Starting strength and barbell medicine are excellent organizations. The same can be said for JTS. I think they have slightly different focus populations and obviously their methods differ. However, I think they have more in common then they realize. With that being said, they should hold a debate. Rip and staff vs JTS. The kicker is Mike Tusecher (RTS) mediates .

Its interesting that all of the arguments presented for low bar in weightlifting was as a means to increase strength if the weightlifter is struggling to keep the squat moving up. But would SS consider a high bar squat for some quad development if someone was struggling to keep their squat going up?
@williams7787
@williams7787 6 жыл бұрын
I think the 'hips back' confusion comes from too many people reading both Starting Strength and the Stronglifts website; or they might only read the Stronglifts guide thinking that it's the same as SS. In the Stronglifts how to squat guide it is said multiple times to sit your hips back. So when people sit back in their squat they think they're doing it SS style when they're actually not. And keep in mind that stronglifts is quite popular so it's highly likely that this is where the confusion comes from.

@Chaitan Reddy " Rippetoe is an idiot that hasn't coached anyone that's worth talking about" Does anyone really think the world class mathematician that lectures to Phd candidates is necessarily the guy you want teaching freshman algebra? Then why would anyone think that a guy who is working with genetically gifted competitors in their prime, that have both the motivation and time to structure their entire life around training, is the same guy you want coaching middle aged soccer moms and busy professionals? If you read the book you would also know he give full props to Star. Rip is not a guy I would wanna hang out with, but Starting Strength has made thousands of people stronger, including me. That’s the only qualification he needs. What have you got to show us?

I just got over SEVERE tendinitis from my patellar tendon in two weeks. For your squats you can do the same amount of volume with the same weights, just do more sets with less reps. Also if you can compress right under your knee caps during the movement it will help with the pain. Also I did high rep leg extensions with low-moderate weight for high reps(2 sets of 20 or so) only on squat days along with foam rolling only on squat days. Also during those two weeks I substituted one of my squat days a week for another deadlift day. This along with during my daily activities trying to use my quads to the point of feeling the tendinitis without it hurting made it go away very quickly

I do have a burning question to ask between these JTS and SS. How to squat. What's crazy is that you have strong squatters on both sides but yet they both squat a bit differently. @Chaitan Reddy Everyone knows where it came from. Rippetoe did use Starrs program to a degree. He was a Starr disciple himself. He changed it to help beginners gain general strength. And for this. It works. The continual loading every session takes advantage of newbie gains using primarily the main lifts. I do not understand why people hate on this program. It works. You use it till you reach a point of diminishing return and you move on at which point you should have a decent strength base and understanding of the main lifts. You then switch your programming and lift selections for specific goals. It's not lifetime program.
@rickrodriguez2005
@rickrodriguez2005 4 жыл бұрын
@Chaitan Reddy I can tell you as someone who owns has read and followed the program that it does include pull ups/chin ups tho not weighted. Though I dont know any complete novices that have never lifted that would require additional weight for those particular movements. Hell many cant even lift body weight at first. Also core stability can sufficiently be achieved through proper bracing during the execution of these movements for complete NOVICES which again is who the program is geared towards. Those of us who now need additional accessory work and added weight for continued progress in what are traditionally body weight exercises are no longer novices do not need this program. So to judge the program based on that is unfair.
@rickrodriguez2005
@rickrodriguez2005 4 жыл бұрын
@Chaitan Reddy They wouldn't would they. That would be bad business for them. Also most beginner strength programs? Such as? And what studies pray tell? Let's just site studies and programs without identifying them. You know studies show that most people who reference studies and then do not site those specific studies are blowing smoke. Also there are 4 major movements in the Starting Strength method along with accompanying movements. Again as I see you have never read the actual program I'm not sure why you're so against it.

Anyone with a significant leg length discrepancy who lifts wouldn't knock Starting Strength like a lot of the people in the comments do. No one else is actually putting the necessary information out there for real people who are flawed etc. No where else I went to was able to point me in the right direction. I can't tell you how many people I've asked- "I don't understand, I'm all twisted up, why is my body like this?" Go over to SS, and right away- "You probably have a leg length discrepancy. If so, you'll have to start shimming." If only I would have had access to them 15 years ago. So much wasted time.

Speaking for myself, the issue is that when Ripp talks about SS it is dogma which you may not deviate from under any circumstances. Baraki and Feigenbaum are more reasonable. And thing about Chad's way of teaching how to squat- if the lifter has long ass femurs the squat will happen to look like a "SS squat" it is just more emphasized through cueing to keep knees forward and use quads

I have awful proportions for squatting and weightlifting. I'm long limbed 6'3. I figured out how to squat high bar, and weightlifting is my favourite thing to do.

Starting Strength novice workouts are fantastic. I've used it. Simple. Effective. No messy programming to keep track of. Gets you strong in no time. IT WORKS. The Texas Method however is BORING. 5/3/1 FTW.

Re Dolgea's snatch... The standing up part of the snatch should never be the hard part. And if it's the video I'm thinking of that SS shows, he has to chase that lift forward a bit, so he's not in balance, that's why he's leaning. And look at the angle between his arms and his back, if you have that kind of shoulder Mobility with 205 kilos over your head, go for it. But you're probably being more upright then that.
@BarbellMedicine
@BarbellMedicine 6 жыл бұрын
I agree that the recovery is typically not limited by absolute strength. However, at challenging weights the mechanics of the lift will be those that produce the most force. Dolega's 202.5 (not 205) shows "hip drive" during the recovery portion, as do all of his snatches. I imagine this is magnified visually due to his anthropometry, but virtually all limit snatches show the same mechanics. He also only steps forward about ~1/2 step, so I'm not really sure what video you're speaking of or what your point is.
@amielmatt
@amielmatt 6 жыл бұрын
Dude you're talking nonsense. Why on earth would you lean over when recovering a snatch? You remove quads from the lift and overly stress the low back. The hips are involved even in the ATG olympic squat with vertical torso out of the whole. Emphasising the lean forward is weird. You're trying to turn all lifts into a dead lift.
@jordankroell
@jordankroell 6 жыл бұрын
"However, at challenging weights the mechanics of the lift will be those that produce the most force." Even with challenging weights in the snatch, there still really isn't a need for the legs or hips to produce the "most force" like in a back squat. The weights will usually only represent a relatively light percentage of the lifters back or even FRONT squat (especially at elite levels) so this claim that "the mechanics are dictated by the fact that they're limit snatches" really doesn't make any sense. Leave the weightlifting to the weightlifters and get back to selling more SS books to poor unfortunate people who don't know any better.

Well, you can't say that it doesn't work for Louie since he has a lot of records. The thing is that geared powerlifting is different, the mechanics of the movements change once you have a suit that modifies the excercise, so the trainning can't be the same as a regular squat, hence the emphasis on box squats and good mornings for example.
