I'm shocked the brains tribe wasn't mentioned as part of this strategy as Tasha, Spencer and Kass all made it deep into the game.

I was surprised you didn't mention Cook Islands, arguably the most successful tribe who entered an alliance at a significant disadvantage and yet all four of them outlasted the rest of the post-merge tribe.

In Australian Survivor 2016, Vavau entered the merge at a disadvantage of 10-3 against Saanapu. After two people from Vavau were eliminated the jury began with Vavau down 10-1. The only person from Vavau became the Sole Survivor, Kristie Bennett.

Might have been the way that season was cut, but we never really saw anything that backed up what she said in her speech... IMO Lee was robbed of that season. Kristie came across as more of a Floater than any tactical genius who “knew who was going home at every tribal”...

That's where the risk comes to play tho. You make it look like you actually want to win, but just doing above the minimum of the worst player in your tribe. You see X doing bad in this swimming challenge do better than him, and it'll look like he was the one dragging everyone down.

I loved your video here are my thoughts. In order for an "Intentional Matsing" to work a few things must happen: 1. You have to lose challenges. (of course if you plan to lose challenges you must be secure in where you stand in your tribe, you have to be in the majority alliance of the losing tribe) 2. Make it to the pre-merge. (this is more of elaboration on #1 your alliance will be weak in numbers, so the people you bring have to be the ones you trust the most) 3. Find those cracks post-merge. ( there are always crack in the dominate alliance tribe, exploit those divisions between people or if you have to create them) 4. Create cracks in dominate alliance post-merge. (if you look at all the unintentional Matsings' that happen it was because cracks were present and the Matsing players took advantage of them) (if these cracks are not there you need to create them thru lies and mind games) 5. Be willing to lose what is left of your original tribe. (you need somebody in the jury lobbying for you be willing to let them go to the jury and do this for you) 6. Bring the Goats. ( find the goats in the dominate tribe and bring them to the end)

Russell Hantz's gameplay in Samoa sort of, kind of, almost brushed up against this strategy. He certainly took steps to tank his tribe, even if tanking that hard wasn't his end goal, and he seemed not to be very invested in whether or not Foa Foa won immunities.

@njc84
@njc84 6 жыл бұрын
It would be. There's no point weakening yourself and going to merge down in numbers on purpose. What if you get there and they're all super tight and there's no way in, it's night night. Best of just playing the way it was intended. If you win immunity, you win, if you lose, you lose. You go to merge with what numbers fate dealt you and take it from there. I actually hate when people throw challenges.
@luisrkillar
@luisrkillar 6 жыл бұрын
Harris Gagnon you also could be seen as weak or a goat by the jury by making yourself look like not a threat or just not a good player. look at sherri she used the same anyone but me strategy, like sandra, but it was seen as she was carried, when in reality that was what her whole gameplay was about, making it to the final 3. it depends on whether your jury is bitter or not at the end of the day

sanvalentine23 My favorite themes in order of absolute favorite down: Pearl Island, China, Ghost Island. The other 3 aren’t themes but the locations alone almost created a theme: Guatemala, Africa (season 3) and 🥁 roll... Palau (because of the World War 2 artifacts and archeology)...here’s one that’ll no doubt garner deep groans: Vanuatu . Aside from Julie who melted my heart, the season kinda sucked but the first episode & earthquakes were uniquely cool. Please keep in mind, these are themes, not the best games strategically or otherwise. Having worked in network TV for 16 years, the fact that Probst wants to “stay in Fiji” has “end of the road” written all over it. There will be a Survivor Season 40 but 🤞🏼for a Season 45. #IWantToPlay ‼️

Only certain people should even consider this strategy. People likely booted early (ie older folks) should not as they will not be around to take advantage of it. Likewise, big, strong, athletic types who are obvious post-merge threats should not as those players will need allies. But if you are a Rob Cesternino type with charisma for days, just enough physicality to not an early boot, and the smarts to realize how to turn allies against each other, this is probably the road map to victory.

Intentional Matsing is a good idea if you can see the future, but in practice it's just too risky. For example, if I was playing, I would never IM because I know my abilities and I know that if I did do it, I would never make it to a position where I am the last one or two people left. If your a strong person in competitions it might be a good idea, but with that as the exception, I have just never thought that you can intentionally do it and have it work. Yes Russell did it in Samoa, but if he did not have all of those idols, it would not have worked, and since the finding of idols can't be done intentionally, this is more of an outlier.
@josephbernados1649

Russell's sabotage strategy in Samoa I think definitely counts as an intentional Matsing but I don't think he had the social chops to actually succeed with it post-merge. Natalie, I feel, was the mastermind behind getting them all to the end despite getting Koror'd earlier on.

Amazing vid!! :) I've got a situation, would you consider this as "intestional matsing"? I hope it is not too confusing, I used random names :D It is final 5, before tribal council The majority: Susy, Dan and Hannah The minority: Joe, Lizzy -Joe, who is in the minority, the biggest threat but has an idol which nobody knows about, has one ally, Lizzy -The majority has one idol, it is in Dans and Susy's hand, they trust Hannah less -Joe feels like Susy is the biggest threat to him from that four since she can beat him in individual immunity. -Hannah won immunity -Joe tries to convince Hannah and Susy to vote with him, bc Dan is the biggest threat, could win in the end, they are crazy to keep him, he is the mastermind, how cannot they see??? etc, knowing that they wouldn't listen but hoping if the majority do have an idol they would use it on Dan. -At tribal: Joe is making statements again against Dan, than plays his idol; the majority stick with the plan, vote for Joe but just for safety, Dan plays the idol (even before Joe played his) just to make sure everything if Hannah flipped or Joe plays an idol( which he does right after). But they have no doubt at all, that Joe is voting Susy, that's how convincing he is!!! - 3 votes are for sure for Joe, AND Joe voted for Susy, since that was his plan all along... Just wanted to make sure they didn't play an idol on her... And Lizzy's vote is either for Dan, or for Susy if Joe trusted her or even for Joe if she flipped, it depends... But the main thing is that Joe made the all circus about Dan being the biggest threat to avoid an idol on Susy and succeed! So what do you think??? :D

You should check out the french Survivor "Koh Lanta" and its edition "Koh Lanta: la guerre des chefs" where they started with 3 teams. The red team came into the merge 6-5-3 down I believe and was the target of all the majority votes. Then when it was 6-5-2, the team of 5 went to blindside a member of the 6 with the help of the minority 2 and it completely shifted the dinamic of the game. Out of these 2 I've been mentioning, one went out on a rock draw at the final 6 (Cyril) which is the last tribal of the game and the other one (Maud) won the game.

I would never go into the game with this strategy, but I think if I was on a tribe (like Matsing) that lost continuously, and I was noticing that there would be no way of catching up to the other tribes, then I would make that my strategy. It just depends on how many members are still on my tribe before the predictable tribe swap occurs.

I’d never consider doing an intentional matsing. It’s risky. I think being on the side with the numbers is the safe strategy. Doesn’t make for good tv, but chances of getting to the end are better imo. Love the vids! I get excited when a new survivor vid is out. My favorite show of all time.

Can you make a video ranking the survivor seasons? I'm kind of getting back into watching Survivor and would like to know the must-see seasons. Spoilers are not a problem for me.

i agree that the INTENTIONAL Matsing doesn't work.....I DO think that when your tribe is initially decimated before the merge....the remaining members form aan enduring bond, that serves them through the rest of the game. I feel tat anyone who attempts the Intentional Matsing is full blown NPD ......and eventually destroys himself and everyone else around him ( lmao ) I also think that CBS is very adept at picking personalities and serves as an exstention of Zimbardo's Stanford Prison Experiment

How do you intentionally throw challenges pre-merge without your tribe wanting to immediately vote you out? Alliances in the beginning of the game almost always agree to vote out the weak challenge performers in the name of "keeping the tribe strong." That phrase is brought almost every season. So for this to work intentionally, you would have to 1. throw challenges by squandering a large enough part of each challenge to actually lose, or by convincing members of your tribe to throw challenges (nearly impossible) 2. Not seem like you are throwing the challenges or your tribe would turn on you to "keep the tribe strong," 3. Join a larger alliance after the merge that is willing to let you work with them without the suspicion that you would swing between larger alliances. Not to mention, seasons nowadays usually do tribe swaps after like two episodes. So I have strong doubts that this "strategy" could ever go well, and it wouldn't leave you in any better of a position as forming a very tight alliance among a larger alliance in a tribe that performed well pre-merge.

I just don't think an intentional Matsing would work simply based on the fact that it requires throwing challenges and voting people out until there's a small number of the people on that tribe left. I can't imagine throwing so many challenges would go un-sniffed by the rest of said tribe. It would be kind of inevitable for the rest of the tribe to realize what was going on, and just have them voted out for trying to intentionally lose. Especially being that poor performance often leads to being sent home. Say two people on a tribe purposely lose continuously--the odds that they are the first to get sent packing are high. Idk it would have to be the perfect scenario and the perfect cast for this to work in my opinion. Another important thing to say about Matsings (this also goes for Pagongings) is that tribal lines don't play much of a role in Survivor anymore. This new idea of voting blocks combined with tribe swaps and other craziness completely rules out tribal alliances surviving the entire game. Moreover, everyone on the show plays hard--meaning they all have their own agenda and are willing to do whatever it takes to get to the end. This being said, when a season gets to the final tribal, no one's pitch for themself to win the game is "my tribal alliance had a numbers disadvantage going into the merge and I still won" anymore. For those reasons I find it quite unlikely.

I would like your thought about nick from dvg, mike and nick were in power and they decided to vote out Lycra, giving the Goliaths the numbers creating this story of nick being the David and do u think mike lost the game there for never being without the numbers? I look back and I think that might have been where nick won the game

Did you know that “Matsing” is the tagalog term for monkey? So it literally translate as “intentional monkey”. Tandang is the tagalog term for “rooster” Kalabaw is the tagalog term for “buffalo”. Specifically, water buffalo. I’m from the Philippines and I like your channel. Why am I only seeing this now?! 😊🤙

I don't see the intentional matsing working because I think intentionally becoming an underdog would feel so unnatural and I think someone from the majority would be smart enough to see right through it. Theres a big difference between feeling hopeless from having no one and purposely putting yourself in that position. What you said about how important knowing how other people perceive you is is so true. Remember they use to have reward challenges back in the day where survivors had to answer questions about others based on what the majority would say. Its always been apart of the game and that's why this is a social/psychological game above all.

I don't remember when, but there was a season where a tribe directly forfeit an immunity challenge to out someone. Fans v favorites I think? The favorites opted to forfeit to out someone. Having said that, they had a 3 or 4 player advantage, so it likely didn't damage them much in the long run

I don't think that I would adopt this strategy out the gate because there are stronger plays that you can do with numbers and self-awareness of perceptions, but if you are in a position where you go down in numbers, I think it makes sense to ride the wave. That being said, it really depends on the season whether or not this would be successful.
