The Internet is both an anomaly and a sign of the times. No, I'm not talking about the actual Internet you're using to read this text (though that Internet is pretty special, too), I'm talking about the L.A. band featuring founding members Syd The Kid (vocals/production) and Matt Martians (keys/ production), as well as Pat Paige (bass), Jameel Bruner (keys) and Chris Smith (drums).
The band might just be the oddest thing to come from Odd Future, the collective known for its irreverence - and, of course, for making hip-hop. The Internet doesn't stand out from the rest of Odd Future because of any over-the-top antics, but because they make great R&B music. Beautiful, textured, enveloping R&B. Sure, the swagger of hip-hop is apparent in Syd's songwriting and the swing of the beats, but that doesn't mean it's adulterated - theirs is some of the most refreshing neo-soul to come out in years, and it's created by a band whose members were small children or not even born when the subgenre came to be in the mid- to late '90s. That's where the sign-of-the-times part comes in; while some decry the death of musicianship at the hands of samplers, drum machines and computer programs, we need look no further than the L.A. band for evidence to the contrary.
Seeing is believing, so the band stopped by NPR's D.C. offices for a Tiny Desk performance that'll give you a taste of the new Ego Death and a song from 2013's Feel Good. Watch the performance and put your Internet service to good use.
Ego Death is available now.

I think it's pretty messed up that in our generation people are amazed that a singer from a group can actually sing live, I mean it's their only job! Back in the day if you couldn't sing, you didn't sing.

Live vocals have never been this band's strong point, but they make up for it melodically, and with their songwriting and just overall good vibes. It's hard not to root for this band. They need to know what songs sound good live and what doesn't. They should create songs that work for Syd live. The larger they become the more live performances they will have. Dope tho

+Tony Spade you know what? hopefully live they can use full backing and vocals to get close to what we listen to on the cd. this is a deconstructed performance. lets see what they do when i see them in concert.

+Tony Spade It's weird I always attribute this to Janet Jackson. She popularized soft, yet complex vocal melodies. It worked for Janet live, because that was her voice. But other artists such as Aaliyah and Syd the Kid choose it as a stylistic choice in the studio, but it never worked for them in a live setting, because their voices weren't much denser than what they did in the studio. Still dope though.

+Tony Spade It's so weird though because I've seen them live twice now and the vocals have been flawless, I think sometimes the recordings don't do them any justice. Her voice has definitely grown with each performance though you can tell!

+Tony Spade The vocals are very well done here. Unfortunate that some listeners of heavily produced genres apparently lack the musical experience and context to understand what aspects of a finished vocal sound they hear on a recording are the result of the original source sound (voice into microphone) and what aspects are the result of various production techniques that they should not expect to be reproduced live. The complaints about the vocals on this video seem to be entirely over the fact that listeners are not hearing the textures they hear on the album recordings. No shit... the vocals on the album are recorded in isolation, carefully compressed, equalized, widened in various ways, very often doubled, tripled, etc., include harmonies, and are incorporated in the final mixes in various ways (compression and EQ buses, etc.) that are not realistic to reproduce in this live environment. What you hear in the video is very well done unprocessed singing that likely sounds very close to the source vocal takes used in the album tracks before they've been doubled, widened, compressed, eq'd, mixed, etc.

stethoscanomaly My point was they should create songs that are truer to Syds natural abilities, so that when the live performance arrives the delivery doesn't fall flat. Pharrell had to learn the same thing.
