In 1847 the Choctaw, a Native American tribe, helped the people of Ireland who were struggling with famine. A friendship between the two nations was formed that is still alive today.

The Choctaw said they had walked the Trail of Tears and that now the Irish were walking their Trail of Tears. They said they had not been able to help themselves on the death march trail, but they COULD help the Irish, so they sent 170 dollars during the potato famine, which was the equivalent of about 5000 dollars in buying power today. Now, thousands of Irish people are sending money to their Choctaw benefactors to help with pandemic relief. The wheel turns, and the love and kindness is being repaid.

It is because of him that i was made aware of Indians and i know about lots of different tribes, the Choctaw, Cherokee, Modoc, Powhatan, Mandan and so on. Whenever i am feeling bored by modern culture, which is always, i will learn something new about any of those tribes, it makes me feel so enriched and i start to see the world as the natives do. This was always why my super Fenian great grandmother was always super supportive of First Nations causes to the point of teaching us about the residential schools here in Canada by talking about similar schools in Ireland. Her point was everything colonial powers did to Indigenous people all over the world was practiced and tested on the Irish. That was why we should identify with them and support those made to suffer under imperialism. I’m glad of those lessons.

The Britishers did the same thing to Indians with the famine of Bengal. The difference here, is that it happened during the world wars, and the British exported all their grain from Bengal (in India) to Britain, as "stockpile reserves" "just in case" while Begalis were dying in the streets in the millions. India was governed by Britain for the benefit of Britain and nothing more. This famine was deliberately manufactured by Churchill - who, replying to the few conscious stricken British offcials, wrote 'the Indians are a beastly people with a beastly religion,' 'they breed like rabbits', and on the margins of the letter, 'why hasn't Gandhi died yet?' My deepest sympathies to the Irish, and for the sufferings of the Choktaw. I am awestruck to see such wonderful kindness in this world and marvel at your relarionship. May it continue to be strong 💪😊🙏 love from an Indian!

Very interesting video. Much of my family migrated to the US from Ireland in the mid-1800's due to the potato famine. The Choctaw must have been welcoming to the Irish immigrants even before the famine, though. My Great-Great-Great Grandpa, named Wiley, was Choctaw. He was born in 1810. He had married an Irish immigrant who later gave birth to my Great-Great Grandpa, James King, who was born in Mississippi in 1838, several years before the famine. James later fought in the Civil War. His son, my Great Grandpa Obed King, became a share cropper and worked alongside many ex-slaves who became share croppers after slavery ended. So, many of his friends and people he considered his family were ex-slaves. I find interesting that the Mexicans and the Irish also have a very good history (an interesting one, too, if you care to look into it). It seems like the Irish basically got along with everyone in the Americas other than the Europeans (and their descendants), ironically. It makes for an interesting discussion on human nature, social hierarchies, etc.

I’m so proud that these people were good to my country. I’m reading the Irish American Cormac McCarthy’s “Blood Meridian” about the extermination of indigenous groups. Im so keen to learn more about these people.

I have always known I was Choctaw but until last year I didn’t know what else I was … I did a DNA test and discovered I was also Irish. .. I didn’t know about this connection until seeing this video.

The Celta were Christianised in a very similar manner as the Turtle Island Indigenous. Only much longer ago. Celts and Turtle Island Indigenous people both have very long memories! I think we should not only be fond of each other. I think we should all support each other. Out value systems the Turtle Island Indigenous are very similar. After learning just what the Turtle Island Indigenous children learn . The way they connect with nature and the olanet is something to envy. Just knowing that we are each and every living is made of the same molecules as us and in being composed of the same elements all life is different expressions of the same thing, and we are a part OF not alart FROM all of the beauty of the Universe! If we look at recent history as a reflection of thinking that we are seperat and above creation. We end up becoming casualties of our own stupidity! Rome put everyone on the wrong page. Rome put us all on that page none the less. Money was the tool used . We must. abolish the use of money of any type. End investing . End war End discrimination. Most of all, do it in a peaceful manner. There is nothing violent about refusing to use a toxic substance!

Interesting I like to wonder about if the Irish had come here before the French and English..seems like the Irish would have retained honor much more and would have co-existed instead of conquered. The world would be a better place.

Funnily enough there is actual evidence that some of the first europeans ever in America were of Irish heritage, the Duhare had a lot in common with the Gaelic Irish when Christopher Columbus' crew came upon them and was taken note by some of the historians with him. St Brendan's voyage in the 6th centaury described mountains of crystal (icebergs) and islands with rivers of fiery gold (volcanoes) meaning it's very likely Irish monks reached the mid Atlantic ocean ridge over 1,000 years before Christopher Columbus's voyage. Considering there's plenty of evidence the Vikings were the first Europeans to reach the Americas, the welsh and Irish considering the evidence both probably reached the Americas long before the Spanish did. If you want to look into the Duhare it's a very interesting read, they were described as white and culturally had a lot in common with the Gaelic Irish but assimilated into the native population while bringing their own ideas.
