Gta 5 did not like ddr2, get ddr3 kit will perform slightly better. However modern game are mostly require on die memory controller to reduce latency and of die controller like in core 2 era are generally off the contest.

Works great! It's loud on a fan tho! Make sure to use at least 12gb of ram if you have over 75 mods and you're trying to get at least twenty people in your server at all times. The mods I use are very memory intensive though so this might vary.

what motherboard(s) would you reccomend using? i have a Q9650 i intended to use for the IPIBL-LA motherboard in my 2007 HP Pavillion a6220n, but it's maximim Ram capacity is 8gb and there's no bios update file available anywhere at all for the LA series. any reply would be much appreciated :D@@elektroman3187

I would say the 4790 variants are a good starting point in 2023 for modern games, especially the non K variant since it's so cheap right now.

QX9770 is for LGA775 and it's a 3.2GHz chip.

@@RuruFIN Yes quite correct if you can even find one to begin with these days that is...they're as rare as rocking horse dung and the x48 motherboard to go with it for official fsb 1600 support. Might as well just take a Q9450 and upcloxk the fsb to 400 for same 3.2ghz on p35/45 or do a Xeon conversion.as long as mb isn't skimping on the CPU power delivery. circuitry.

Windows ten takes me for sure less than ten minutes to install on any of my dozen boards that have a q series. Takes less than 10 seconds to reboot as well running raid zero on everything I can with ssds as well just because I can.

For sure. Even Windows 10 will feel usable again (provided you got at least 4 gigs of RAM and an SSD already). Keep in mind, the E8300 is basically half a Q9550. The Q9550 can decode 1080p60 youtube videos without dropping frames on my system after everything has loaded in. Though I'd still recommend switching to Xfce or MATE on such old hardware for a much better experience. GNOME is probably the heaviest desktop environment on Linux.

i just got a q9650 to replace my p4 with a new gigabyte motherboard i actually wanted the qx 9650 but was unable to find one and when i did come across one they wanted a crazy amount for it im still keeping my eyes open in case i find one for a reasonable price not paying more than 5-6 hundred

@@jocobibradshaw4950 you are better off without the extreme it requires extreme cooling to get the clocks and at that point it is an energy hog. The q9650 is far more efficient and will clock higher than the extreme if you are using an air cooler.

Was also thinking on just settling on a Q9550 instead. Is there any major perfomance or heat difference between the Q9550 and the Q9650?

@@blueblade455the 9550 and 9650 are pretty close. 9650 is clocked slightly higher but they both overclock well and are so close enough that performance isnt a noticeable leap. stock coolers are enugh to work without overclock but i would be wary of pushing em. 9550 in stock form probably runs a little cooler than a 9650. i would grab a noctua cooler that fits the 775 socket they make a hell of air cooler. look for a d series
