Did the Japanese have Tiger tanks - its been suggested for decades, and now here's the evidence. The story is pretty surprising and so are the photographs!

Did you forget the Japanese-Soviet Non-aggression Pact, signed on 4/13/1941, which allowed the USSR to move its Siberian divisions to defend Moscow in Operation Barbarossa?
@kamikazestryker

@@siberiantiger3917 but Russian would break it as soon the Germany were defeated, this non aggression pact was never to be trusted from both sites. The Russian wanted their former land back mostly Sachalin and Kuril Islands, which they did after the first Atombomb fell in Hiroshima, they needed to act as long Japan was still fighting the war. They lost it during the Japanese- Russian War in 1905. The reason why Japan never actually broke it, was simply because of the Pacific War, but they too would break it as soon the Allies in the Pacific Theatre were defeated, which never happened.

I was thinking, no, the jungle conditions and teeming rains that produced quagmires would've gobbled up a heavy tank like the Tiger, but then I recalled the Australian Army deployed Centurions in Vietnam with fairly good service record.
@thedungeondelver
@thedungeondelver 5 жыл бұрын
the US deployed M47s and M48s (as well as M551 Sheridan, and others) under the same conditions, but the mechanical record of both of those tanks were sterling, and both the US and Australia had the logistics train to support heavy armor in those conditions. The Japanese were stretched too thin by the time the Island Campaign began in depth. They might have been useful as pillboxes, though, given their toughness.
@Riceball01

Mud would have definitely posed a problem but the Japanese really didn't fight in or from the jungle that much. Aside from the isolated sniper or two, the Japanese preferred to operate in the open, like any other army, rather than in the jungle.

Despite it's size the tiger had such a big track that it's ground pressure per square in was quite light. That issue not withstanding it is questionable whether the Japanese could establish a logistical network to support a tiger. The big issue would be the deployment of tigers to the Pacific islands. I speculate that it would have been viable for the defense of the Japanese Homeland only or China
@taggartlawfirm

A Tiger wasn’t a Centurion. The Centurion was more advanced and reliable than the Tiger, in addition, supply and maintenance techniques available to the Ozzie’s were far more advanced and effective. Not to mention 20 years to refine doctrine, tactics and procedure, as well as arty support and air cover. But we can all admit that Vietnam Nam wasn’t really a tank war. The biggest turd in the punch bowl, would be the Japanese lack of heavy lift capacity. They could barely serve their existing island hopping and light infantry intensive military... to move a Tiger, let alone a Tiger unit and the attendant fuel and maintenance supplies was difficult for the Germans, it would have been essentially impossible for the Japanese. Further, w out proper doctrine, a Tiger, in the jungle or more common mountainous terrain, slowed and stripped of infantry, would have been relatively easy prey for the crowbar and satchel charge. Japanese Tigers would have likely been wasted as pillboxes w a mobility capacity. The Japanese would have been far better served by buying or building licensed Panzer III’s. (not the Stug. It wouldn’t adapt well to jungle warfare) The Panzer III was much better than the existing Japanese junk tanks, an established reliable design, superior to anything the Japanese would encounter in China and with the long 50mm (provided an HE shell was available) an easy equal to the M3-M5s the US favored for island warfare, and not too disadvantaged against a Sherman at close range and a side or ass shot ( kinda like the Sherman vs. the Tiger), not to mention relatively easy to transport and support. Besides it was cheap!!! Anyone disagree?

@jeffpurcell7035 5 жыл бұрын
The Japanese didn’t have the steel or enough spare heavy production to build tanks in any realistic numbers but the main problem was that the Japanese Army didn’t really put any effort in tank doctrine or training for officers in tank warfare.
@hoodoo2001
@hoodoo2001 5 жыл бұрын
The Japanese main opponents were Chinese that would fight and then retreat to new positions, they would give away land for time. They were playing the long game. There was nothing for Japanese tanks to exploit. The Japanese didn't have a lot of use for tanks in defensive island fighting. What they could have used was small mobile tank destroyers taking advantage of interior lines. But they were going to lose anyway.

I don't think they need them these days! Even compared to monsters like the Challenger 2 and Abrahms tanks, the Japanese still have access to some pretty lethal stuff if they wanted it. Their 'Type 90' is a very capable vehicle. Thankfully it seems they learned a lot from WW2 and state that they only have an army for self defence purposes now.

A big thing people forget about Japanese Tanks is they were very good when built and extremely good for the area of use they needed them for, Even the out dated tanks managed to cause havoc especially against the British in the early stages as they had no tanks to counter attack with, It is a similar story in China with the early tanks the Japanese rolled over their enemy it was not until the Chinese were given their own tanks that it started to get messy. Japanese tanks even stood up to Russian tanks at a few stages. By 1940 onward they were no good really for what we consider modern tank use, but they were light agile small and nimble which really helped them in the jungles and were easily shipped to small atolls and islands.

I forget now which book I read the account in, but there was a Sherman crew who fired on a Japanese tank and completely freaked out because it seemed like their shells weren't doing a damn thing. Finally they tried an HE round and the tank went up like a Roman candle. Afterwards, when they examined the wreckage they saw that their initial shots - all with AP - had simply been punching through one side and going out the other.

Waqar Ahmad I remember an interesting point when I was reading about the 1911 pistols, and how the modern productions of these pistols are nowhere near as reliable as their older counterparts. You can produce every part of a machine within specifications; but when you fit these parts together and expect it to work, chances are some fine tunings are needed even if everything do fit. And that’s why just having a blueprint won’t help the Japanese produce tigers. They need to know how, and where to modify it if they ever do produce one in their own factory.

Is'nt the Chi-ri planned to mount 75 mm autoloader?
@Schnittertm1
@Schnittertm1 5 жыл бұрын
@@eugeneyesledge It certainly was a problem with production back then, as often times blueprints were made, but in production things were modified. A similar thing happened with the Saturn V F1 engines, which you would not be able to reproduce with just the blueprints alone nowadays, as many parts were hand crafted or hand modified during production. With todays computer aided and robotic design and manufacturing technology, though, you would be able to transfer a blueprint and have the parts fit together without trouble. Still doesn't mean that you won't make modifications to things, like the US did when they adapted the Rheinmetall 120mm gun for the M1 Abrams in the form of the M256, using slightly different alloy compositions to deal with somewhat higher pressures in the barrel and a different recoil system and rotating the breech block by 90°, so that it fit in the M1 turret.
@hammergon587
@hammergon587 5 жыл бұрын
@Soren G From what I understand the Chi-Ri was never planned to mount a modified Type 99 88mm gun. Instead it was planned to mount a variant of the Type 5 75mm with a loading assistance tray. The tray is the main reason why the Chi-Ri's turret was so large. Although the Chi-Ri never actually had a main gun mounted before the project was cancelled.

Knowing what they had already bought from the Germans I am not surprised they were interesting in the German tanks. But all things considered I would have thought they would have been better served by technical information, as well as the plans for the various tanks in use by Germany.
@Riceball01
@Riceball01 5 жыл бұрын
Buying would be faster for them, since it takes time to set up factories, get the tooling made, and train personnel to produce the tanks. So by buying them they would have tanks ready to go while they're busy setting things up to the produce them domestically. However, they probably would have a hard time producing Panthers and Tigers due to the lack of raw materials and competition with the Imperial Japanese Navy for them, esp. for steel. When it came to strategic resources like steel, priority always went to the IJN so at best the Japanese Army would have only been able to produce Tigers & Panthers in very limited numbers.

@@Riceball01 I seriously doubt that Tigers and Panther would of been suitable for the Pacific theater. Japanese tank designs are the way they are because of the local terrain. Heck I seriously doubted the heavier Japanese designs. I think the Chi-Nu was the best design the Japanese came up with that would work in the local terrain. In fact the Chi-Nu was a working design that was produced in 1944 to 1945. Problem was the Japanese kept it for home defense making it useless. The Chi-Nu was based on Chi-He so it didn't even need to wait for Germany to give technical support. It was the perfect tank to build, but the IJN needed the steel for destroyers and carriers. Tigers and Panther would be too big for SEA jungles and even in the home front, most Japanese bridges would not support them.

Another great video Mr Felton! Well done. Very interesting indeed. I really like to see / hear about the various nations tanks being used by opposing or other allied forces. I've been quite interested in some of the Italian tanks and vehicles lately. Apparently some were put into service by the germans and the allies also, but i wasn't really able to find many pictures. It would be interesting to see a video on something like that in future.

The Germans were well known for putting anything they got in enough quantity into service. This is why you see Panzer 38Ts early on in the war because they got a ton of them when they took over Czechoslavakia. When they eventually conquered France they in turn put French tanks into service and when things were going well during Barbarossa, they put all sorts of Soviet equipment into service.

@Fire Power701 @boltanadzo TV Not really, in many ways Imperial Japanese Empire, was probably better off for metals & metal bearing ores/rocks than Germany was, at least at the start of their respective hostilities. They did get some plans/details of the Tiger E/1 (H), as when combined with their improving Type 1 Medium Tank Chi-He (2601/1941) & Type 4 Medium Tank Chi-To (2604/1944) design trends, with Eatern Front combat data, lead towards the Japanese's interpretation of a Tiger, the Type 5 Medium Tank Chi-Ri (2605/1945) prototype machine. Another thing that really didn't help them was the continued heavy rivalry and hatred between the Army and the Navy, and the few things they tolerated having to share. Generally dispising being forced to if not help each other, then at least share some information enough for pre-planning purposes - you could say the Japanese Military was like two non-identicle twins who immensely disliked the other, barely communicating at all to other through the struggling War Office parent. The Japanese only really lacked rubber and oil(s), enough of a merchant fleet to transport supplies, troops and raw materials, or the need to keep producing its merchantmen. Also lacked foresight to create a back-up encryption codes & methods not related to existing systems still in or withdrawn from use, and the continued priority of aircraft, ships and ammunition over and before any vehicle & small-arms R&D. with regards strategic materials & personsal/workforce allocations. I do not mean to give offence, or the impression I support or condone what acts of horror some of its imperial troops/politicians did do.
