My cousin Ginny Ortiz is actually in this movie. She plays the snack bar girl. In the script, David Patrick Kelly (Luther) was actually supposed to throw the candy bar at her face but he protested, saying he didn't feel comfortable throwing anything at a woman. So you'll notice, he actually throws it at the snack bar itself.

So the guy who played "Swan" had his career almost skyrocket after his role in this movie, but shortly after "The Warriors" he starred in "Xanadu," which for a long time was widely regarded as the worst movie of all time. The actor Michael Beck once said something like "The Warriors opened a lot of doors for me in film, which Xanadu then closed."

Not many know this, but this movie and the book it was based on are both based on Anabasis, an Ancient Greek work written by Xenophon, a professional Athenian soldier and writer. The Warriors are the Ten Thousand Greek mercenaries traveling home from the Persian Empire, and Cyrus is Cyrus the Younger, who the Greeks were there to support in his attempt to overthrow his brother Artaxerxes II. Cyrus gets assassinated and Anabasis documents the Greeks’ journey toward their final battle with the Persians, and their journey home.

They re-released this movie, much more recently, where they inserted comic-book still images at key moments in the film, with a narrator pointing out the ancient Greek origins of the story. It's cringe. Breaks up some of the best scenes in the movie, for nothing. Terrible idea.

Fun fact: during filming, Thomas Waites got into an argument with the director severe enough that he was cut from the rest of the movie and killed off unceremoniously using a stunt double. If you notice, you never actually see Fox's face in the scene where he dies. Another fun fact about Thomas Waites, he played Windows in The Thing
@ryanjacobson2508
@ryanjacobson2508 4 ай бұрын
The full story is that Waites was supposed to be Mercy's love interest but during filming the director thought that the actor who played Swan had better chemistry with Mercy. So Waites's role was reduced which pisses him off. Waites admitted he handled the situation poorly by complaining a lot and fighting with the director, forcing the director to kick him off set and fire him.

1. When this came out many of the larger cities didn't run it. They were afraid it would lead to gang violence. 2. Late 70s soundtrack. 🤩 3. My favorite character is Luther. He's f-ing nuts. 4. Skates may look cool, but would suck in a fight. 5. "Warriors, come out to play" was ad lib. The director told David Patrick Kelly to come up with something menacing, and he looked back to when he was a kid and a creepy old neighbor used to torment the kids. 6. The girl with the flowers on the train at the end is Debra Winger. This was her first gig. 7. End it with Joe Walsh.

Fun fact; The guy that shot Cyrus also plays Charlie the Cleaner in the first John Wick movie. You should play The Warriors video game. It gives a deeper history of Warrior's origins,the other gangs who are their allies and their enemies. There is also a new book out by Rob Ryder called "Purple Fury: Rumbling with the Warriors". He played the purple Baseball Fury as well as the really tall guy in the overalls. He started as a stunt coordinator and ended up in the movie. The book chronicles the making of the movie and all the crazy shit that happened in the process.

Young people today have no idea how dirty, dangerous and poor the 1970’s were. This movie is a fantastic representation of the dystopian cities and it has parallels to our current situation in 2024, with crime being excused away, and everyone falling further behind. We loved this movie as teens in 1979.

The murder rate peaked in the U.S. at this time (the 70s) The murder rate in New York was 4 or 5 times higher than now (!) It's an interesting contrast in this movie: The language, the outfits, the virtual absence of guns, makes it seem a little tame, even quaint, by today's standards, but the reality was practically a war zone compared to today.

@@GK-yi4xv This is true. I see often that older people say that although it looks abnormally violent, it isn't as bad as back then. I suppose that's due to social media. We are exposed to real world violence every single day in one form or another, so it seems far more bleak.

My dad remembered when his local theater played it when he was 12 years old. There was so much actual gang violence during the screenings, the theatres screening the film set limits on how many times they played it during the week so they could keep the impact of damages brought on by real gang members to a minimal. There were, unfortunately, several murders, rapes and lootings during the said screenings. There was at least two arrests per screening at his local theatre alone. You should Check out the PS2 video game prequel/game. It is awesome on account that surviving actors reprise their roles and you learn more about the events leading up to the movie and then play out the movie itself! It rocks!

In THE CROW, he was the bad guy that got blown up in his car as it was launched into the river. In JOHN WICK, he was Charlie the Cleaner. U know, the guy John calls to remove the corpses from his house. Anyway, great reaction guys.😊👍

Yeah, 1978. During the late 70's, gang violence was quite large in society back then. I remembered people were lost in their ways due to drug addiction, brainwashing cult and public riots. This is one era I was not too fond of

"Can you dig it!" Fun Fact Theatrical movie debut of Deborah Van Valkenburgh, John Snyder, Pamela Poitier, and Iris Klein. What Script Fact: David Patrick Kelly improvised Luther's "come out to play-ay" taunt, basing it on an intimidating neighbour of his. Presidential Fan Fact: President Ronald Reagan was a fan of the film, even calling the film's lead actor, Michael Beck, to tell him he had screened it at Camp David and enjoyed it. Historical Fact: Loosely based on Xenophon's "Anabasis" story, the account of an army of Greek mercenaries who, after aligning themselves with Cyrus the Younger in the battle of Cunaxa (401 BC) in his attempt to seize the Persian throne, found themselves isolated behind Persian enemy lines. Authentic Battle Damage Fact: In one take, Michael Beck swings a bat into Deborah Van Valkenburgh's face (in the scene where he throws it at the cop). She was rushed to the hospital at 0300 local time for stitches and still has a scar. For the last shot in the film, where the vindicated Warriors and Mercy walk away along the Coney Island shoreline as the sun rises, Michael Beck and Deborah Van Valkenburgh were not told when to stop walking. Van Valkenburgh became irritated because they noticed they had reached a point where they were out of the cameras' ranges. But when they went back, they found out that the cast and crew had done this so they could bring out a huge bouquet of roses which they then presented to a surprised Van Valkenburgh.

Interesting Facts: The Turnbull AC's, the multi-racial skinhead gang went for lunch into a hamburger joint and the people thought they were the real deal, and ran out of the restaurant thinking the worst. Since the film was shot on location, that meant being on actual gang turf that the actors were told to take off that colors in between shoots otherwise they would be easily mistaken for gang members, and would put their lives at risk. It was said that Paramount Pictures had a West Coast 2nd Unit film crew flown in. When they were doing set design, someone made the mistake of tagging the gang graffiti which belonged to an "actual" gang at the time known as "Homicide, Inc.". The gang lieutenant interrupted filming demanding to know "Who Are The Warriors?" when he saw the name painted over their "burner". When the producers and director Walter Hill explained to him they were filming "The Warriors', the gangster then replied curtly that is a no-no in gang culture to write over another gangs' graffiti tag, and it can get people killed.

FUN FACT: This movie is a modern retelling of an ACTUAL EVENT IN ANCIENT HISTORY THAT WAS WAY BIGGER. Instead of one city, the journey went from what's now Iran all the way to the northwestern tip of Turkey, and took years. 10,000 Greek mercenaries in the middle of enemy territory, on the opposite side of the known world from home, walk across deserts, over mountains, passing through multiple countries full of people that wanted them dead... and 6000 of them--a staggering number, considering the distance--made it home alive.

The Baseball Furies, The bald gang is called The Turnball AC's. Luther the leader of the Rogues is a great actor. He also played Luther on the movie 48hrs. Mercy the girl in the movie also played on the TV show called Too Close For Comfort. The guy who played Fox was killed off on the train cuz he n the director Walter Hill were always arguing. If U guys notice when the Warriors were running away from The Furies, U saw Ajax running with the Cowboy n on 3 diffrent occasions Ajax slaps the Cowboy in the ass. Pay close attention to that. The soundtrack to the Furies scene I have that on my playlist.

The music, the physically of running and fighting, the colorfullness, the theatrically of their poses and their delivery, the indenuity of introducing the DJ., and crazy NY of the seventies (i wasn't born yet). I also love the fact that the movie leads you into believing it's going to be about Cyrus and the meet, and then giving you the movie about their escape after the meet.

I understand that "Warriors... Come out to play" was improvised and the Director liked it and keep it in the movie. I think that was a good call if true and if not, still a great part if it was written in. Dee Snyder did a play off of it for the song "Come out and play". Starts off with "Twister Sister...come out and play" and it gets louder and louder each time he says the words.
