"I was born a poor black child." I cannot say this out loud without laughing. Fun Fact: Bernadette Peters is actually playing the trumpet. She's actually proficient with three different brass instruments and of course, Steve Martin is actually playing the ukulele. Also, RIP M. Emmet Walsh (1935-2024). Super underrated actor and may he rest in peace.

@mymyersfamily Yes, he is! I have a stand-up album. I bought a couple of years after this film that showcased him playing "Dueling Banjos". I also remember him from "Midnight Special." He also recorded an album with Mark O'Connor, Yo-Yo Ma and Edgar Meyer. Really great music.

I was having a party at my property and was walking from the horseshoe pits to the camper to get another beer. My daughter was coming to the pits to watch carrying her stuff and dragging her camp chair behind her. I looked at her and in my best Steve Martin voice said, All I need is this chair. I swear it was 20 minutes before she could stop laughing and stand up again. Her and I quote this movie all the time.

At the time this movie came out Steve Martin was a bona fide rock star, having fully solidified his talents on many appearances of the original Saturday Night Live years. I saw him live during his 'Wild and Crazy Guy' standup tour (his last) and he was amazing. Always loved his offbeat brand of comedy.

"I was born a poor black child...." What I always remember from this movie is pizza in-a-cup; we've got a restaurant chain here in the Kansas City area called 'In A Tub,' that sells tacos in cups, so I'm always reminded. Steve Martin is an incredible physical actor; he puts all of his manic energy into every move. You guys have seen him in 'Planes, Trains, and Automobiles,' so you've seen him in action, before. For a different Steve Martin character, check out 'All of Me;' he plays an attorney managing the...unusual Estate of a snobbish rich lady (Lily Tomlin). It runs in a less-manic groove, but it still has lots of Steve's humor and his inimitable physical acting.

Steve Martin was great in 1989's Parenthood as well - with a A-list cast: Rick Moranis, Mary Steenburgen, Keanu Reeves, just a great funny movie. All based on the director (Ron Howard) and producer's real lives. And if you're in the mood for a musical, there's always the classic Little Shop of Horrors (Steve Martin Rick Moranis, John Candy in a bit part) and some interesting vegetation.

Steve Martin’s standup comedy is so good. He stopped completely at the peak of doing arenas and this was his first movie after that. His standup is still to this day is still top tier and unique because he played a very silly character on stage mixed with some arrogance. It’s my favorite standup of all time. But as he wrote in his autobiography, because he’s also a very good writer, it was really lonely for him traveling around trying his material out on the road during the 70s.

Steve Martin came along with his crazy humor at just the right time. You should check out his stand up album Let’s Get Small.

I saw this in the theater when I was 12. LOL. It formed my comedic style going forward. :D My Mom regretted letting me see it.

I'll never forget it. My folks had a weekend condo in Palm Springs, three of my high school friends were with me for Christmas break, it was raining so we went to see this on a Saturday afternoon and never laughed harder. You remember those things you know?
