Unlike previous Verzuz recaps, Joe shared his desire to not criticize but appreciate two of Hip Hop's greatest legends (Big Daddy Kane and KRS-One) as they performed their timeless catalogue of hits (15:31). Joe explained the nostalgia he endured while viewing the Verzuz and emphasized how pivotal both emcee's are to the evolution of Hip Hop (29:50). The crew then discuss the viral clip of a young man who attempted to steal another mans car at a gas station which lead to a discussion regarding this current generation not fearing consequences (57:02). Howard University students protest due to alleged poor living conditions (1:37:21), the crew remembers Colin Powell (1:57:18), an update on the Ben Simmons saga (1:58:55) and MORE!

Going To College Was Literally Better Than The Environment That I Was Coming From. I’ll Pick College Over Staying In The Hood Any Day
@robskinnerjr
@robskinnerjr 2 жыл бұрын
You are correct! However I don't believe the conversation was center around going to college or staying in the hood. It was center around going to college and going in debt or getting a trade or a non traditional route of earning a living making money and not going into debt. You can always choose to go to college later once you really know what it is you want to do in life.Thats what I took from the convo anyway🤷🏽‍♂️. None the less, Congratulations to you Sir for getting out the hood and going to college.👏🏾

I wish more kids were in a position where they could afford a gap year of travel to experience the world before committing to college. It used to sound like such a rich person thing because it wasn’t in my reality when I was young. Ice saying how small the gap between high school and college was for him really highlights how little time we allow kids to even consider what they want to focus on.

Real talk! I went to college and a trade school. Didn't finish college because we couldn't afford it, financial aid didn't cover enough. The format of college is discouraging, it's like you're paying to go to highschool all over again. They make you take classes that have nothing to do with your major, and subjects u took in highschool. It's definitely designed to put u in debt with no guarantee u will work in your field after you graduate. I recommend trade schools as well. Learn a skill that can be used in the world and get certified and use it.

Ice , we didn’t all have the luxury as hip-hop fans to grow up in or around an actual city. As a 90s kid in the middle of nowhere we still got the MTV channel on the “big” dish and we still traded cassettes out of our briefcases. If you love something you find a way to inform yourself. But then again some of us were happy just being fans, seems like they all want to be on stage these days.

The younger generation were born with access to the internet. As a kid you didn't have multi major streaming services pushing content at you you didn't have the pressure to get through maybe 100s of new songs a day you didn't have so many sub genres within hip hop you didn't have the widened age range of listeners You didn't have multiple eras of hip hop music You didn't have people at the end of their 20 - 30 year career The landscape of music and access information has changed. It's not the 90s. Back in the day Mcdonaldl's had a burger. There was nothing to think about. Now......

Grateful for Raw, Smooth Operator, Self Destruction, The Symphony, Just a Friend, the West Indian influence in KRS’s sound, the original drive of Kane. Integrity. Drive. Heart. Bless. ☝️♥️ NOTE: The artists of yesterday should never be excluded from the greatest of all time list [even for newer and newer generations] otherwise, you can’t say of all time. Great of all time based on just what you know or experienced is flawed and negates the point of the greatest of all time list AND it’s what erases history / culture; which lessens growth. Grow. 🌱♥️

2 things y'all brought up that I always discuss when it comes college. 1. Most of our and the youth's goal is just to "get to college". So once you get there, you've already achieved that goal, so there is no redirection towards what can get you a useful degree in something you're good at and want to do in the future. 2. I tell folks only go to college for a degree that ends with a certification (you have to test to certify your skills).

@Stonecoldalston

@Cerise Medina it's still bullshit because there's just as much good music as the trash only difference is back in the day the higher quality stuff was the music bring marketed and promoted on radio TV etc more and days they only push majority of the bs to the front so it seems as if that's the majority but that's so many Dope Artists that's making just as good of music of 20 years ago but people don't care to search for Artists unless their already popular

A lot of people are not actually fans of hip hop as a culture. They are a fan of certain genre's of music..of their Era. Most don't even follow rap once they grow and start families, jobs etc. Most don't go back, but the same can be said of those that don't listen to any new stuff.

Go on a HS or college campus same thing. It's not just hip hop history young people in general just don't care what happened before them outside of headlines. People on average just don't take the time to learn unless it's spoonfed to them. even those who say they love 90s music only know the commerical hits don't listen to the actual albums.
