Many countries have a city or state that they claim to not exist. Italy's version is the small, mountainous region of Molise. Why was Molise chosen for the joke and what is the region like?

Yes, it exists; actually in Albanian language "molisë" means "debilitate", "molisur"-debilitated". Maybe that´s why the joke..

I think the joke started because Italy is filled with landmarks and culturally relevant places, but Molise has relatively fewer compared to other regions and therefore is not talked about all that much

my grandma was born in jelsi molise sadly she died last month and my other grandma was born in gardini naxos in sicily she died 1 year ago

Lol the joke didn't start with a Twitter hashtag, was already old enough to be an established joke and appear in italian comics in 2004, before Twitter was even online.

I'm an American citizen. I was born in Pettoranello, di Molise, Italy. It's a quiet, secluded medieval village. My father owns an old baron's palace built in the 1600's.

I been there in september 2020 for 10 days, based my self in Termoli and discover the region on motorcycle. Both apartment and food was cheaper then the average in Italy, the beaches are nice and not crowded like in Apulia although not on the same level. The mountains are stunning, and there are many sites of Sanniti people and a Roman town well preserved and completly free to get in. Also i found nice rivers to have your bath in cold but crystal clear water with amazing waterfall

Definitely agree on the food, surprisingly cheaper even compared to things in the USA, some things 2 or 3 times cheaper in the small markets, just came back from a 3 week trip, my 19th one in Molise, near Termoli, family from San Martin in Pensilis, a very quiet laid back tranquil region and people

Well...sorry to bust the conspiracy theory but I can assure you the region does exist. My grandfather was born in Rotello, Campobasso in Molise (although referred to himself as Abruzzese until the day he died). I was very fortunate to visit my relatives there with him many years ago in this beautiful region of Italy!😊

Got into genealogy recently to see if I could find my family still in Europe. My family came here from Isernia, so I was excited to find out more. Now I know I do not exist. :(

My family comes from Molise! Mirabello Sannitico, near Campobasso (like all the other comments say lol). There are a ton of mountains and very few people.

As a molisan we do exist yes we are not as popular as other regions thats the joke but italians are competitive and proud peoples so arrogance runs in our blood as our passions so its a beautiful area my ancestors are from there and am proud!
