In this week's WTF Happened to this Horror Movie?! episode we take a gander at the shit show that was the production of the once Richard Stanley directed The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996); which became a John Frankenheimer film when stars Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer basically acted out of line throughout and Stanley got fired. But there's way more to the story.... WAYYYY more! Tap the video and discover one of the most horrendous film production in history.
SERIES SYNOPSIS: Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster, but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs. Either way, we have to ask: WTF Happened To This Horror Movie?

@@KRhetor clearly you're over 60 to hold such an opinion but you don't understand nostalgia. Everyone looks fondly on the things they saw for the first time. It doesn't make them the best. There's no such thing as a useless remake as they are made for other people. You do get that some things are not for you right? Or are as selfish and arrogant as you appear?

You can see Richard Stanley's script shine through in this movie in legitimately good moments. While it is a tonal mess I also don't think this movie's nearly as bad as people say. Brando's perfect as the super eccentric Doctor (far more interesting than Burt Lancaster's portrayal) but it's a shame he's killed off so early.

You forgot to mention that Fairuza Balk, had enough of all the BS and literally went AWOL trying to fly back to the US. The producers intercepted her at Sydney airport and literally threaten her, that the studio would blacklist and sue her for breach of contract! So reluctantly, she agreed to return to the movie. When the main actress of the movie was so fed up,run away and had to be literally coerced into returning to shoot the movie, you can imagine what an absolute clusterf*uck this production must have been!

I honestly never got why this film was so panned. The script is never cheesy, the beasts look creepy, the soundtrack is great, and Brando's suggestions for Dr Moreau (white makeup, ad-libbing about the heat, wearing an ice bucket etc) made his character more realistic as someone cooped away on an island for decades.

@@jarg8 It's not well edited and it's rushed but the story of Moreau always come down to similar beats in most adaptations. It's a simple story. You watch the 1970s version with Burt Lancaster and Michael York and it's essentialy the same. Although I prefer the 1970s version and I much prefer Lancaster over Brando. there's a particular twist that I like about the 1970s version with the Micheal York character that I liked.

Marlon Brando's daughter's name Cheyenne is pronounced like the tribe or the city in Wyoming, not Shane.

I know people hated this movie but I like it. Of course I never knew of the original at the time. I remember watching it in the theater with a friend when we were kids and I didn't really enjoy it much but watching it again years later it was better than I remembered. Not necessarily the movie as a whole but I thought the creature creations were great. Ron Perlmans sayer of the law, the hyena was a bit off as far as hyenas go but overall wasn't bad, Lomi, a full on head to toe creation. Probably could have been casted a little better and it has its criticisms but most movies do.

4those who do not know, this movie is historical known threw out all actors in USA' because of all the strange & bullying & ironic events that took place threw out the filming... its very similar to '''little fauss & big halsey''' & the story behind its filiming (which is very diff thn) ''IODM''... All the actors tht played all the animals & creatures tho were praised 4there work.. It was really val tht caused alot of problems on set' val replaced bruce willis just 10days B4 filming started,,,rest of story 2much 2tell,,,just look it up.. (& 4those who dont knw val was youngest actor ever to have A full scholarship given 2him by: Julia Arts academy at barley 17yrs old) thts why his career went downhill instead of up' alot say.

This was still far superior to the Burt Lancaster version. Nothing, of course, come close to the original Charles Laughton version. Nobody seems brave enough to make a version as risque and horrific as the original.

I became a fan of Kilmer when he was Batman, he was my first Batman that I saw in the theater, so the next year and coincidentally on a day right after I had a surgery of my own, I woke up to my mom telling me she's taking me to see this, I was 9 so some of it was lost on me at the time, the scene of Montgomery giving them narcotics to get them to take their endorphins and hormones was one of them, but I understood enough to get the movie, I had no idea at all what a dick Kilmer was maybe not so much before that movie and Batman, but he starting becoming one around that time, but I enjoyed the movie and much more now that I understand all of it. I honestly don't understand why it wasn't more popular, it's different, it's unique, Kilmer despite his carnage behind the scenes was still an intriguingly spastic character, it was a movie with pop, surprise, convincing make up, twists and turns, and it's pretty dark with dark humor with so much of it being straight from the novel with certain updated changes to fit a more modern day version of the at the time 100 year old H.G. Wells story. I honestly think it's one that at a first glance you miss all the intellectual themes, the ominous plot and symbolism, things like darwinism, ego, Pandora's box, control, power, perfection, etc.but watching it a few times you start to see it's value more and more. Don't say it's a bad movie because of the nightmarish hell of a production, Brando did phone his lines in but even he didn't give a lacklustered performance as far as executing. It really is a movie I love and love introducing to people because everyone I've shown it to enjoys it.

In this version I felt the actors were men pretending be animals where as the original the actors portrayed as animals pretending to be men.
