Back in its heyday, the PSP was revolutionary. But no second analog stick and no way to convert your physical games to digital held it back from aging gracefully. If it did both of those things, plus maybe with PSN trophy and friends list integration, it’d be one of the best handhelds of all time. Despite those things, I still love my 3000. Being able to play games like Star Wars Battlefront, Wipeout, MGS, Assassin’s Creed, Medal of Honor and LEGO games on the go is still cool to me today. Plus the console looks sleek.

A small correction: the 3000 has superior color range and loses blur at the cost of half the pixels at high speed. (Very visible in 2D.) The Go had the best screen, by far. But, the sacrifices in comfort were considerable. And only 16GB for a download focused system? Were they insane? I still miss mine, but still...

My first exposure to Dead or Alive was an arcade cabinet (USA). Besides the obvious bounciness, the thing that really caught my eye was Kasumi's katana kata. That looked really cool, so I was disappointed that the game was strictly hand-to-hand. That was a really weird choice to include in the attract mode to me. It was an attract mode that made you want to play Soul Edge, not Dead or Alive.

The Playstation version is so different in look ... much less textures but with smooth shading (unlike the flat shading of the arcade and Saturn versions). The biggest texture difference is the lack of animated facial expressions. As a result, the Playstation version doesn't zoom in as close as these during victory animations. Keeping it zoomed out made the lack of animated facial expressions less obvious/distracting.

With the weirder shading in the PS1 version, the characters almost look like they're made of clay. It looks good overall, but it's one of those games where something always just felt off about the look to me.

I've been using RecalBox on my Pi5 and it worked perfectly fine from first boot to now. I really think a lot of the issues you faced are likely due to Lakka still being very fresh on the system. To be honest I'm surprised you didn't mention RecalBox once. It's very easy and just works.

I've worked with several OSes on it and while some are definitely more stable than others, performance isn't too terribly different amount the ones I tested at least. I may do a follow up with a few devices where I check another gaming OS on a few of them so I might cover RecalBox at that point just to show something different.

I forgot the PSP Street existed, great vid! The lack of regionlock was appreciated and beloved (RIP LIK-SANG), and then came the Vita. Maining a US PSN account you'd get a sweet nice library of software especially on the Vita TV which apparently required manual certification flagging for software. Primary one is a EU PSN account? You got to use English langauge software, that was it. I bought a bunch of US PSN cards over Amazon to get the most outta that.

Yeah, it sucks workarounds were needed, but at least they were there. I got a PS TV when it was new and a Vita a bit later. Great little system overall, but I can't use the Vita without a grip (kills my hands) and those tiny buttons aren't the best. The PS TV was a great idea but I guess Sony didn't want to compete against their own major home consoles. It's awesome when you hack it, at least!

NP, thanks for watching! I've only slightly dabbled with GameBoy in Deflemask and made a couple of test songs. You should be able to look in the online manual for a list of supported effects for each device. If you have the paid version, you can see the supported effects for any device in the menu. You can loop one full pattern over and over, but I don't know if there's a way to loop a group of patterns. For one pattern, in the paid version at least there's a button for it right next to play. I haven't used free in a while so I don't remember if it was in that or not.

When this was announced the buzz around it was huge. I distinctly remember looking forward to it thinking, 'it's gonna have near, Playstation graphics (PS1) on a handheld, amazing!' when they started to show the games in magazines screenshots and with more info coming out, then realising it's not far off a Playstation 2, yes 2! I couldn't believe it. Seeing it running for the first time with it's 16:9 screen amazed gamers. The multimedia capabilities of the machine were also ahead of its time. EDIT: Reminiscing about some of the great, pretty much full console games like Outrun 2 (2006 coast to coast if i remember correctly) playing and looking very close to its console counterparts, and how huge the Monster Hunter games were on the system, which blew up almost like Pokemon at the time especially in Japan. Also a bit later in it's life the homebrew scene was huge with ports like Doom and a great version of Quake along with tons of others and great 'apps' on the different custom firmwares along with loads of emulators bring back memories of some of my favourite gaming moments.

Yeah, when Sony first announced it, everyone expected roughly PS1 quality and it was significantly above that, which was great. It was a couple of notches below PS2 overall, but still crazy powerful for a handheld of that era. The homebrew and hacking scene on the PSP was great, of course, too!

For 2004 tech, and its wide screen (16:9) and using the Dpad and buttons basically the same size as the PS2/PS3 DualShock (specially from the 2000/3000 models) while Vita's are tiny, being able to play virtually all PS1 library, being able to play current PC/Console games that were multiplatform, such as Tomb Raider Legends/Anniversary, GTA VCS, many exclusives such as Parasite Eve 3. multiplayer games where each player had their own independent screens LOCALLY, which was a much better experience in games like obscured, where the console version shared the same screen. Emulation was BIG on the handheld and the community is great to this day. It was before the 2010's handheld craze that ended up plaguing the online stores, and also had an impact on the Vita, Wii U and the 3DS, the latter only selling well due to Pokémon and a few other Nintendo exclusives that want it or not, still makes Nintendo sell a lot of hardware. I still remember how amazed I was that a handheld had full blown PC/console titles to play portably, it was a first for the handheld market and won't happen again. I mean, the PSP would still be amazing if it only played PS1 games on the go, but it's just a small portion of what it does. It was launched years before the first iPhone and you could watch videos, listen to music and these were really nice features that we now take for granted. The 3000 models even had Skype and we used it!

@@roberto1519 It was super ambitious for 2004 (really 2005) handheld device. Sony had so many right ideas, they just didn't anticipate how big the internet and streaming would become. Once they realized it, it was much too late. The PSP was a complete wrong-direction misstep and they should have saved digital only (with the cart port) for the Vita, that would have worked out better for them. Overall it was a great system and managed to last about 11 years at retail. But, honestly, it became irrelevant faster here than in Japan and some other regions. Still great for its time!

@@InglebardGaming Yes, even the right analog that was an obvious design choice, they screwed it up. It's screen was big for the time and its best looking games were so impressive that those unfamiliar with the system couldn't believe we had portable PS2s at hand. I remember handing the PSP to a guy right after he was talking about arcades and the PSP was running Cadillacs & Dinosaurs (via CPS1PSP) and it blew him away. I'd say that Sony feared iPhone for the wrong reasons, just like SEGA feared the 3DO and the Jaguar, once the iPhone took of (basically from day one), the PSN Store started flooding with mini games that were never the intent of the portable, and this is not only true for mini games as there are countless retail releases inspired by those strange concepts, it ended up with tons of shovelware. Truth be told, I think the iPhone/iPad dominance during the early 10's took the best of the Wii U/Vita, and if these Apple devices had Pokémon available, it would be the same for the 3DS. The market changed in the late 10's, as we can see the likes of the Switch/Steam Deck going strong. Casuals would never care about consoles/portable gaming focused devices, and vice-versa, but it wasn't the case with the early years of the iPhone era.

Kinda disappointed that you didn't mention the hardware NURBS support or acceleration for PNG decoding. Also that the system was severely hindered by not having a second analog stick and having bumpers but not triggers, so it was missing controller parts that prevented a bunch of genres that had already been successful on the PS1/PS2/XBOX/GC from being appropriately playable. It led to some Metal Gear Solid games that couldn't play like the home console ones, even though the hardware was more than up to the task otherwise. I wanted more out of the system, but there were so many amazing titles on the system regardless. The PS1 was a system that a bunch of creative and unique games came to, and the PSP took that mantle since the PS2s development costs were too high to support non-mainstream games. Made it a really nice platform, just not a good place for direct PS1/2 ports in many cases.

I thought about doing one on splines and one on it being the first (sort of) 16:9 system, if I'd done two more they would have been it. Regarding the lack of controls, I thought that one was a bit too common knowledge. All your points are 100% right, the lack of a second stick and extra triggers hampered a fair amount of games. I just felt that's been done extensively by a lot of other videos. The PSP definitely wasn't perfect, but it did a lot of things right and had a pretty solid library overall. Ironic that the Vita fixed a lot of this and performed so much worse (about 15 million sold).

Yep, these are/were our biggest gripes with the handheld. How on earth could Sony NOT add a second analog stick for a 2005 gaming device is beyond comprehension, they remedied that with the Vita, but then they just made the dpad and the face buttons tiny for baby hands... The PSP would be SO much better with at least the right analog thingy, while I could live with the bumpers as they are, at that point in time, games required analog triggers and two analog sticks, go figure.

@anderskirchenbauer3723 There's no question the super expensive proprietary memory cards hurt the Vita, they were beyond dumb. Mine never got corrupted, but I hacked mine and got a Vita2SD so I could use regular micro sd cards. But those cards more than anything else probably sealed the Vita's fate. I'm not a huge XMB fan, it was OK, but it's not all that efficient for navigating menus. The Vita interface could definitely stand a few tweaks itself. By the way, you got the boss rush names mixed for the big dragon, and the 4 armed ship, the 4 armed ship is Tetran (which means 4, think Tetris, where every piece were 4 blocks), and Intruder would be the dragon beast. I see someone else also mentioned this, and you mentioned about the manuals, but those can be very misleading. You'll be able to run a few more PC games slightly better and emulation performance is similar. @InglebardGaming
@InglebardGaming 6 күн бұрын
The video is about comparing Sega games on the PC Engine and Genesis, not the SMS. Shadow Dancer on the Genesis (and the arcade version, even though its a different game) uses the exact same play style as arcade Shinobi which was ported to the PCE, so how is this a giant leap? The only difference when it comes to play mechanics is the dog. Otherwise... you throw shuriken, you jump between multiple heights, have close quarter attacks, get a power up when picking up the required collectibles in the level, even the enemies in SD are basically just reskinned Shinobi enemies. The bigger problem were all the cuts to PCE Shinobi that removed stuff present in the original arcade version... all of mission 2, all the close quarters attacks, the power ups and the bonus rounds. PCE Shinobi looks good on first glance but it was chopped to ribbons and the gameplay was heavily affected. It's no different that comparing stuff like Space Harrier I and II, Thunderblade and Super Thunderblade, etc. I said in the video multiple times that I compared the closest equivalents when the same title was not available on both systems and that's exactly what's in the video.

don't know too much about GG and 8-bit Sega but ... Alien Syndrome - The version on the game gear is unique Arena: Maze of Death - Really fun game gear exclusive. It's an isometric shooter where you explore various factories looking for keys and weapon upgrades Ax Battler: A Legend of Golden Axe - A Golden Axe themed RPG. It's kind of simple, and frustrating in my opinion. I'm not a fan, but many consider it a "hidden gem" Baku Baku - A fun puzzle game. There is an SMS version, but the GG version is superior in my opinion because it offers 2 player mode Batman Returns - I think it's better than the SMS version. You have a power meter and the levels and play style is a bit different Crystal Warriors - Awesome strategy RPG. I find it very fun. Defenders of Oasis - Exclusive RPG with a very unique vibe. It's told in chapters and it's quite fun. One of my favorites on GG Demon Child Zenki - Japanese exclusive action game with an overworld and lots of things to explore and discover. Very fun. There is an English fan translation, but I'm not sure how you'd play it without a flash cart Devilish - Pinball style adventure game (very odd concept!) that is different than the Genesis version. It's a bit frustrating, but fun to check out Donald no Magical World - Very fun McDonalds theme action platformer. It's a Japanese exclusive, but it plays in full English. Doraemon - Noranosuke no Yabou - Japanese Exclusive. It's a very fun and simple little platformer. English friendly! Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine - Puyo Puyo, but with Sonic villans. I like this version better than the SMS port and it plays different than the Genesis version. It's actually much harder than the 16 bit version Factory Panic - Fun puzzle game that is exclusive to the game gear. Flip switches to deliver to goods to people in what appears to communist Russia! Fantasy Zone - Unique version of Fantasy Zone Galaga '91 - Update to Galaga with new levels and bosses. Didn't come out on any other sega consoles GG Aleste - Amazing GG Exclusive shooter! Must Play!! Japanese exclusives but its English friendly GG Aleste 2 / Power Strike II - Amazing GG Exclusive shooter! Must Play!! In the US it's called Power Strike II GG Aleste 3 - This was created in 2020 by the same team that did the first 2. Amazingly fun game. Not sure how you can play it without a flash cart though Gunstar Heroes - Very fun platformer. Its slightly different than the Genesis version. Different enough to warrant a play though Halley Wars - Exclusive shooter. Its simple but fun. You are encouraged to kill everything because if enough enemies slip past you, you could lose Lunar - Sanposurur Gakuen - Simple RPG, but it has great charecters and fun story. Broken up into chapters. You need to either know Japanese or use a fan translation patch, so probably requires a flash cart Magical Puzzle Popils - Awesome exclusive puzzle game. You have to break blocks to get a path to your trapped girlfriend. Very challenging and lots of levels Magical Taruruuto-kun - Very simple but fun shooter. Japanese exclusive, but it's English friendly Mega Man - Pretty fun, exclusive version of Mega Man on the GG. Plays really well Megami Tensei Gaiden - Last Bible - Japanese exclusive RPG, requires a fan translation patch Might Morphin Power Rangers - GG exclusive fighting game. One of my all time favorites! Plays very well, with a good 1P story mode. The vs. option is also super fun and opens up a ton of new charecters. This game plays so well, and is highly recommended!!! Might Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie - Great sequel, even better than the other power rangers game! Ninja Gaiden - Exclusive ninja gaiden game on the GG. Very fun OutRun - I prefer this version to the SMS version, I think it looks and plays better. Pop Breaker - shooter/puzzle game. Japanese exclusive but it's English friendly Psychic World - Very cool action platformer with a good story. This version is different that the SMS port. It's easier to change weapons and some of the levels are re-designed / combined Ristar - The best GG platformer? Maybe! Different than the Genesis version. It has a ton of stars to collect in each level. If you can play it on a Japanese GG you get an extra level! Royal Stone - Sequel to Crystal Warriors. It plays the same, but is highly refined and in my opinion, one of the best GG games. Japanese exclusive that requires a fan translation patch Sassou Shounen Eiyuuden Coca Cola Kid - Very fun platformer, with a Coca Cola tie in. It's Japanese, but english friendly (there's cut scenes, but you don't need to read them to play). There is also a fan translation patch available Shining Force - The Sword of Hajya - Haven't played it, but including it because many people claim it to be one of the best GG games and its exclusive. Shining Force - Gaiden Final Conflict - Haven't played it, but including it because many people claim it to be one of the best GG games and its exclusive. This one requires a fan translation patch Shinobi - Exclusive version for the GG. Very fun platformer where you pick your stage order (like Mega Man) and earn different ninjas with different abilities. One of my favorites!! Shinobi II - The Silent Fury. Everything that's good about Shinobi GG, but better. Everything is improved here. A must play! Sonic Blast - Kind of awful, but has to be seen. The graphics are a mess (they were going for a 3D effect and failed) and it's hard to believe this isn't a bootleg! It was ported to SMS, but the SMS version is terrible, with worse graphics and massive slow down. If you are going to play this, the GG is the platform to try it on. Sonic Drift - Exclusive kart racing game. I don't find it that fun, but many people love it. Sonic Drift 2 - The sequel. Better in every way, but still not my cup of tea Sonic Labyrinth - GG Exclusive Sonic spin off. Isometric platformer where you have to find keys. Might be worth a play, but I find it a bit boring Sonic Triple Trouble - Awesome Sonic platformer. Exclusive to GG Streets of Rage 2 - Very fun port, and it's a bit different from both the SMS and genesis versions. Worth playing through on GG Super Columns - Exclusive version of columns with extra play modes Sylvan Tale - Amazing adventure game (think Zelda). Unfortunately, its a Japanese exclusive so it requires a fan translation patch. Play this if you can! Tails Adventure - Adventure / Platforming game staring Tails! There's an overworld map, and you can select your stage and explore different levels finding new tools and items to help you progress Tails Sky Patrol - Japanese exclusive shooter staring Tails. English Friendly. It's very odd to control, but once you get the hang of it, it's kind of fun. A lot of people hate it, though Tempo Jr. - Very simple platformer with great graphics. This is an exclusive version. Woody Pop - Very fun break out style game where you go from screen to screen breaking blocks and fighting enemies. The SMS version is a little different and requires the paddle controller (can't be played with normal controller!) so this is the most convenient version to play. Still has it's uses but, no longer a viable emulation device. I moved to a GMKtec G5 N97 Tiny NUC. it's proving to be everything i wished the Pi 5 was.

Yeah, for general purpose devices and emulation, I think the Pi has outlived any usefulness it used to have. Unless they get a powerful low cost version out, I think its future will be with industrial applications and educational stuff only.

Ah, to be a fly on the wall between Hudson Soft and the team developing the game! My understanding is that at least some of the game was outsourced to a team in China, which looking at the credits, there's definitely some non-japanese names in there. So very likely the programmers at least were first timers for coding on the PC Engine. Recently, one programmer that's worked on the hardware over the years noted that they should have been easily able to update the dynamic tiles in the background at a constant rate rather than as slow and jerky as it's going. In fact, he noted that the giant "elevator level" with the vertical scrolling rocks uses the exact same technique and looks far smoother. Same goes for Ys 3, & at least one section in Ys 2. A static faux parallax background had already been done previously in games on PCE, so theoretically it's something that it should have been easy to do. Perhaps if Hudson Soft outsourced it to Now Productions who handled Jackie Chan and New Adventure Island among others, it would have turned out far better. They had years of experience on the PCE doing games for both Namco and Hudson & pulling off various parallax techniques. And the music, why? I eoughly enjoy both soundtracks more or less but why it changed, is beyond me. Was there some kind of special rights to whomever did the music in the NES version? Maybe that would have increased the licensing cost? Never thought about it before but I think going CD with this game would have been the correct route. Really go all out, but once again, get someone more experienced with the hardware! I would have preferred they transfer over the arcade Ninja Gaiden as that style of game is desperately needed on the PCE and I enjoy it a lot more than the NES game. Pce really has nothing that compares to Final Fight or Streets of Rage. That's not to say there aren't fun brawlers on it, but nothing that matches up to those games. My old team that I worked with had a couple in the works but real life got in the way and we broke up. Though it does sound like there's at least one homebrew brawler that is eventually going to be in the works, so I'm hoping it's going to be better than the average brawler on the pce. Oh and if I'm remembering right, Ninja Gaiden is on the PC Engine mini for some reason. That's another head scratcher!

Yeah, it's kinda surprising how few scrolling beat 'em ups there are on the system. I definitely wouldn't mind seeing a good homebrew one to see what could have been done on the hardware. I suspect the sprite limit would have made things pretty tough for a game in the genre.
@ParanoiaDragon
@ParanoiaDragon 5 күн бұрын
@@InglebardGaming Indeed. I can only guess that if the TG had done better stateside, there are at least would have been a few more beat em ups. For instance, perhaps Konami would have made a TMNT game which from what I've heard, that series had more success in the west than they did in the east. I would guess that it would have been the first arcade game if not something similar to Hyperstone Heist. The one brawler I am aware of, I don't know anything about it other than it's in the plans down the road and it's by the guy who did FX Unit Yuki. Yeah the sprite limit would definitely be a problem and they would have to keep a certain amount of enemies off screen. I think Riot Zone perhaps uses three enemies on screen max? But that's only with one player, since there is no two player mode in that game. I know you can move enemies off screen which I think is part of the trick with sprite limitations in these types of games, but I don't recall if there's some sort of downside to that. Bitmap Bureau seems to be doing multiple console versions of Final Vendetta, and they recently told me that doing Xeno Crisis on the PCE is high on their list. So it does make me wonder if they might perhaps try making a version of Final Vendetta on the PCE besides Xeno Crisis.

I’ve been using the bob deinterlacer shader in Retroarch for 480i games in Beetle Saturn and it works okay. The deinterlacer that PCSX2 uses for 480i PS2 games looks better IMO, so I wonder if Retroarch also has a better option.

Interestingly Saturn -version is more polygon based than PSX -version. PlayStation used prerendered backgrounds on this game. But thanks to that, it runs on hi-resolution at 60fps. However, Saturn is much closer to Arcade than admitedly incredible PSX -version.
@sloppynyuszi

How so? The Saturn and PS1 the characters are polygonal based with a flat floor and flat background. Technically not very different. The PS1 game looks very different, and was also rereleased as an arcade version. The Saturn does a good job capturing the model 2 version which is impressive, and the PS1 didn’t even bother. But it is its own thing. Subjectively I like the Saturn better, but objectively they’re technically not doing much different.

@@sloppynyuszi Saturn -version looks more like 3D -fighter, just like Model 2 -version. PSX -version looks and plays more like 2D -fighter. 360° Prerendering looks, well, exactly what it is. However, thanks to character animation, resolution, framerate and use of strong colours, the PlayStation -version actually looks a lot better than Tekken 3. -As long as not thinking too technically whats on screen. Instead just how it pleases an eyes.

It actually isn't. It just looks slightly less smooth on R-Type because the game runs at 55hz but is being played at a 60 hz refresh rate for capture purposes.

I was waiting for a 40XXH to come out, since i wanted a budget device with 4" screen (so the 405m didn't cut it for me) but i wanted a stick, so the arc was not exactly what i wanted as well. well the 40XXh came out it was basically what I asked for, except they kept the stupid sticks that work as 8 directional digital stick. so in the end i decided to buy the ARC instead, better chip, better ergonomics... i'm not a fan of sega (i mean over nintendo) but having the 6 buttons makes playing sega and a lot of arcade games better. so yeah. i bought the ARC-S. i don't need android on this nor any touchscreen capabilities (that would be needed for android or DS, i don't care about DS). and i will put ROCKNIX on it, or Retro Arena. payed a total of $65 including shipping. if the device turns out like all reviewers show it to be, it's a steal for that price... especially considering my first device was the RG-350 and costed me about $90 if not more (i don't remember anymore) and it was a good device at the time, but a terrible one when you compare it to the current market.
