The Judge| Lester Hayes Should be in the HALL OF FAME?
Today, we will dive into the fascinating story of Lester Hayes, recognized by many as one of the greatest cornerbacks of all time. Hayes was a three-time All-Pro and a five-time Pro Bowl selection, but his NFL career, which ended in 1986, is marked by a controversy that might have prevented his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame: the use of Stickum.
Lester Hayes became known as the "Stickum King" for using this adhesive substance to improve his grip on the ball. Although other players also used Stickum, Hayes is often singled out and criticized for it. I'm a Raiders fan and Fred Biltetnikoff made the HOF despite heavy use of stickum. Lester definately belongs on the Hall!

Steeler fan also, couldn't agree more. Jack Tatum needs to go in together. Unfortunately both are gone now but I remember Tatum playing against my Steelers during the 70s and Hayes in the 80s. Long overdue.

Deion Sanders was a better corner, but for his time, Lester was one of the top 3 corners (Haynes, Ronnie Lott, and himself) in the league.

He's not in the HOF because he's a Raider , nothing else , this is still blowback from the Davis/ Rozelle fued , guaranteed. The NFL establishment has been hosing qualified Raider HOF candidates for decades. Hayes is just another example of an overqualified candidate that's getting "stiffed" because he was a Raider and a winner Raider to boot , sad

I’ve been a high school DC/DB/LB coach for 26 seasons and watched much film of him and he’s one of the best CBs in football history. Yes, he used stickum but that was the era and receivers, including his teammate, used it. He began as on offensive tackle in Pop Warner! Then he evolved to DE, then OLB, then Safety and finally to the Island.

First it was Cliff Branch, now it's Lester Hayes. Two superstars fully deserving enshrinement in the HOF who are taking longer than they should to get in. Stickum was legal. Lester still made Pro-Bowls without it. No question he's deserving.

Lots of players wait a long time to get in. Randy Gradishar was a 5-time All-Pro (Lester Hayes only 2x) and waited 41 years to get in. Chuck Howley was also 5x AP and waited 50 years. Cliff Harris was a 3x AP and 6x PB and waited 41 years. Alex Karras, Robert Brazile, Curley Culp, Fred Dean and Claude Humphrey were all great defenders wo took 30-40 years to get inducted.

Of course he should be in the Hall. It was not illegal, it was a common practice and nobody tried to hide it. He is the best CB ever, could shut down the run as well as the pass.

Wrong he knew it was banned but he was always protected by the league like farve. The NFL is evil and a plantation for blacks and whites. The players of the 50s-90-s where traeted like animals while the league grew rich. I hope the direct tv lawsuit sticks.

I played Football for WHEATLEY with Lester in 1971 in Houston, the Hardest I was ever hit in my Football days was by him in Practice . He was a man among boys in High School he was that good !

Cowboys fan here. This is another instance of a truly all-time great player who you thought was signed and sealed into the HOF ages ago, only to find he's not even in! Stickum can NOT be a reason to deny him his place, because 1) he was still a HOF-caliber player even after the league banned the use of stickum, and 2) players today wear gloves that do pretty much the same thing, and nobody says a word about it.

I have been saying this for over 30 + years. Lester Hayes is a first Ballot Hall of Famer 2× Superbowl Champion DPOY, and Held the record for the most Interceptions in a season for the longest. Discrimination is real. Fred Biletnikoff used just as much stickum, and he's in. Wow!

Lester hayes is the definition of old school football. Filthy uniform-stickum from head to toe, Kangaroo Cleats, greasy Jerri Curl, lineman facemask, etc. Love it. I miss those days.

His '80 season was the best season ever by a CB. 18 picks that season including playoffs, with 4 INTs wiped out by defensive penalties. Dominated for years after stickum, including '83 with Haynes, the best CB duo ever.

I remember watching him on Monday Night Football. In one Oakland game I remember seeing him hunkered over a bucket of “stick-um” just slathering it on his hands and forearms. But his greatness was more than stick-um.

Hayes was one of the best linebackers to play cornerback. He definitely belong in the HOF. The only Raider jersey i own. Hayes is the reason the NFL uses gloves

I'm 50 - a life long Patriots fan from Worcester Mass. And when I was a kid in the school yard I pretended to either be Lester Hayes or Mike Haynes :) I was only 9 when Haynes left New England for the Raiders. So I mainly remember him as a Raider. Haynes was just an amazing football player - and when you see him when he was young running back kick returns etc.. Between those 2 there has never been a tandem like Hayes and Haynes. The 83 Redskins were setting records all year for scoring and those 2 shut the fun bunch down all day. Smothered them. And Lester could cover - not cause of stick em but cause he could lock down cover

Stickum wasn't a banned substance. A lot of players used it including receivers. Stickum aside, Lester Hayes and Mike Haynes were the BEST shutdown corners in the NFL while they played together. Lester Hayes belongs in the NFL Hall Of Fame.

You ever heard of the Expo Facto Law? When Lester used stickum, it was NOT against the rule then, so you can NOT hold it against him, just like the Head slap and Horse Collar tackle was once legal. I am not a Raiders fan, but you have to give credit when it is merited. Put Lester in the Hall of Fame!

You can't say that Hayes has equal qualifications to Mike Haynes. Haynes played more years (14>10), had more INTs (46>39) and most important has more All-Pro selections (8>2). Most great corners and an awesome tandem for four years with the Raiders.
