My only thought was "Well, damn."

It would appear that it is an anti-war parable-but Saki (H.H. Munro) himself was so pro-war he actually signed up in his mid-forties to go fight in the trenches, where he subsequently was taken out by German sniper.

That was a twist of a ending, not a good way to go out. Nightmare type of ending to the story.

This story is far from scary and kinda comical tbh
