For me the reason why Jess is gennerally preferred is mainly due to the chemistry between the actors, you could sense there was something real there that there wasn't with the others. Nothing to do with how the character was written but how we feel watching them together.

I have to admit that I hated that they made Liz (Jess' mother) so quirky, weird, but fun and nice later in show. She did such a horrible job with Jess, she was so negletful, Jess had major issues because of her. He ended up a great person in spite of this. Sure, they have a good relationship later, but only bc Jess was willing to do it. And even later she shows thag she's incapable of doing anything alone properly.

I hated that too. She was one of the worst mothers in the show but when we actually meet her she is a silly likable woman, wich is bad in this case, because it is not resonates with how she was portrayed by Luke and Jess.

I would have been ok with that evolution if there were more scene with Jess and more scene acknowledging how fucked up Liz was in upbriging Jess. But i hated those character and the hypocrisy of it all, and just didn't understand why they had such an important place in the serie. The idea of bringing Jess mom and giving her a redeeming arc could have been interesting if it had been treated in a different way, but i hated how they were talking about destructive and bad behavior as "quirky".

Jess was always called the “dangerous” one over Dean, but Dean was more violent than Jess was. We only ever see Jess getting into two fights, one of which Dean starts, and the other was with a classmate who was stated in show as someone not shocking to be fighting. On the other hand Dean threatened and tried to fight Tristan (remember “I’ll kill you, you idiot”) and he is the one who started the fight with Jess. He was only “dangerous” because he skipped school and didn’t follow Rory around like a pathetic puppy.
@Diana-qp2rw
@Diana-qp2rw Жыл бұрын
That’s so true! And yes, skipping school was not a good choice, but he didn’t influence Rory in a bad way by that - he never told her to quit school, on the contrary, he encouraged her to chase her dreams and even made her reconsider dropping out of Yale later on. Dean was rather bothered by how much work Rory put into school - which is forgivable, in my opinion. But the red flag about him was how needy he was overall. Constantly calling his girlfriend and showing up at her doorstep when she tells him she doesn’t have time and stuff like that isn’t cute. It always seemed weird to me how everyone in the show thought that was so cute while Jess was apparently bad for having a life that doesn’t only revolve around his girlfriend…

but the first scene that Dean and Jess interact in is a fight scene? Jess is literally having a fight with someone so Dean tries to stop them so he isn't in trouble however Jess then tries to beat Dean up. I'm not saying Dean was the greatest guy but people need to stop acting as though he is the most aggressive and abusive person when Jess also had a bit off a dangerous and violent side.
@doctorwholover1012
@doctorwholover1012 Жыл бұрын
@Ashabe ogunrinde Jess had just moved there and didn't know that Dean wouldn't take the other person's side, or was actually just trying to break up the fight instead of join in - remember you've got a traumatised kid in a new location with no friends + no stable home life in the middle of a fight when a taller local kid joins in - it's completely understandable that he swings again as a gut reaction (it's not GOOD or the CORRECT choice, but it is understandable for a person in that situation) He never starts a fight, he's just a traumatised teen who's defensive + has trust issues - any time we see him he avoids violence as an option unless he's cornered or attacked first and always chooses to argue + storm off as his default reaction (which is part of his relationship issues with Rory + with Luke - his defensive isolation after/during conflict frustrates those trying to get close to him bc it's his way of preventing himself from hurting others or being hurt by them)

I love Lorelai but she has one big thing that annoys me... The way she treats Jess. Jess was a broken child with such a traumatizing childhood that can explain his behavior as a teenager and everyone keeps on treating him like a problematic figure, no one is trying to understand him, not even Luke. And yes Rory doesn't have to understand him and can move on with her life but from the very start she acts as everything and everyone revolves around her. His father appeared for the first time in his entire life and everyone keeps on paying attention on Rory's feelings. Ofcourse leaving her without explaining was not right but what do you expect from a child whose own parents keep on abandoning him? All of the adults behaved as if Jess was a grown up with a problematic behavior but he was just a heartbroken child and Rory doesn't deserve his love. She moved on so fast to Dean as if she never stopped had feelings for him.

Yup, that really bothered me. Teenagers make mistakes all the time and do wrong things even without a traumatizing childhood. It’s insane that no one at least considered what Jess went through with his parents, but treated him like he had a totally normal childhood and family and was not still a kid. I’m glad he finally got his life together and even published a book later on. That is quite impressing considering the lack of support and understanding he had from the people around him.

I’m not a huge Logan fan but my favorite moment for him is when he tells Rory how she is one of the elite that she went to private school, is having a building named after her and she is delusional to judge that world without acknowledging her place in it. He was a very needed reality check. And he did bring out a side of her that she needed to face. From the revival it looks like mamas is still facing that shit but maybe that was the beauty of her being pregnant at the end. Life no longer could be about herself, to be a mom is to be selfless first and people tend to find themselves when they stop thinking only about themselves.

I feel like if I had to choose out of her three boyfriends, Jess was the best choice by the END of the series, but not when they dated. I honestly would have liked to see her find a new love in the revival and move on from Logan because he seemed to feed her ego and entitlement. However, since we didn’t really get any new meaningful relationship (sorry Paul🙄), I would pick Jess. I felt like he was more down to earth, but still interesting and well read. He was a good match for her personality, but he needed to do work on himself and his possible childhood trauma.

Jess's upbringing was made REALLY clear to me when he was attacked by Liz's (then) boyfriend TJ at the strip club during TJ'S bachelor party. That shit was crazy, they're in a strip club and Jess is clearly disinterested in that type of party so he has a book he's quietly reading, he doesn't even really KNOW TJ or anyone but Luke (and they aren't speaking) at the party at this point and TJ gives him shit and Jess says a Jess thing and TJ fucking attacks him! And then somehow a grown man attacking a guy just out of his teens (he may still have been in his teens then, I forget), his FUTURE STEPSON, was both their fault? It was SO weird to me to see Luke lecturing Jess on his relationship with his mother when Luke clearly knew NOTHING about that relationship. Jess doesn't trust Liz's boyfriends for just this reason and it's REALLY weird to ultimately have treated it as though Jess wasn't giving TJ enough of a chance. This coupled with the way they kept writing TJ afterward, Jess was right to be worried and experience was on his side, that guy was violent and useless and his mother was completely out of it. I can't imagine how Jess grew up based on the stuff Luke would say about Liz's boyfriends either and I wouldn't have been surprised if (even if it was never mentioned in the show) some of her boyfriends got physical with her AND Jess. Then Liz sends him away to Luke, an uncle he doesn't know somehow even though Luke's always bailing them out, and just never bothers to keep in contact with her son. Then the first day there where Jess has been sent to a virtual stranger to live in a town that sucks for him he gets a lecture from ANOTHER stranger who is also trying to relate to him as though she has ANY idea what he's been through. Not only was Lorelai the wrong messenger for a lot of this stuff, she made a lot of assumptions and prescriptions she really had no right to make, she could have approached this differently but she's Lorelai so of course she didn't. It says a lot about Lorelai's worldview still, especially when she uses that instance, where she fucked up, to dislike Jess forever. Also, Jess was really the only guy in that whole town pulling pranks? The stuff he did was teenage boy stuff they and they treated it like he was standing between the elementary and middle schools selling crack. The treatment of Jess, for me, is ultimately one of the ways that this show mishandles class. Luke making fun of Jess for having a job at Walmart is another example where you're very aware that the writers have no idea what poverty or being lower class actually looks like. Just another flaw of the show, sadly. Jess was a shithead, I totally see that, but it was weird that no one seemed to even want to try to understand Jess, even his uncle, and I can see how someone like that would only withdraw further and further into themselves and become more and more embittered as time went on as a result, especially in a tiny town where you can't go out and distract yourself. I can see why he'd want to leave, get away from a family he doesn't trust, and start over even if it meant leaving Rory (though I think the reason they ultimately did that was because they wanted to give Jess his own spinoff and no one was having it). He seemed to have been able to somewhat work through his issues with Luke and in the end understands that Luke was only trying to help but Luke also can't communicate for shit, but even in the end they glossed over the stuff with his mom so much it was really weird. The problem, ultimately, is that Gilmore Girls came out in 2000 and as a result normalizes a LOT of really toxic shit, not just when it comes to the men but when it comes to the ways the women interacted with other women. It was always SO weird that in a "girl power" show Rory only had 2 close female relationships outside of her mother. Lorelai literally had ONE female friend outside of Rory! So it's a few women and then the focus is always on their love lives with men. Men were given a lot of breaks in the show, just another consequence of 2000s writing, and it really just means it's hard for me to see Rory with any of them in 2023 without knowing if any of them grew up OK. Jess we get a better sense of because he's got those ties to Luke but, like you said, it's ultimately to the detriment of the relationship again because now he's too good for Rory.

Rory and Jess to me may be soul mates but soul mates don’t always have to be romantic. They make good friends but as a romance, nope. Season 3 was a mess and we never saw Jess take accountability for that. He love bombs her in season 4 and then after a semi-cathartic conversation with Luke, demands she run off with him. Then in Season 6, he claims to know her more than anyone. How? The Rory he knew didn’t exist. She likes the privileged lifestyle her grandparents have allowed her to have. She chose Logan over and over. I agree that the Jess in the revival seems great but again not for Rory. Maybe after the revival and they get to know each other as they are in the present, not some teen ideal of the past.

I feel that Logan and Rory made a really great fit as well, their personalities really aligned with one another. However, their relationship had many downsides too that out weighed the good, After Logan proposed to Rory and she said no, he got engaged with another woman and still continued having an affair with Rory. And this for me, showed that Rory didn’t really have much growth relationship wise because it involved a-lot of deceiving and cheating. Their relationship just didn’t have much meaning for it anymore like it did in the beginning. Jess on the other hand, he focused on himself and got his life together and became successful in his passion of being a author and so much more, and the reason I believe Jess would make a good fit for Rory is that He sees Rory for who she is despite any mistakes she made, he sees her, and you can tell that he genuinely wants her to be better and to be happy and cares for her deeply. Jess’s love for her is way different than Dean and Logan. Which is why in the end I see him being a better fit for Rory, but in the right time where she has also grown as a person. I feel he would be the one to truly make her feel seen and loved for who she is all around.

I was always team Jess since I originally watched the show when I was a kid. I liked that Jess was the most encouraging to Rory when it came to her education. Dean and Logan both definitely held her back while Jess really encouraged her to shine. Meanwhile, Logan was a huge part of why Rory left Yale. I don't think that Jess and Rory were in the right place for them to end up together in the original series but I really think they underutilized him in the revival. I feel like Jess and Rory's main problem is that they were both bad at communicating, especially when they were together as teens. It's so sad, cuz I like Jess, but failing to talk about their problems was their downfall. But also, Rory in general has shown to be a non-communicator even when she was in college and dating Logan. Like when she perceived Logan cheating on her while he thought they were on a break. He tried to communicate and went as far as stalking her apartment to finally have a conversation and address the elephant in the room, but Rory was avoidant. Even when she said she forgave him, she continued to be passive aggressive for the next episode or two. And Logan did noticed and called her out for it. That's the only way Rory spoke up to it and they could settle this resentment. At least in the Logan and Rory relationship, there was a little bit better levels of communication. Lol not that I'm a Logan fan at all really, but man, he really had to go through Rory's problem with communication.

When she said that you should feel safe telling your partner things and dating is about vulnerability it spoke to my soul 🥹 It’s so true. They were soulmates that couldn’t line up cause neither one was prepared to be what was needed in their relationship to meet half way. And yes Jess was attacked by a goose and I thought it was the cutest call back and mirror moment to when Rory was hit by a deer lol they are so similar just ships in the night missing each other

I think the reason why a lot of us like these two together, it's because of the chemistry Alexis & Milo had. I mean, they were dating at the time. When it comes to Jess & Rory, I know they weren't the perfect couple but they really cared about each other in their own way but like you said the timing was not the best for their relationship to work. Despite all the problems, I really liked we got to see the real Rory while they were dating, someone who didn't have to be perfect 24/7. Sadly, Rory became too much of a mess as the seasons went on & we can all agree Jess is way too good for Rory.

The way you have dissected this has made me want to rewatch key episodes to see things I may have missed on a casual viewing, sometimes you pick more up the 2nd time. You're absolutely right, the writers should be credited for giving him a better character arc in later seasons. Would have liked to have seen something similar for Alison and mona in later seasons of pll. I like your comment on Rory having limited options to choose from, that was spot on and probably coloured her decisions

I watched the Gilmore Girls without being told I'm supposed to care about who anyone is with. I just love the show, the characters, Stars Hollow, the storylines and find it all sweet, funny and comforting. When Jess first showed up he was exciting because Dean was Dean (I never understood him) and Jess was interesting and smart like Rory though he wasn't much of a student, and seemed like a boy a girl would actually like. He figured out a lot about Rory from the moment they met, only from seeing what's in her room and bookshelf and he must have liked what he noticed and recognized how similar they are. Even though going back to watching the show I realize he did many, many things that were wrong in general and specifically to Rory, as I initially watched episode after episode when I was younger than Rory (and similar to her in many ways), all I saw was how much he and Rory really liked each other and the two had all kinds of chemistry, barely being able to stay away from one another. The scene with Luke giving them apartment rules, telling them the door stays open and where they should sit and what's allowed and what's not was funny and interesting to me and I felt their pain. Jess crashing Paris's crashing Rory's alone time during Lorelei's spa weekend with Emily, "bringing food from Luke" was a favourite moment and amazing episode for me. So many bonds were formed and it was really clear how much everyone liked one another, with Jess claiming he doesn't care, it's only Luke who wants Rory fed, and Rory was so nervous about Dean because she did really like Jess. I liked when Jess turned back on the sprinkler at the oasis so Rory wouldn't get in trouble with Dean. That was a really good moment that showed how mature he could be and how much he really loves her. All I saw were the similarities and how much they wanted to be together because I was just watching it play out without really thinking about it in the way I might have after several viewings and hearing many opinions. Jess didn't only like how Rory looks or who she might one day be and he never cared about her family money or her "cool young mother" but he liked who she is, from their first meeting, to spending time with her "tutoring him," to yelling at her to go back to Yale. One of my favorite scenes is when he showed up at the grandparents, it was so unexpected and welcome, like when you see someone you didn't realize you miss and need. After the first time watching the series (I watched many times) I wondered how he's the only boyfriend she never had sex with and they were so into one another (I think since they were really dating at the time their real interest showed even more, but maybe then I didn't need to see that play out). I don't like Logan because I know people like Logan and I thought he was immature and not much more than an adrenaline junkie with daddy issues but I suppose if he'd grow up he'd be okay. The adult version of Jess is good, which we always knew he'd be. Dean is still boring and Logan is still cheating. Can we see the wookie or Paul?

When I watch these comparisons and judgement of Rory's boyfriends, it becomes all about how they treated HER. She was the one that messed with THEIR heads. In the end ,her true self is exposed as a very selfish , manipulative, compulsive, immoral person. I don't know why these guys want to even be in a relationship with her. She seems to get pleasure from the chase. Then strings them along. Logan can't even get her to commit. She thinks HE is the ONE? Jess told her things about how he saw her. Not an overseas correspondent. Told her she was messing up dropping out of Yale. Told her he didn't think her and Dean were compatible. Yes, maybe he was trying to win her over, but I think she started to see it too. He even suggested to her about writing her book. She seemed to pay attention to him more than the others. Maybe he DID know her better than the others. I think also he knew she would not be able to commit and he became a true friend. A lot of men and women like the challenge of sneaking around. It keeps the relationship exciting. I don't think Jess is one that does that, so in the revival,he looks at her ,wants her, but knows who she really is. When she went to Philly to see him , it was to selfishly cheat on Logan. I think that's when he decided to be in her life , but not as a lover. I don't know why he CARES at all. This makes him better than all the boyfriends she has known. The last one, Paul, is the best example of her treatment of men. Rory isn't worth the effort. It's sad, but there are people that are just like this everywhere. And yes, RORY lies, and cheats. Loralai raised her. A shining example and role model.

Can you do a video on who was the best boyfriend for Lorelei!
@maggie4028
@maggie4028 6 ай бұрын
I totally agree with everything that was said in this video! I'm team Jess in the sense that Jess is my favorite character and in that I think he and Rory were soulmates who could never quite get their timing right and if they had met back up when they were both more mature and grounded than I could really see them working out and finding a healthy and stable relationship. Still, I think Logan does often get a bad wrap and he really was a great boyfriend to Rory (he had his moments but so did every single other character in the show except Dave tbh). I think that Rory and Logan were a really great couple and though I enjoyed the revival I really disliked their affair storyline. I would much rather have seen Rory trying to find her way outside of a relationship and have Logan find his own path the way that Jess and even Dean did. I know a lot of people say that Logan is Rory's Christopher and Jess is her Luke, and I do think there is some truth in that (except I think Logan is a lot more stable and thoughtful than Chris). But the idea is there that Logan is the guy who on paper is perfect for Rory (and in many ways they are great together), but they aren't always what the other necessarily needs. Where as Jess is always there to steer Rory in the right direction, but needed time to mature and find his way before being able to be that for her and so their timing was never quite right. The moments where I think Jess truly shines as a character are the ones that focus on him and Luke and him outside a relationship. I like that they don't try to make Jess's negative attitude attractive. The moments where I gravitate (and where I think the audience is meant to gravitate) towards Jess are when he is being more himself and when he feels safe and loved and actually lets himself trust that love and those scenes are often between him and Luke. In the same way I think Rory's best moments are between her and her mom.

I genuinely just don’t like Logan’s personality 🤷🏼‍♀️😆 I love Jess because of his character arc, his creativity, the fact he continues to push through despite diversity and his upbringing. He’s figuring it out, he’s not perfect but he’s willing to grow. I felt like Logan’s character was honestly under developed so it is harder to like his character. And like you mentioned his privilege was annoying about him. No it’s not his fault but I don’t know how much he recognizes it, how he grows from it, etc. Jess seemed much more developed as a character and because of that his character grew. I don’t think they did that with Logan’s character.

It's the longing thing for me. Jess longs for Rory the whole time, when they are together and when they are not. He gets the unrequited love thing for much of the show, whereas Logan gets jealous for like, a minute and doesn't have much buildup of feeling. Then when Rory doesn't want to marry Logan because they are so young, he just bails. Logan never longed for or needed Rory the same way Jess did. Jess will always love her and long for her even if they don't end up together.

Jess and Rory are really "right person, wrong time" to me. On my first watch of Gilmore Girls I immediately loved Jess' character, Rory aside. He's not that likable on the surface like her other love interests, and there's more a slow burn there than with anyone else imo. I think Lorelei was particularly unfair when it came to Jess and I did not like how she treated him. I mean he's a teenager for God sake and was hurt and lonely, he needed love and support (thank God he got some from Luke), not relentless criticism. I think Rory dropping Dean for Jess says more about Dean than it does about Jess… I really couldn't stand Dean from the moment he got mad that Rory wasn't ready to say "I love you" and his reaction to that whole thing was a huge red flag. I love how in s3 (I think?) Jess basically tells Rory that if she doesn't want to be with him and truly means it then he will leave her alone. I really respect that when someone has the maturity to do that because it says he cane put her happiness before his.

I dropped out, but ended up getting my life together later on. The chemistry between Milo and Alexis was also unmatched IMO and I had such a huge crush on him. Unfortunately Milo had a very problematic relationship with Hayden Panettiere, dating her when he was 30 and she had just turned 18 (but likely really started dating her while she was still a minor) so I can't really look at him the same way after that.

For me, Jess was a punk, then a pretty crappy boyfriend, but in the end he was a good guy and would have been a great catch for Rory. BUT Rory did not want him. She didn't want to run off with him and leave Yale. She didn't want to cheat on Logan with him. She didn't go looking for him, he just turned up again when she was back in Stars Hollow. She followed Logan around the world. She was still in love with him at the end. If he dropped Odette permanently and showed up in Stars Hollow she would have gone right back to him. She would have walked right past Jess and back to Logan just like she did to poor Marty. Jess deserved better than being the consolation prize at the end.

I think that peoples opinions when it comes to this show regarding Rory's relationships depend on what stage of life they are in. My mom is set in her team Logan stance, and although I can't see it right now, I think it's because I like the rebellion and the "I hate everyone but you" thing he has going. As the last season wasn't written by AMP thus why Logal had that characted development, because it wasn't the direction she envision Logan and Rory to go, the revival allowed her to set the story straight on what direction the charaters follows, so assuming that Logan direction is out of character is strictly in relation on the already off the reels turn the character took in the last season, when he was turn into something the creator never envision him to be

I think a big issue with Rory and her boyfriends is they’re all doomed relationships. ASP was set on a final scene with three words mentioned and everything was directed that way when it did not always felt organic. Some of the decisions characters made, was specifically to cause conflict so Rory would end up being a single mom in the end, like her mom. So Dean became possessive and clingy, Jess became disruptive, and Logan was emotionally/physically absent in the end when he tried to keep both his fiancé and Rory. I think the reason why the revival did not work well was because ASP didn’t see that so much time had passed that cramming season 8-9 plot into a story that is set 8 years later won’t work, and the time to express those three words had passed. To get there they had to emotionally stunt Rory and Logan’s development while Jess had 8 years of development because he was not important for the plot.

Why I like Jess more than Logan is that he was always the one that has the most influence on Rory look at Yale and the book when both times her life was falling apart and why she values his opnions the most. He never took credit for both times because Lorelai never praised or thanked him for that. Jess was smart as Rory if not smarter if he can finish a book in 5 minutes and remember everything like Rory said so he could always challenge her with his brain and always win. And Paris only liked Jess of the 3 boyfriends because she could actually debate with him. Logan was part of her downfall because she became more entitled and spoiled when she got with him while Jess later on only had the best influence on her even with how little they saw each other. I felt so bad for Jess when Rory used him to get back at Logan because he really thought she wanted to try again now that he got his life together. What many people believe now that Rory's pregnant and Logan being the dad (jeej, I guess getting pregnant by your ex who's engaged to someone else) is that the story has come full circle with Logan being Christopher and Jess being Luke in Rory's life. Jess being the male best friend to Rory and caring dad to Rory's child and raise it with her or help atleast. But I'm torn off Jess and Rory being together because Jess overshadows her so much at the end of the series! He has one of the if not best character development in the show while Rory has the worst. It's ironic that Jess leaving Rory was the best option for him while the worst for Rory because with him around she would have never have left Yale in the first place. Rory wanted to impress Jess because she was very ashamed when he called her out on Yale. Because here is someone who has his life together who hasn't finished high school and will never get into college while she just dropped out of one best colleges in the world! RANT DONE

Sure, they weren't ready but I don't think it would have been better later. Most people are fantasizing about this relationship because it left open so it's exciting, what if... Dean was obviously not a good fit, but with Logan they actually challenged each other and grew together. Okay, Logan is a bit of an asshole but so is Rory.

I didn't dislike Jess as a person. I just felt he wasn't in a place where he could have a relationship. It isn't fair to either of them. He can't meet her needs, and that is negative pressure on both parties. But in the revival, I felt that Jess had grown and the roles were reversed. She wasn't in a place where she could handle a real relationship and wouldn't be able to meet his needs.

Now that I'm an adult, though, I completely agree, they're not right for each other. The way they grew when they were apart, Jess grew so much more as a person, where Rory seemed to stagnate. I didn’t like Jess at all before he got his sudden personality makeover. He was mean to everyone around him for literally no reason. The only person he wasn’t immediately rude to was Rory. And when he knew she had a boyfriend, he tried to provoke him all the time. Like realistically, when I see someone acting this way in real life, he just seems like a bad person (teenagers can be bad people too). And when he finally got her, it was almost like he didn’t care. I was a teen not that long ago and even then, this was not an acceptable behavior in my friend group. It always bugged me why this character is so loved on the internet. For me he was more like a mini villain. At least that’s what I felt while watching…I got such a bad vibe from him. I’ll never understand how he was so many people’s favorite.

I believe Jess is the best boyfriend for Rory because of the usual arguments for him (their similar taste in literature, their chemistry, how he challenges her, and sees her for who she is, faults and all), plus him coming from a middle-low class family and staying around the same class, but still elevating slightly from becoming a successful author. If Rory and adult Jess slowly got back together after that one scene in the later seasons where they kissed and Rory broke up with Logan officially, Rory wouldn't have turned into the spoiled, entitled millennial she became in the Revival.

I never really saw what she saw in him since he was always being a little aggressive, uncommunicative and when they finally did get together, all they did was make out. I preferred Logan probably because it's the most mature relationship Rory had on the show and a relationship that I can relate to more so than the others. Probably helps that I started watching the show at 23 rather than 16 for instance. I can imagine a younger more naive version of myself liking jess more but as someone who's a similar age to Rory at the end of the show, Logan makes more sense to me.

As much as I hate this scene, he wasn't mad at her for not wanting sex his life feels like it's falling apart around him (failing out of school, can't take Rory to prom, Luke probably is going to kick him out) and takes it out on her and realizes it right after. When I watched this scene as an adult, I almost cried because I do the same thing to my husband and feel bad about it right after. The difference is once I feel bad I talk about it. To be honest, that may have happened if it weren't for Dean. I don't get why people misunderstand that he's not mad at her for that. Maybe it's because I rewatched it in my 30's with more life experience. I think he should have stopped as soon as she asked, but he wasn't mad at her for that.

Honestly, I'm not sure I ever properly watched all of the later seasons, so maybe I missed a lot of Logan's development. I probably don't like Rory and Logan also because I don't like who Rory was in the later seasons at all. I guess you can argue that Logan suits her better at that point, but I care more about who suits her better when she's being the better version of herself. I always liked Jess for Rory because he grounded her in what I thought were some of her best and most authentic personality traits. He shared her intellectualism and didn't just admire her for it, but also challenged her and made her think. He brought spontaneity and excitement to her life, but I don't think he ever would have encouraged her to do something legitimately dangerous or risky legally. I think the night where they were hanging out with Paris is the highlight of what their life would look like with Jess at his best and if Rory got it together and returned to her roots and grew from there. Rather than seeing Logan as a hybrid of her other boyfriends, I think Jess was the better mix of Logan and Dean, at least his potential and where he ended up was. He was grounded, not pretentious, a hard worker, intelligent, mature, and playful. Obviously, that's describing him towards the end of the show and the revival. He definitely had his issues at the beginning of the show, but I think they were justified and it was incredibly admirable that Jess managed to pull himself out of it almost single-handedly. Luke and, to a lesser extent, Rory helped a bit, but it was largely Jess that fixed his life. Growing up the way he did, that's a really hard thing to do.

I think the one thing I hated is when Jess could not go to a school that challenged him because that was an issue with him. Everything was too easy and he was not motivated to do better. If they did this more with him, I think he would have applied himself and dropped his attitude a bit. I can never rip on that cute scene where Rory visited Jess in New York. He was so nice to her and they had a date (kind of) where he wasn’t angry or in a bad mood. This reminded me why I loved him in the first place. Because of growth, he was the misunderstood bad boy with a heart of gold. He had good intentions, but he needed more care where he can trust people again. Agreed. Once he applied himself, he grew into a better person. I feel he was always kind hearted, but his home life forced him to put his walls up. I shipped them more when he became an author and grew up a bit and was more mature. You did win me over with Logan and Rory too.

Finished a binge rewatch of the show and I have two conspiracy theories that you gotta cover, cause they are so obvious to me now. 1) Sherri was suffering from postpartum depression or psychosis and left so she didn't injure GG, Christopher abandoned her(he says it in the scene!)and traveled for his work, making Sherri dependent on him financial. She broke out and went to Paris, got on some meds and got mentally healthy again. 2) Anna(second greatest villain in the show behind Christopher, they are literally perfect for each other because they are awful) didn't tell Luke he was the father of April because SHE WAS BANGING TWO OTHER DUDES!!! at the same time as Luke. And instead of fostering a kid onto a guy who she wasn't sure he was the father just just kept the truth to herself. 3) Logan has been honest and upfront with his fiancé. Logan is alot of things but he isn't a liar, he would never cheat on the girl he was going to marry. They have an understanding...plus I bet she looked up Rory and saw she had nothing to worry about.

I think teen Jess and Rory could have worked out, but it would have taken a lot of work. He was a traumatized kid and she didn't really show him that she trusted him, despite the fact that he was always straight with her. I would have a hard time being vulnerable if I didn't feel understood. She seemed to keep trying to change him. He did need to change, but not his whole personality. Let the guy be his introverted self sometimes. We see at the party that he was upset the whole time, but she refused to leave. I will not defend his actions when he didn't stop after she asked. I can understand how he just finally snapped and yelled. He didn't know how to communicate properly. If Dean didn't then sucker punch him, maybe Jess and Rory could have talked. They both needed to communicate. I love Jess, and think he could have always done better than be with Rory. She still needs to learn how to treat people in the revival. Of course, the point of it all was to go full circle and that makes Jess her Luke.

There are a few reasons why people are obsessing about Jess and rooting for him and Rory, I think. The actors used to date in real life and from the pictures I've seen, they were a really cute couple, even talking about possibly, probably, getting married at some point. That fell apart, due to whatever reasons, but people love to hold on to couples they really liked to see together. Them dating helped them on screen. The chemistry, the looks - it was so natural. Then there is the whole soulmates/kindred spirits thing. They understand each other like no one else does and while I'm not disagreeing that Logan understood Rory too, Jess had a different sense of understanding. Then there's the "he is her Luke" thing and the way the show is portrayed. Rory is just like her mother - which I think is unfair, because Rory is definitely a different person and not like Lorelai at all. I'll be honest: I'm obsessing over Jess too, a little bit. But not because he's the right match for Rory, but for himself. Such a strong character. Such a beautiful tale. Really. When he comes to town you don't know what to expect. But he's making it very clear: He doesn't want to be there. But he's a minor, so he has no say, and he hates it. Not only because Stars Hollow is what it is, but also because, with a mom like Liz and no father figure, he had to raise and fend for himself - now he has Luke, and he isn't used to that kind of care. So there are a lot of factors at play here. And he's overwhelmed with everything. People are overstepping their boundaries right from the beginning. No one has asked him if he wants to go over to Lorelai's for the "Welcome in Stars Hollow, not everyone in this town should be committed, but if they were, this would be the reception"-dinner. The decision was made for him. For a 17yo boy, who has his own brain, just came into town, and needs to adjust. That doesn't excuse his behavior or the way he talked to Lorelai. They were both out of line. But he was right. While Lorelai and he have some similarities, Lorelai has no idea how it is to live in a big city like NYC, with no money, and a mother like Liz, who's bringing strange man at home, drunk, and possibly high more often than clear in the head to actually care for her son. She's just trying to help and I'm sure he knew that too, but that wasn't what he wanted. He wanted to be left alone! And people should have respected that. Let that kid come to terms with his new reality and don't smother him with love and care - he doesn't know how that is, he doesn't know what to do with it, it's to much for him, it's trapping him, bringing him in a position he doesn't know, and doesn't like - so he does the only thing that makes sense for him, so he can breath again, he throws punches - with words, because... you know... books (haha, the joke), and actions. Still no excuses for his behavior, but give the character a break - he's a kid fcs. Does he need therapy? Yes, like everyone else on this show. Seriously! Freud would have a field day.

Then there's the issue of him not doing the work. Not putting in an effort. It's annoying, yes. Because we all know he's not stupid. He could do well in school, even get into college, if he wanted to. But he doesn't want to. On one side there is Jess... not letting people see the good in him. Because as soon as he does, people will expect more. And he doesn't want to have to live up on that, like Rory constantly has. And she has. You can clearly see the contrast here. She is this bright shining star and when she slips, the fall is hard. To all of them. But with Jess? Yes, they are mad at him, yes they are disappointed, and Luke even blames himself, but they knew it was coming - at some point. Or should have known. And on the other side there are the people who are to easy on him. Giving him second chances over and over again. So he thinks he can pull this off... and then he's faced with the reality: It's not a fairy tale. He can't just skip school to earn money to give his girlfriend dates out of town, to go to concerts, to give her what he thinks she wants to have, and expect it to be okay. He messed this up and he knows it. And it's eating him. Because he cares. He cares about Rory, he cares about Luke - and he let them down. That's too much for him to handle too, because before there was no one he cared enough about. He didn't care if he let anyone down. But now he does and he has to figure this out. He can't. Because he never learned how. The moment in the bedroom at the party. I hate it. Because everything is wrong with it. Jess and Rory were always heavy with the physical interaction. From the get go. Is it healthy? Maybe not. But it's not all that bad. Rory probably never felt that attraction. With Jess she started to think about "it" - which was very sweet, I have to say. How she denied it only to realize that she does. And she was so shy about it. Loved her for that. Anyhow. While they were always touchy and Jess made it clear that he wanted more - he never pushed her. You could argue that he showed his disappointment when she told him that she had to go and Rory could've felt pressured, but I never saw it that way. There is nothing bad about letting people know what you want, that you know what you want, and letting your girlfriend know that you want her. Unfortunately we don't know much about their dates. How far they really were taking things. Because there has to be "more" before you know that you want to take THAT step. Jess had experience, I'm pretty sure about that. And he wouldn't have been the best option for her first time, because he wasn't safe, he wasn't stable - but still... he wasn't pushy. What they did with him in that Episode was unfair to him, to Rory, and their relationship. It somehow dumped everything down to him using her for comfort. Because that's what he's doing there. He tries to deflate, because he doesn't want to talk about his failures. He wants to feel the attraction. He wants to show her what he feels with his body, because he doesn't have the words (again: the joke!). And when she's rejecting him, he gets mad - for a moment, because it's too much in his head. I don't want to excuse his actions here, because that was just awful of him. And he knows that too... But then there is Dean, and Dean is throwing punches, and Jess takes the opportunity to blow off steam, built up tension, everything. And I really hate it. Because they needed the character to be in that place, so he goes away the way he does - for his own show, which never aired (unfair!). Amy and her husband have a soft spot for Milo, and by proxy Jess. They are close friends. So that would this to his character was surprising to me. Because it proved them all right. I never thought him and Rory would last. He was too broken for that. It had to fall apart at some point. But the way it did? I don't like it. It would've been enough to bring his father in the mix, to mess with his head. That he failed school, broke the "deal" with Luke, Jimmy coming back, just to disappear again, Luke hiding it from him. That would've been enough. With the bedroom scene they gave the impression that he would use sex as a coping mechanism when things are getting rough, and that's not someone anyone should be involved with. That just leads to taking advantage and probably abuse. I don't like that at all. Because he never was that guy to me. Yes, he was an asshole, he was moody, but he knew to keep his hands to himself. I think that had a lot to do with his upbringing. I bet he overheard Liz and one of her many boyfriends often. He saw things. And I can't imagine him doing that to anyone. Was he self destructive? Of course! But not that much. And as much as they did justice to his character - it's cheap writing, because he's introduced as this "bad boy". Then we see "huh, he's not that bad, he's just misunderstood" and that's WRONG. He isn't misunderstood. No one understands him at all. He's mistreated. Constantly. By everyone. Even by Rory. She drags him and Dean along for so long. She pushes HIM. Meeting the grandmother. She doesn't ask, she just assumed she'll get her way, like she's used to (Dean gave in everytime), and she doesn't give him a choice. And yes: She manipulated him. She misbehaved at her grandparents, how she wasn't letting go. He told her to talk about it later - not that I believe he would have, but he showed up, he tried to make it work. The black eye wasn't helping. That he was late wasn't helping either, but that wasn't on him... But in the end, all of it was his fault. Of course. Why not. Rory pushed his buttons and pushed him too far. She was so used to having Dean on a leash, that she thought she could project that over to Jess - which she should've known wouldn't work. Because he never was that person. She was just, in fact, spoiled. And him being that way - not calling, not living by a schedule - clearly helped in her relationship with Logan later on. Either way - they were both shitty in their relationship. Not communicating, due to the fear to admit that it wouldn't work between them. Not making compromises. Being to stubborn, for completely different reasons.

They weren't good for each other when they met, when they got together, when he came back for his car, the wedding of his mother, her weird "I need to find myself without searching"-phase, and her out of line attempt to get back at Logan for cheating. And in the Revival... they're still not good for each other. Because he's too good for her, and I can't see him being okay with the decisions she made throughout her life. And I hate this longing look. Maybe it's misinterpreted and he senses that something's off with her and he's just worried. But boy, do I hate this. It doesn't do him justice AGAIN. His character is so strong and has so much growth. It hurts to see that go to waste. I can see the similarities between him and Logan at some points. But to compare them is as unfair to both of them, as comparing Jess and Dean. That's just night and day on both accounts. Dean had this stable family life, which Jess never had. Logan has the stability money wise, which Jess never had. Jess has the ability to tell people off, which Dean is never comfortable to do - and if he does, he back paddles. Logan has all those expectations to live up to, which Jess doesn't have - he can do "what he wants". I've seen the Logan video already, but I usually don't pay that much attention after Rory drops out of Yale, because I really don't like her at all anymore, and I just don't feel it. She's a spoiled brat, ungrateful, and just whiny. So my memory of her and Logan... not all that good. What I remember is Logan being a spoiled brat. Yes, Mitchum is an asshole, his family is trash, and he doesn't have the emotional support a child should have. That's similar to Jess and Lorelai. But the difference is, that they did something about it. They took off and made something for themselves. Build a life, became better persons. Logan is just comfy in his life. He's entitled, he's privileged. He likes that. So he is moping and playing victim, but he's feeling good in this role. And I'm just like "Boy, take your stuff and leave! You're smart, you may struggle for a while, but you can be in that place for yourself!"... But he just doesn't. He hates his father, but as soon as there is trouble, or he needs something, he's quick to point out who he is, who his father is. The Episode with the Yale Daily News. He doesn't save the day. He uses his last name to save the day. He doesn't have to make an effort. He just has to say "Huntzberger" and everyone does what he wants them to do. That's why I don't like him. It's the same as Rory does after the dinner with his family "Don't they know I'm a Gilmore?" - ugh. And there's nothing to be proud of for both of them. They didn't work for any of that. Others did the work, they are just inheriting the money and the status. Rory's trust fund is why she can travel back and forth all the time, by the way. She isn't using the money for something meaningful, like... buying underwear fcs. 250.000 is a lot of money. If I remember correctly. And that's just it with them: They are too comfortable with falling back on the family. Because, they don't have to work for something. And I hate that. That's making Jess the better man. Because he's doing the work, he's making an effort, and he pays owed money back, as soon as he can. He becomes this caring person, despite everything that's happened to him. He's there when his mother and his nut job for a step-father are in trouble. Maybe not as much for Liz as for Luke and his sister (Doula), but he is there. He is there for Luke and listens to him when Luke and Lorelai have trouble. Jess insists! Jess! He won't leave until he knows what's going on and if there's anything he can do. He's there for Rory, giving her advice (again!), after how badly she treated him. He just becomes the better man. Something we saw in the original show. He had the potential all along. Then there is Rory. Still cheating, still running back to exes, still being a spoiled brat. Logan. The same. Lorelai. Still judgmental when it comes to Jess. Still immature. They are all in the same place. And he is not. The irony! He's with Emily, Lane and Paris my favorite. Such great characters! Sorry for the long text. Just had to get it off of my chest. And I missed a lot of points again, I'm sure. ^^

I think one of the reasons why I used to ship Jess and Rory (after rewatching it as a grown up I kind of dislike all of her relationships, admittedly hers and Logan’s only because of the revival) is because he felt more like a character than a love interest. Since he was Luke’s nephew he had storylines outside of Rory, scenes that were focused on him and his family. We actually got to know him in a context outside of Rory (not a lot but more than the others). Not that dean and Logan didn’t have any scenes without Rory (+that weren’t about her). I can’t think of any right now but I am sure they exist! But less than Jess. Jess was more developed, we actually got to know him.I liked Jess as a character. I felt for him. He is my favorite character out of the three boyfriends. Rory‘s and Logan’s relationship was way better and it made the later seasons a lot better but I was less invested in logan and his life.

I have always preferred Jess, but to be fair, I started watching the show when I was 18 and when I rewatch as an adult I can actually see his red flags for what they are now. However, I still love Jess and would love to see them end up together, and you said people have a double standard when it comes to the boyfriends and you're right - for me, it comes down to the fact that I like Jess's personality and find Logan's very grating. It's not that I think Logan is wrong for Rory (they probably deserve each other by the end) or a bad character, it's just that I don't like his personality.

I am Team Jess, but 100% agree with you. What he did at the party was him at his lowest point and it’ was disgusting. He only got better after that. And he got so much better that I think he deserves better than Rory. True, she was a stepping stone for him but she didn’t become a better person. She found her comfort zone with Logan and emotionally stayed there. So even if being with Jess meant she would become a better person, I don’t think Rory would’ve taken that risk to go back to Jess.

Personally, I don’t like Logan that much, but I agree that he’s the best person for Rory out of the 3 (minus the revival version of Logan🤢). When I was younger I really liked Jess because he was largely misunderstood. Was he a badly behaved character? Yes, at times. But a lot of characters thought the worst of him even when he wasn't in the wrong. There was potential with Jess, but the show butchered his character IMO. But the revival mini series also redeemed the character. Logan was an amalgamation of Dean and Jess and Christopher. So he was an idealistic character. I would have liked him, but I didn't like who Rory was at the time. In the end I didn't particularly like any of Rory's boyfriends. But I do think that they were all better than her.

I am team Jess all the way, but not as a boyfriend. He was a bad boyfriend. What I love in him, is how he developed to be a good mature man. He clearly have family issues ( his dad left him, his mom have a lot of crappy boyfriends and husbands so we can imagine what he can saw from those men, also his mom used marihuana and things like that she mentioned her wedding day, he was raised by the streets). He has the less stabil family from all of Rory's boyfriends. And he got scared from this stabil home, and the fact that he screwed up so he run away ( he left people before they left him, he has abandonment issues, because of his father). His relationship with Rory was just a part of his development, help him to change later. But Luke was the one who actually help him became his best version. And that version of what I really love and why he is my fav. Luke was his dad, the one he always needed

I've been watching GG for years growing up and have had so many changes in how I perceived each character. After watching it all the way through again in my late twenties I finally came around to Logan as a character, but my only issue with him still is the cockiness that makes him unlikable to me personally. I used to see it as Jess is also shown as cocky as well thru the early seasons but to me Jess's confidence came from a place of self assurance and Logan's self esteem to me came from an outward source such as financial privilege or constant praise. I've changed on Logan as a character especially in that episode that him, Rory, Lorelai and Luke stay in the summer home (that also changed my perception of Luke but that's another story) the later seasons added much more back story to him which I refused to see when I was younger. I was always enamored with Jess, the mysterious book lover that maybe dangerous but would never hurt the love interest (I blame Twilight) and that overshadowed a lot of flaws that presented in his character. To me it all comes down to personal preference honestly and that's different for everybody, I've learned to see the good in Logan as a character but still find his demeanor smug and unattractive (not physically) to me and I have seen the flaws with Jess's personality which are a definite cause to beware romantically until he grows up, learns from his behavior and makes changes for the good. Great video and great points of view and opinions as always.

Okay I know lots of people love Jess and Rory together and I get that. Tho after I rewatched the show now for a hundred of times years later, I honestly don't think they would have been a great match when they had continued their relationship from the point when they met. Jess was too troubled by then and Rory was often heartbroken and very jealous concerning him. He always just left and was so unreliable and that made her feel like crap. I know there are many sweet scenes between them and he wanted the best for her - we see this especially in that scenes when he is alone and not with Rory. But all aside nothing good he does or wants for her excuses the fact that he often behaved like an ass even to her. When I realized I had forgotten the episode when she said no to him at that party and he still tried to force himself on her, there was just no way for me to see them together anymore. If you are an unhappy teen there are still things that can't be excused afterwards and even if they are, they put lots of negative weight on top of that relationship together with the fear that this might happen again. Maybe if they broke up earlier before that incident or even didn't start anything before they were grown adults - maybe under different unknown circumstances they would have been the perfect match. They could have learned so much from each other. But the show deciced that Rory should have a similar university experience as her grandparents had. So she got closer with them and more and more part of that upper classed world. Actually for the plot I don't mind. Sometimes a story isn't just only heartwarming and you wish something else for a characater, but it is how it is. I also don't care too much for Logan. Tho within the environment they wrote her into I think she needed to have someone like Logan there - someone who got her out of her shell but also told her the facts and brought her down to earth when she did not want to view herself as part of the high society but still as the 'normal small town girl' she was no more. To show that Rory would experience a downfall of her sweet and achieving personality when she was thrown into that Richard and Emily world was a writing choice. I really don't think her outcome has much to do with neither of Logan or Jess. She could have taken a complete different road at harvard or somewhere else, she could have met a completely different bubble of people but she didn't. She decided to go to Yale and that is how the story goes. I mostly blame the fact that Rory relied to much on her grandparents money and shelter at some point. Rory had a vision for her life but everything was for a long time way too easy handed to her. Second I blame the small town people to put her since the beginning of her childhood on that ungodly high pedestal. Also Loreley was a hugh part of that problem. Just stop blaming the guys who she chose for all of her negative character traits. These relationships were only outcomes of the environment and the state of mind Rory was in at certain times of her life. It would be even sader to say that men were the main reason why Rory came out to be as she was in the end, wouldn't it be? It is a show about two women and their struggles in life. And boy you can become a shit person just on your own. I mostly ignore the last new season of Gilmore Girls when I think about all that. But after all of Rory's failures and her selfish behaviour maybe that is the story of the Gilmore Girls season we will never see: how to get back to yourself and your plans for life whilst becoming a better person. Wouldn't that be nice. :)

Totally agree with your assessment of Jess. I love him too, but also thought he was more of a right person, wrong time for Rory. Sure, Jess was unnecessarily rude at times, but I can’t forgive Luke for when he berated Jess for not wanting to walk his mother down the aisle. Jess is allowed to feel resentment and anger toward his mother and doesn’t owe her anything. She’s flighty and her “everything’s fine I’ve got my boys with me” attitude is such a strange, delusional way to live life and only, understandably, made Jess angrier.

This is good. I didn't like Jess or Logan when they were introduced to the show, but they were interesting characters and both grew a lot. I was disappointed that Rory and Logan broke up at the end of the original series.

Well Jess literally says that the timing with them is always off. That they started things incorrectly and they were on the wrong page. Jess was a very abused child and it isn't addressed at all. They're good for each other but he does the work while Rory remains selfish
