It's time for the 4th episode in our getting started series. This time out, we are going more in-depth and looking at not only legion traits but the Rite of War, as it's almost integral to how you'll run your legion.

Remember, as always this is a demo army. You don't have to follow my advice, you don't have to buy the units I do, I just suggest a force which embodies the spirit of the Legion, and is designed as a core which you can build further around to go from a 2000 point force up to many times that. If you have any questions or want clarification, as always, ask away!

First of all, big fan of your videos. As a big Iron Warriors fan I felt guilty enjoying the Imperial Fists video. There's just something about Cataphractii with Storm Shields. I wish that was a thing for Iron Warriors too. I have a question! How do you feel about Iron Warriors running Pride of the Legion? Could you make an effective army with mostly Cataphractii? I don't feel Tartaros is very fitting for Iron Warriors.

I wish the Legion rules included some sort of melee bonus to represent how the Iron Warriors were comparable to Blood Angels and World Eaters when assaulting breaches. You can remedy this by fielding a unit of Weaponmasters Veterans with power weapons. Other than that, you raise some interesting points. I don’t personally field Tyrants, I prefer normal Terminators armed with twin lightning claws (just for the looks). I wish you focused more on the Iron Havocs though, some of the best anti-tank, -elite and -air in the game when given missile launchers or lascannons. The missile launchers come standard with all types of missile, and the lascannons, while pricey, also kick major ass. BS 5 lascannons/missile launchers with tank hunter and a rule to lower cover saves? Kicks all sorts of ass, and you don’t have to give them expensive transports if you’re careful with deployment or go with more than one unit. From a fluff perspective, MK IV and Tartaros gear is just as appropriate as MK III and Cataphractii, since the Fourth were close to the Mechanicum and in general one of the most technologically able Legions. Moreover, they took part in field-testing the earliest MK VI suits, so they’re not too out of there either, I’d say. I usually like to give my guys lots of advanced weaponry to reflect their lore, so lots of conversion beamers, plasma guns and the like. Canonically, Dreadnoughts and Terminators of all sorts were very common in the Legion, so it’s appropriate to field lots of them (with the possible exception of Leviathans - they were extremely rare when the Heresy broke out and only the Loyalists got replacements for them)

I have a few reasons for my lack of time given to the unit, First of all, I spent a lot of time waffling on at the start, as unlike some legions, this one really plays to the rules given to it specifically. Secondly, I think people will learn just what their units can do over time, so I don't need to dwell too long on that. Lastly, these videos are about things which embody the legion, in this case a sprinkle of tanks, terminators, a dreadnought, and the main emphasis is on firepower and artillery. It's important that people see these videos as a stepping stone, that they should use some, if not most, of these units as the core of their army and build it up from there, experimenting and finding what works best for them.

Fergus Shaw yes and no, they got a fair bit of it, but often chose to keep the MKIII as the heavy frontal armour better suited their style of methodical attrition warfare, and their high casualties led to massive losses of the limited supply of new armour. But play it how you like, I think both armour types are valid and I myself have used MK IV in my own army.
@andrewmcnally5013
@andrewmcnally5013 6 жыл бұрын
Fergus Shaw it would make more sense to use Mk IV armours on your more elite choices, like a command squad or a HQ choice, as commanders are less likely to die 9/10 times and they're better protected by a better suit of armour

I really like this series and I hope you see it through to the end. To add my own opinions, if I were to start a basic 30k army I’d do it by getting the Betrayal at Calth/Burning of Prospero box set and getting 2 more Mark 3/4 squads made by GW. The main reason for this is to get a total of 50 tactical marines, with all their special/heavy weapons. If I’m correct on what extra pieces you get, by getting the box set and 2 more squads, then using every special/heavy weapon available, you should end up with... - 5 plasma gun marines (1 made as sergeant) - 5 melta gun marines (1 made as sergeant) - 5 flamer marines (1 made as sergeant) - 5 heavy bolter marines (1 made as sergeant) - 5 missile launcher marines (1 made as sergeant) - 22 regular bolter marines - 3 standard sergeants With this combination you can do a lot. For starters you can have… - Two 10-man tactical squads - One 5-man tactical squad (use as proxies for something) - Three 5-man tactical support squads - Two 5-man heavy support squads. That’s five troops choices (2 compulsory), and two heavy support choices, in addition to the two HQs, and two elites choices you get form the Betrayal at Calth set. A full army right there. Alternatively, you could mix and match the weapons to create three 10-man squads + addition support squads. For example… - Three 10-man squads (1 sergeant, 7 bolters, 1 flamer, 1 missile launcher each) - One 5-man plasma gun squad - One 5-man melta gun squad - One 5-man heavy bolter squad With that you’d have a few spare marines, 1 bolter, 2 flamers, and 2 missile guys exactly. But you would have either three veteran squads + 3 support squads for 30k, or 3 tactical squads + 2 veteran squads + 1 heavy squad for 40k. And of course that’s just one combination, you can mix and match the special/heavy weapons to your heart content. I personally think it’s a good idea for a starter army, which would work for any legion that isn’t 100% close combat orientated. I don’t play 30k yet however, so maybe what I’ve suggested is trash. It’s what I’m planning to do whenever I get around to collecting a 30k army however, so I hope it works.

You simply wouldn't use it all. Most armies can't afford to lose so many points to basic-bitch infantry. I know that's a cop-out, but tactical support squads are very pricey, and you have just 5 guys in power armour who will become targets. A lot of their equipment is short range, so you're forced to invest in transports if you want to use them to best effect. 5 plasma gun tactical support squads are around the 200 points mark, which means that between them and a melta unit, with just rhino transports, you've almost spent 500 points. That's the cost of a unit of Tyrant Siege Terminators with a few upgrades! As for the heavy bolter squad, I think it's fine with heavier squads as the range game, and especially with Iron Warriors and Dark Angels, the specialist ammunition, maybe also Imperial Fists, means that they will earn their points. In any other legions, Volkite Culverins are the logically superior choice of heavy support weapon. Better range, higher strength, more shots and deflagrate.

Tacticals can't take Special or Heavy Weapons. You have 2 squads and a wack selection of support infantry.
@Appolyon
@Appolyon 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not so sure about the two tanks. Land Raiders and Spartans are Transport Vehicle, they're to expensive to take them just as battle tanks. The Tyrant Siege Terminators don't want to be transported, they want to shoot. If you want fire power, I'd recommend Vindicators with Machine Spirit and perhaps rapiers with Laser Destroyer Array.

Ryan remove the iron Havocs, replace with a Medusa squadron or a Whirlwind Scorpius, use a master of signals to help "aim" the units, or increase ballistic skill, and use the Siege Breaker to add Phosphex shells to the Medusa.
@J_Warral
@J_Warral 6 жыл бұрын
Do Medusa really need a Phosphex? AP2 is AP2 and I am not sure Crawling Fire is worth it. It is worth on Quad Mortars. Also, what about new opbrokenashell Sicaran Arcus? Your choice of either AP2, Skyfire, Instant Death on Automata, Ignore Cover AP4 - and all of it on sweet Sicaran platform? Asking cause I am about to make my own Iron Warriors army and besides classical Hammer of Olympia, I want to make a fluffy armored force (basically, lots of stock Predators, supported by some elite tanks and Rhinos with infantry).
@TheOuterCircle
@TheOuterCircle 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks to the Rite of War and Crawling fire a full battery of Medusas/Basilisks can just make every single shot count. The Siege Breaker is going to e there regardless, it's just a bonus that you can add phosphex. The Arcus is in my X legion list, but there's nothing wrong with using it in an Iron Warriors list, it does benefit from the Rite of War, however, the bombardment of Achilles Land Raiders and Medusas, back by Tyrants is a triple threat in heavy support you just want. The tyrants essentially give you that Spartan without eating up a Force Org slot, and the Achilles can be used to great effect to hold small units for capturing ack-line objectives.
