Directed by: Nick Hamm
Starring: Freddie Highmore, Toby Stephens, John Hurt, Catherine McCormack, Timothy Spall, & Ian McElhinney
The Journey is the gripping account of how two men from opposite sides of the political spectrum came together to change the course of history. In 2006, amidst the ongoing, decades-long conflict in Northern Ireland, representatives from the two warring factions meet for negotiations. In one corner is Ian Paisley (Timothy Spall), the deeply conservative British loyalist; in the other is Martin McGuinness (Colm Meaney), a former Irish Republican Army leader who has devoted his life to the cause of Irish reunification. Opposites in every way, the two men at first seem to have little chance of ever finding common ground. But over the course of an impromptu, detour-filled car ride through the Scottish countryside, each begins to see the other less as an enemy, and more as an individual-a breakthrough that promises to at last bring peace to the troubled region. Driven by two virtuoso central performances, The Journey is a more-relevant-than-ever reminder of how simple humanity can overcome political division. John Hurt costars.

Remember that this is a film "based on real events" and not a documentary. Everything that happens in this trailer is almost certainly fictional but perhaps what is more important is watching two implacable enemies eventually arriving at an agreement and, most improbably of all, become the Chuckle Brothers.

Timothy Spall Mr Beadle Bamford from Sweeny Todd!!!! He and Colm Meaney are GREAT ACTORS!!!! I love how they take a true story and make it into a masterpiece is something else!!!! The fact that these two came together in and out of itself as well as on a personal level was a miracle indeed!! And only those who lived through it will truly understand the intricate parts of not only the story but of their friendships ins and outs!

I haven't seen this but the cynicism in these comments is quite something. Regarding the actors, Meaney looks like McGuinness and I think Spall pulled off a good Ulster accent for an English actor. And I don't know why people are expecting a documentary. It is a film 'imagining' the journey. Not a documentary! Tell me one film based on historic events that doesn't exaggerate something. I'd like to see you critics do a better job.

My childhood memory of The Troubles - Harold Wilson sends in the British army to defend the roman catholic minority that welcomes them with tea and buns, Bloody Sunday - no more tea and buns. The late evening news, past my bedtime, but I can hear it in my bedroom and learn that a squadey plugged a Feinian grandma for beating the melody of a traditional Irish tune on a dustbin lid and killed her. The tune was inspiring a protest. At the same time IRA launch a bombing campaign - well, that's why, I thought. What did I learn? As the British Army would be the first to admit, it is unwise to call upon any regiment to police anything, that's not what they are for. Never place your confidence in a side that always wins but remains in conflict.

This film is fiction ; a dangerous fiction. The sub text of this movie is that if Britain left the Irish alone. both sides would find common ground. This is simplistic and an injury to its complex history. Both of these men had blood on their hands. and their respective gospels of hate inflicted terrible injury to Ireland. The real heroes of Northern Ireland are John Hume, Seamus Mallon and John Alterdice. Sadly they are rarely mentioned but History will remember them.

Nothing to do with reality. Absolute rubbish. It's like a cartoon. It's embarrassing. It's a shame that talented actors were prepared to take the money and participate in this. For anyone, and particularly any American citizens, who think that this film might show what actually happened: please don't be fooled. I suggest that you travel to the North of Ireland and talk to real people in Derry, Armagh and Belfast etc to learn about what actually happened - to learn from the people who lived through the war and were involved in the 'Peace process' and the Good Friday Agreement - and to learn about the history of Britain in Ireland from when England and the Anglo / Normans first invaded Ireland 800 years ago - and to learn what has changed and what has not.

An absolute insult to those who worked to bring peace to the north of Ireland. If the movie makers had spent more time on a script that remotely reflected what actually happened, and less time on trying to make Meaney and Spall look and sound like McGuinness and Paisley, it might have worth looking at. There is quite an astonishing story to be told here, but this film doesn't tell it. Quite possibly the most awful movie I have ever seen.

But what really happened doesn't matter. Ben Affleck's movie Argo did the same thing. But no one's going to go see a movie about the Canadian Ambassador who set the entire plan in motion. It wouldn't have done nearly as well as it did had they not downplayed the role of the Canadian Ambassador.

The Boston Marathon bombing was local news for me. None of the people they cast to play the real people involved looked and sounded completely like them; in fact, the guy who played the Boston Police superintendent was way hunkier than the real guy. Deal with it.
