One of those logistical things that you just don't think about much, but there has to be a way to swap it out with the spare grass so it can recover. It would be interesting to compare the ways that this is done in different stadiums and the other ways stadiums make their central space more flexible.
@adi45713
@adi45713 9 ай бұрын
They remove the whole pitch as in like a rollover carpet (made up of smaller carpets of different sizes), and manually fixed based on certain measurements. Basically the bottom tray in the above video resting on wheels is not present and the bottom storage wouldn’t be that huge or deep below ground level to fit in whole pitch.

I'm wondering if they couldn't just build a metal cover for the grass field. Seems like it would be a lot cheaper to move just metal than metal plus dirt. On the other hand, while it's covered, it can't be treated with light to allow it to grow back. Maybe they made the right decision for once. Didn't expect that to happen in Spain!

1996: AFC Ajax Stadium 55k (NL) first football stadium in the world with a retractable roof. 1998: Vitesse Stadium 26k (NL). First football stadium in the world with a retractable roof and field. 2001: Schalke 04 Stadium 63k (GER). Second football stadium in the world with a retractable roof and field. 2023: Real Madrid Stadium 85k (ESP) third football stadium in the world with a retractable roof and field. It has been quite a long time since another football stadium with a retractable roof and field has been built. (This is about football stadiums and not American football)

Don’t worry. US stadiums dream of having this level of sofistication.

Your forgetting the biggest stadium to have a retractable roof before Real Madrids. The 72k millennium stadium in Cardiff

@Etatdesiege1979 USA stadiums have had retractable roofs for decades now. Isn't necessary to retract field for American football so isn't widely used. My home stadium has had retractable roof since it was built and does lots of other things also, change colors, advertisement screens built in etc. Funny to think some people think usa couldn't build this when usa has built or contributed literally almost ever single important advancement in 20th and now 21st century.😂

The great thing is that having a retractable underground pitch is if there's ever a stadium ban. He'll go to playing behind closed doors, send the pitch underground, and keep the fans above staring at the concrete floor while the game goes on below 😂😂 💰

Amazing engineering but I think this is taking to too far. No more jumpers as goal posts then?

Yes! And so is this newfangled nationality requirement in playing for teams representing nations. Base it all on localities, where you have to have been born there to represent the locality. Wow, just think of what a world-beater Ashington United would have been… Jackie Milburn and both the Charltons! No need for multi-million transfer fees! Jumpers as goal-posts, of course… another prudent saving to be passed on to the fans at the turnstiles. Bob a head and you’re in!

This is amazing. But also scary. If possible to do something like for a game... what is being done in real life every day things... is that really a building? Lol. Sims I tell ya.

Tottenham stadium came first and the retraction is quicker because the pitch only splits into three and all three can go under at the same time.
