series early this year. It's the only program I use to make Genesis music. I use something else for SNES music, but that's a whole different story!

Personally instead of deflemask I would recommend using furnace, it's basically deflemask but fully free AND open source, basically the dev made it in response to deflemask going paid and because people wanted deflemask to be open source because the dev hadn't updated it in several years despite making a poll on the discord asking which system to add next in 2019, then in 2021 they said they were going to add neo geo but it would only be in the paid version and the free version wouldn't be getting any more updates and there were a lot of people who weren't so happy about this :P

@InglebardGaming
@InglebardGaming 2 жыл бұрын
The cat breaks are not about treating anyone like they're dumb. It's about getting everyone's mind out of the work for a second for a mental break. It's the kind of thing I learned to do while teaching some classes, if you just do nothing but the material from start to finish and ram it through, people start to glaze over and lose interest. Just doing something fun or relaxing for a few seconds can help a lot with both focus and retention. Quite a few big channels work things in to break up long or complex videos and are more subtle about it, but I wanted it to be obvious, that's all.

I don't really have any recommendations for theory tutorials. I never really learned any official theory myself. Everything I learned about composing I figured out myself, the hard, and probably wrong, way. I do everything on a standard computer keyboard these days. That includes any systems supported in Deflemask and anything else I do, like SNES, in OpenMPT.

Edit: Clicking File > New and clearing it out fixed the problem and now it behaves as shown in the video, but I'm still very confused about why it was acting weird in the first place. I'm trying to follow along but my software isn't behaving the same as what's in the video. QWERTYUI as an octave works, but only when I'm not recording. When I click record and press Q, it's silent and doesn't do anything. W also does nothing, E makes an E appear in 4th column of the pattern, but is silent and doesn't actually set a note. Everything I find on Google about keyboard shortcuts just completely omits which keys correspond to the piano keyboard. What am I doing wrong?

I'm guess the odd and even number row speeds are for swung time in music, right?
@InglebardGaming
@InglebardGaming 3 ай бұрын
I don't think it'd be considered swing if that's what you're referring to. It's really just another method to put finer controls on speed. If you have a fast speed in general, say 1, then have odd rows at 2 and even rows at 3, most people probably won't even notice the difference, but you've effectively slowed down the song as a whole by a significant degree that's in between full speeds 1 and 2. If I kept the odds and evens both set to three but changed the main speed from 1 to 2, it would get WAY slower, so having finer adjustments that only affect odd or even rows is really helpful.

You have to make sure Deflemask is in "record" mode. You do that by either hitting the record button or the space bar. Once it's in record mode, you just click a row and column in the tracker and press a key. The bottom two rows are one octave lower than selected, the upper two rows are in the octave selected.

It wouldn't surprise me if there's a tool for that, but I've never seen one myself and never looked for one before. So, question: You specifically forbid us from Extended CH3 mode. Some of the pre-made instruments say -CH3- next to them. What's up with that? Are those to be avoided?
@InglebardGaming
@InglebardGaming 2 жыл бұрын
Ha, well, it's not "forbidden" just complicated if you dont know what it is exactly or how it works. The ext ch3 instruments are built for that mode. You can use them in regular songs too, but they were optimized to get the most of ext ch3 mode. If you like how it sounds in regular Genesis mode, then knock yourself out!

Question! What are the general rows we should have for the different time signatures specifically? I’m really curious about this because I think in sheet music and not rows. It’s very confusing to me.
@InglebardGaming
@InglebardGaming 2 жыл бұрын
Well, it depends on a few things, but generally you just want your total number of rows to be proportional to the numerator and denominator. So for example... Let's say your fastest note is a 32nd note. Then for 4/4 timing, you could set it to 32 rows. This way every 8 rows would be a quarter note. 16 would be a half, 32 a whole, etc. If you need 64th notes, you'd want to double that to 64 rows and a quarter note would be 16 rows and so on. Similarly, 3/4 and 32nd notes... You could do 24 rows per pattern. Quarter notes would be 8 rows, half 16, whole 24, etc. If you need 64th notes just double everything. Basically, you can just keep proceeding like that fir any timing. 40 rows for 5/4 and so on. And these are suggestions, you don't have to use these specific numbers, but they're easy to keep track of, especially if you're transcribing sheet music. You can fine tune the tempo with the overall and row speeds. Hopefully, that's what you were looking for!

@@InglebardGaming I was trying to make a classical sounding song I've had in my head since 2013. I'm used to using Nanoloop on iOS, so I thought I could just keep going, but it wouldn't let go past one minute and fifty-four seconds. I then figured out I can use the channel boxes in the top left corner to split them up; which is allowing me to continue. Now my issue is that the rows are set to sixty but it blanket covers each section, making large spaces in between the notes. I don't have the vocabulary yet to be more specific, I'm sorry about that. And thank you for the quick reply. I tried looking everywhere for the answer, I just have a habit of having unique problems.
@InglebardGaming
@InglebardGaming 2 жыл бұрын
What you can do timing wise, especially if you're familiar with general music timing / notation is this... If you have 4/4 timing, meaning 4 beats per each measure, which is the mist common timing. You can set rows to 32 with that and then add patterns in the upper left. With 32 rows, if you place 1 note every 32 rows that's a whole note. Every 16 is a half. Every 8 rows is a quarter note, every 4 an eighth note, every 2 a 16th and every row a 32nd note. With 64 rows all that is doubled and every row is 64th note. Follow all that?
@callmefresno
@callmefresno 2 жыл бұрын
@@InglebardGaming I understand a little. Whenever I see numbers I have a difficult time though. To get the tempo I wanted I had to set the bpm to 12. It originally was way too fast. Also, if I set the rows to 32 it will cut off some notes. With how daunting the options and control it gives you I'm surprised I got as far as I did with Nanoloop. I may need to either trim the fat or come back to it with more experience. I'll mess around with it a bit, and keep watching your videos. I do recognize I am jumping the gun a little bit. Thank you again for the help.
@InglebardGaming
@InglebardGaming 2 жыл бұрын
Okie doke. One more piece of advice I can give, especially when you're just starting out, is consider each row the fastest possible note you need. Let's say you have 4/4 timing. If you're only using whole notes, well then for each measure you only need one row. If you'll have half notes, then you'd need 2. Quarter notes would need 4. Eighth notes would need 8 and so on. So the key there is just recognizing the absolute fastest note you need and using enough rows in each pattern to accomodate that. For me, when I'm working in 4/4, which is most of the time, I generally don't go faster than 32nd notes, but I tend to use 64 rows so I have extra room in case I need something faster, especially to make effects a little finer.

I use Renoise, but so far I've been able to sit in front of anything and in half an hour I've been able to put together something listenable (fl, ableton, mixcraft). We can agree that this program is a half finished undesigned piece of shit. On startup, the midi keyboard has drums that can't be typed from the instrument and the instruments are only allowed from the keyboard. I load a drum and then the drums I type will be played with a beep. You can't mouse over the selected area move in the track. There is a ton of empty space but copy-paste, note up-down, octave up-down, etc is on shortcuts. Why? Sid format is not loadable. Waste of money because it's not worth a cent. For the quad sid something normal daw next to it like this shit.
@InglebardGaming
@InglebardGaming 2 жыл бұрын
If it's not for you, that's fine. I've been using the legacy (free version) for almost 18 months now and the paid version for about a month and they do what I need them to do. Personally I have no desire to use a musical keyboard with a tracker, so I just use the standard typing keyboard. If I was doing 'normal' sound production or midi, then I'd use a music keyboard but for this old school chiptune music, I find it more useful to manually work on the grid and tweak everything just the way I want it on a per note basis. I normally use samples for percussion and just set them up how I want them so for me, there's no drum pads to mess with, I'm setting up the percussion I need on a per song basis. On the C64 side, no sid files aren't loadable. On the FM or PSG side, neither are VGM files. They're not in the tracker format. And on the money side, come on, it's free for legacy which is fully functional and $10 for the paid version that can export to formats that are importable on a number of different systems. Like I said, if you don't like it, you're entitled. But I don't see how anyone can call it a waste of money... especially the free version!

@@InglebardGaming Writing music isn’t about wrestling with the bullshit of the program because the maker was a moron. (such as goat tracker) It just kills creativity and multiplies the work. That's why there is a focus test. And that’s why you need a software designer next to a programer. I bought it because I found the legacy unusable. But only got the same with a colored ui. I think this program is just good for fart sawing. And the amount to pay is far from $10.
