This week we leave our Portugal Farm renovation and head far South to Africa and Zimbabwe where we visit Tara's home town and explore the region and country where she grew up. We ask big questions, like "was it scary growing up in Africa" and we visit Taras dusty African home town, and her school.
It's an off the beaten track adventure, we hope you enjoy it, and that this episode gives you greater insight into who Tara is, and what her journey to our Portugal adventure was all about.
Very exciting!!
Please make sure you SUBSCRIBE and join us for the adventure.

I am also Zimbabwean living in the UK. You make me very proud to see that a farm girl from Marondera has what it takes to succeed anywhere. Your upbringing is a true testimony to how hard working and determined we Zimbabwean people are. All the best to your family and God bless and keep you all safe.

I couldn’t stop the tears rolling down my cheeks as I watched this vlog. I last visited Zimbabwe 29 years ago with my parents and my first born who was 9 months old. It the best trip ever back to my homeland. We were farmers from Umvumu area and during our trip my dad (who passed away last year) told me so much about our family heritage and our farm. Was such a special time of treasured moments. 🇿🇼 😊xx

Now that was a look into Tara’s beautiful life in Africa. Never did I see it as an ode to you Tara! All I saw was how your eyes and face lit up as you told us about your family and childhood there. How very special! As a South African this video brought back special feelings and memories for me. Africa is amazing! 🇿🇦❤️

I loved the tone in John's voice when you were talking about waking in the park as children with the wild animals... "Okaaayyy" 🤔I knew what he meant because you were listing the animals that were about and I was thinking we just have Adders, missed "Beware of the Bull" signs and occasional grumpy Geese! 😉The idea of walking through somewhere with antelope on the daily as normal is just mindblowing! Don't feel too left out of this episode, John, because I'm sure there will be a trip back to the UK for you to do the same, and even Finland too as you were there for so long! 😃 Tara, please don't think anyone watching would think this was a narcissistic ode, (if they do then they are quite daft!), I feel quite honoured to be a part of those allowed this insight into your childhood and parts of Zimbabwe that just wouldn't be available in the ordinary way, so thank you, Tara, for sharing it with us all! Wishing you all the happiest of New Years! 🎊🎉✨🌟 *hugs * to you all xx

Beautiful already as a girl, Tara. Your life and way of living now are all linked. That gave you the special gift you had to choose a man like John and to share with him an adventurous way to spend these years with him and with two adorable kids. All the very best to you all. I can't imagine how much your family will miss you again, but, of course, they're aware that you are happily living the way they want to.

Wow, this is the best You Tube film ever. You really were lucky Tara, and the fact you repeatedly acknowledged that is testament to your character. Highlights for me, too many to mention, but I would have loved to buy the fruit you were offered. Crusoe enjoying puddles was wonderful, it’s so important to let children explore the world around them, I remember loving puddles and now in my third age still enjoy walking through autumn leaves, and if there’s a puddle, well, my wellies work … Not enough people enjoy the now, you do and it’s such a joy to share. Take care x

The town is very clean. I grew up in South Africa close to the Zimbabwean border and had quite a few Zimbabwean boarders in our school. I know there are never ending and ever increasing problems in parts of Africa, but I also had an idyllic childhood, regularly going out in the wild. There is something about Africa that is so deep in my blood that I can't imagine living anywhere else. The palpable energy that emanates from the soil, the joy in the people regardless of circumstances, the weather. I think growing up in Africa is a privilege and joy. Absolutely lovely episode.

My Dad farmed at Arizona, the farm to the East of Peterhouse in the late 50s. He was often asked to go out to look for lost schoolboys on the farm on a Sunday night, after the boys had been kicked out of school for the day. I was offered a place at the school, but I turned it down because it was too close to home. I was fascinated though on a visit to the school to see that Dunlopillow mattresses were supplied, as opposed to the straw mattresses that we had at the government schools.

This was so fascinating! While I have traveled quite a bit, I have only been to Africa once and that was Morocco. I now see Zimbabwe in a totally new light and am so happy about that. I grew up in and still live in Texas and get some of the funniest questions, particularly while abroad, about whether Texas is really like people's preconceived notions of it. They want to see my cowboy hat and boots. I have those things but only wear them very occasionally, not daily. I think it is great that you took the chance to provide such an inside view of a country that many people have notions about but will never have the chance to visit and get first hand knowledge. Thanks for sharing!

It's far more interesting to see a place through the eyes of someone you "know" than to watch a load of facts strung together (as in a documentary) because you get to feel the place too. With all that went on in Zim I am amazed that your family still living there. I have a Zimbabwe girl as a cleaner in my house. What a fabulous women. I love her as a daughter and her 2children. Thank You Tara & John. What a privilege to be able to share in your journey. Your generosity in sharing your experiences is so appreciated. My wife Heidi grew up in South Africa and was really touched by so many aspects of the video which are making us rethink our plans to get even more from our next visit 'home'. Like John I grew up in the UK with a standard comprehensive education. My travels are limited to 29 countries and 5 continents so way behind John (and only slightly ahead of Crusoe) but we are thinking big and determined to be brave for more exploration in the coming few years. We did wonder Tara, did you learn any African languages as a child? Thanks again from Steve & Heidi

Reminds me so much of the Free State and Lesotho where I grew up. My husband and I were in a boarding school just outside of Bloemfontein in a farming community. But school holidays were usually in Ladybrand, just on the border of Maseru, Lesotho. And those memories are the treasured ones.

Good morning family, As a middle school teacher here in New Jersey I only wish that more children will have the opportunity to grow and experience a tenth of what your child was like, Tara. I grew up in Uruguay and I was privileged to jump puddles and see people in the market selling goods etc. This video is breathtaking and to see Crusoe with his cousins reminded me a lot of your childhood. I would love to visit Zimbabwe. Is there a travel agency that you recommended? Is there any way to sponsor a child to go to that school? Thank you so much for this video! Sending love from Jersey-Mariana PS- are you familiar with the Reggio Approach for Crusoe or the baby’s education? Fear not-Crusoe can handle none plastic tools (at least some of them). 🤗🤗🤗🤗

Hi there friend. So sorry for the slow (very slow) reply. This is a tricky question and we have been asking around to find the right answers about sponsorship. Sadly no such joy. Growing up in Uruguay must have been excellent fun, a smilier childhood to mine. Thanks so much for watching and taking this journey with us, your support is so very much appreciated! 👍🙏🇵🇹🏡

A lovely episode 😍 I was so looking forward to it and wasn't disappointed. My late husband grew up in Zim, he proudly went to Peter House and called it the Eton of Africa. His parents lived in Harere. When he was diagnosed with terminal cancer 6 years ago he asked if it was possible that I took him home. I laid his ashes at the base of a baobab tree in Hwange National Park. Thank you for giving me a glimpse of the school x x I was pleased to see Crusoe enjoying his puddles 🤣 x x

Thank-you so much for sharing so much of your background, hometown & country with us. It is such a "GIFT" to be invited to take a stroll down memory lane with someone, catching little snippets & glimpses of 'WHY they are now, WHO they are now' (if that makes any sense?). The love, gratitude & pride you have for your parents, family and your country is beautiful and very humbling. I was lucky enough to visit Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and South Africa for just over a month in 2019 ( just months before the world shut down in early 2020) and it was an eye-opening and INCREDIBLE trip! So much history, culture & wonderful people.
