I always loved the overly complex and seemingly optimistically hyper futuristic aesthetic that seemed to be everywhere in the early 2000s like it wasn’t about functionality but just the unadultered imagination of what the future could hold

I have a Calvin Klein Jacket from around 2003, and it leans into this style. It looks like something you can see in Andor. It has an asymterical zipped flap that covers the main zipper. Also, I think Vexed Generation needs a shout-out in this space. Their work through the 90s and early 2000s is very, very technical and unique.

great video - i always wanted the burton MD ("analog clone") jacket (predecssor to the ipod variant), and when i discovered the term 'techwear' a few years ago i mostly thought 'this is like 90s snowboard/raver stuff with cuffed ankles' - at this point (as the silhouettes of that era have come full circle), it's cool to see the direct correlation.i think much of the DNA of that era persists in snowboard apparel design.
@Reijack

What's fascinating about the Zeon jacket in particular is that the artist who originally designed the Zeon mobile suits for Gundam began his artistic career as a fashion designer for mens businesswear. It would seem this design really has come full circle!

When I was a teenager in the late 90s, I had a snowboarding jacket that came with a built-in clandestine smoking apparatus. It had a bowl under a flap in the wrist of the sleeve, with a tube running up and out near the collar. Perfect for getting secretly blazed on the lift.

Around the same time as those Burton Analog jackets were the Burton Audex: snowboarding jackets with built-in speakers in the hood and Bluetooth capabilities. On the left sleeve, you had a window with a smart watch type interface that controls, making phone calls and audio controls. I still have my jacket from early to mid 2000s but the battery is shot and I don’t even think I have the speaker attachments for the hood anymore. I’ve been interested in getting 3-D printed blanks just to fill the holes up.

I am 38, going on 39. I remember these trends. Honestly I blame video games and anime from the early 2000's. Look at any Square-Enix game from that era. SOOO MANY ZIPPERS AND BELTS. it is undeniably cool, in a "fuck it why not" way. Now I am firmly in the middle aged part of my life. I am looking for cargo pants that don't like I have side airbags, but I want the functionality. The best part about all these jackets and pants, where it eliminated the need for a backpack a lot of the time. (If you had JNCO Jeans they also eliminated the need for a parachute). I am curious to see how all this will be re-imaged when we have reduced the number of things we carry down to a wallet, phone, keys, and maybe a variation of Airpods. Also I am still waiting on my "Back to the Future" self drying jacket and affordable self lacing shoes. THOSE WERE SUPPOSED TO BE OUT 10 YEARS AGO!!!!

Here's a second comment following my digesting the video: - I think it would have been interesting to mention the sustainability aspect of shopping vintage tech items. Buying new petroleum-based clothing (made of polyester and nylon) has a tremendous environmental footprint and buying this stuff second-hand is a real boon from our planet. - That said, as the "CONSOOOOM" comment has underlined it above, shopping vintage tech items we don't really need is just another form of compulsive consumption and those funny little tech clothing videos are not just made to put a smile on our faces: they are advertisements, which I've certainly fallen victim to recently 😅. - To end this on a positive note, I'd say that it is very empowering to discover that a lot of the stuff that comes out today being passed off as new and innovative design is just an iteration of stuff that came out 20 years ago. You can shop second-hand pieces that are very similar to the new stuff (Analog ==> Acronym) for a fraction of the price, given you are reasonable with it and don't start binge-shopping😅.
