I'm glad to see that so many people are getting a lot out of this lesson - I did not expect it to get the response that it has so thank you all for watching and subscribing! I see a lot of people commenting that they believe the song is in the key of C# Minor and not E major. That's totally fine if you want to think of it that way, but here's my two cents... Personally I like to view it as E major for the following reasons: 1) The chords of the progression end/resolve to E major. The second time around the progression, the A major is actually an Amaj9 chord, which contains an E major triad (G#, B, E) , making the resolution to E major even stronger. 2) If you think of it as C# minor, you are more likely to improvise with the C# minor/minor pentatonic scale in mind. Which means your brain will be visualising C# root notes (target notes) all over the fretboard, resulting in you playing licks and phrases that 'sound minor' (at least that's how my brain works...). Now this obviously works well for the first chord (C#m), but for the Amaj, Amaj9 and Emaj chords, it doesn't work as well as it could if you instead visualised the E major and E major pentatonic scales, and threw in the major 7th (or 9th of C#m, however you want to view it) over the C#m chord. This is just my personal opinion so please don't take this as me TELLING you how to play :) Either way, C#m and E major are relative keys which means they both contain the same number of sharps - F#, C#, G# & D#

_Don't play the butter notes_ (Miles Davis) and _I get paid for the notes I don't play_ (B.B. King)... both of these are quotes to live by if you're a serious musician who wants to express music for art's sake rather than letting people know you like to practice scales. Let the music breath. And like Japanese art, improvisation is just as much about your use of space as it is about your note selection.
@RossCampbellGuitarist

I totally get what you're saying. However, the point of my comment was not to 'show off' my music theory knowledge (not sure if that was what you were implying), it was to help others understand how to improvise better.

I always hear that song as being in C#m, only becoming major on the last chord. Also, the feel of a note changes in relation to the chords, not only in relation to the key. As such, it's easy to hear the D# simply as a 9th. Potato, potato, perhaps, but usefull to observe.

Ross. I could really use your help. What is the term for like, microtonal note bending? When you hit multiple notes in one bend as a part of the melody. Or even just on one string but I’m quick succession. Best example would be how Derek Trucks plays.
