The Preacher and the Bear by The Jubalaires (Well ya give me that) Old time re-li-li-ligion brother that-a, Old time re-li-li-ligion (Why don’t ya give me that-a) brother that-a, Old time re-li-li-ligion brother that’s-a good en-enough for me, My lord it’s that-a old time re-li-li-ligion brother that-a, Old time re-li-li-ligion (Why don’t ya give me that-a) brother that-a, Old time re-li-li-ligion brother that’s-a good en-enough for me, Yes just come on brothers if ya want you to hear, A story about that preacher and the bear, Gather ‘round boys I don’t want ya to miss, None of this here story ‘cuz it goes like this, A preacher, He went out, To huntin’, It was on one Sunday morning, Though he was one Christian young man but he took his gun along, Well the first thing he shot was a bunch of fine quails, And he shot him a nice fat hare, Then through the woods on his way back home he met a great big grizzly bear, Then the reverend fell down upon his knees, He sent up a great long prayer, Whilst he cast one eye to the heaven on high but kept the other eye on the bear, He said the Lord delivered Daniel from the lion’s den, Jonah from the belly of the whale, The three Hebrew boys from the fiery furnace, Say the Good Book do declare, Now look here Lord if ya don’t help me, Don’t ya go to helpin’ that bear, (He needed that) Old time re-li-li-ligion he needed that-a, Old time re-li-li-ligion (he needed) he needed that-a, Old time re-li-li-ligion brother that’s-a good en-enough for me, My lord it’s that-a old time re-li-li-ligion brother that-a, Old time re-li-li-ligion (Why don’t ya give me that-a) brother that-a, Old time re-li-li-ligion brother it’s-a good en-enough for me, Yes then the bear walked out in the middle of the road, Up to the reverend walks he, That reverend layed his religion down, He climbed up a tall pine tree, Yes he climbed way up to the top of that tree and climbed out on a limb, Whilst the bear sits down so aimlessly, And licked his mouth at him, Around about three o’clock the old limb broke, Reverend came tumbling down, Boy he grabbed his knife he cut the bear ten times, Before he struck the ground, (He needed some) Old time re-li-li-ligion he needed some, Old time re-li-li-ligion (he needed some) he needed some-a, Old time re-li-li-ligion brother it’s-a good en-enough for me, My lord it’s that the old time re-li-li-ligion brother that-a, Old time re-li-li-ligion (Why don’t ya give me that-a) brother that-a, Old time re-li-li-ligion brother it’s-a good en-enough for me, Yes then the bear reached out to give the reverend a hug like you would hug a long lost friend, But ol’ reverend put on that disappearin’ act he went splittin’ through the wind, Old reverend went to running like an old hound dog trying to overtake a hare, He went to home went to bed and took six naps, Before his shadow got there, (He had that) Old time re-li-li-ligion he had that, Old time re-li-li-ligion (he had that) he had that, Old time re-li-li-ligion brother it’s-a good en-enough for me, My lord it’s that-a old time re-li-li-ligion brother that-a, Old time re-li-li-ligion (Why don’t ya give me that-a) brother that-a, Old time re-li-li-ligion brother it’s-a good en-enough for me (seems brother the preacher made a touchdown) I couldn't find the lyrics to the Jubalaires version ANYWHERE, so I listened as best I could, I looked up and took whatever I could find, and typed it myself, so here it is. One love. Also, shoutout to the people who have commented on my comment with recommendations and possible corrections because I’ve made a lot of fixes to it thanks to that.

The Jubalaires are the missing link to hip-hop/rap history. They were 30/40 years ahead of their time and they basically STARTED a form of music that wasn't further developed until decades later. Insane. Glad youtube recommended this lost piece of rap history to me. It was a great rabbit hole, i hope i can find more music similar to this from the same time period, or maybe even predating this.

To all the naysayers- this is definitely rap. Not to get technical, but the two elements of rap that make it unique are the rapping itself and the background sample. The background singers sing a very simple repeated harmony line that sound exactly like a sample, and the lead guy is certainly not singing. He is rapping. So yeah, this is rap.

@@meginna8354 This is definitely apart of Hip-hop Culture rather you like It or not This is Black American Culture rapping in 4 bar increments same rhythmic cadence and flow of Hip-hop from the 1970s. Get lost.

@@James-lu4hb No it isn't, you're pulling that from your ass. This is just a ballad and it's made by a white dude. When you say "Hip Hop in the 70s" there was no hip hop in the 70s, Rappers Delight came out in 79 and is basically a cover of this, so that's all you're talking about?

I stumbled upon this and I *love* it!!! It is such a charming song, and very smoothly, and gleefully performed. How wonderful to have this talent in your family 'dropper!3'! It was very cool to see Abe Lincoln's photo in the background...
