Great to hear its going to be useful for you. For panel detailing I've been finding it such a time saver but I imagine it does depend on a person's uses for it. I do love that the creator put in a mode suitable for 3D printing.

Great addition and can tell you love it. 4:26 it looks like the inner and outer bevel are very different thicknesses though and looks a lot less like an industrial panel
@ArtisansofVaul
@ArtisansofVaul Жыл бұрын
I think that's a bit to do with how the addon functions, it's one of the reasons I like the 3D version as I can fiddle with the bevels on both a bit. I doubt it would ever be totally perfect however without doing it manually and taking a lot of time over it, so it's a bit of a trade off.

It looks cool!! How well does it handle cutting panels into curved surfaces?
@ArtisansofVaul
@ArtisansofVaul Жыл бұрын
It depends how extreme the curve is. Generally I've found it similar to the inset feature on hardops works; generally pretty good but if the mesh is quite complex/tight it has issues.
@WeyounLP
@WeyounLP Жыл бұрын
this looks cool, but how well does it work with organic shapes? Can it create nice panels on like curved surfaces, and does it still work well with high poly models? For example, picture panel lining on a barrel of maybe a gun or something
@ArtisansofVaul
@ArtisansofVaul Жыл бұрын
Good question. I've used it on a subdivided mesh on an aircraft wing and it worked fine (though I had applied the sub D at that point). So far my view of it seems to be if the Inset function from HardOps would work this generally will too, I imagine it uses a lot of the same functions. So as that has issues with very complex mesh I imagine this might be similar.

Nice idea. I say that because I had the same thought yesterday and did some playing. This works perfectly well with Face Extract from Hard Ops allowing you to do just that! I've got a video on that here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/obqWZbeCmMCogok.html

I have been looking for a panel line tool for ages. However not sure this will do the trick. I model a lot of aircraft. Bodies and wings are very complex and rounded shapes. Will this let me do a constant depth from the surface on a non flat complex body?
@ArtisansofVaul
@ArtisansofVaul Жыл бұрын
Good question. I have played with the add on on some round shapes and how well it works does seem to vary (generally a combination of how deep you want the panel lines and the complexity of the mesh). I will say that I think even if the 3D printing option didnt work youd find the 2D option useful and then you could add a version of the wing in the centre to act as the depth. Its not perfect but could still save a lot of time. I would suggest the best thing to do would be to contact Gabe. He's a really nice guy and its been fantastic chatting to him to talk through what I think would be useful for the tool to me and I don't doubt he would be interested in hearing from someone who has a use that I think other people would be interested in. Just out of curiosity I just did a really quick test on some wing shapes.... Not sure if this is close to what you're after but thought it might help: drive.google.com/file/d/1swKKzQOBHGoHOXdTnBN7QeDGGd9PRXKj/view?usp=sharing

This look great, but will this work also on curved surfaces (let´s think of i.e. WH40k Eldar vehicles) ?
@ArtisansofVaul
@ArtisansofVaul Жыл бұрын
So I've had some mixed success on curved surfaces. It's similar to Boxcutters inset function where if the mesh is very complex it will have issues. But that also seems to be a function of how deep the panel line is.
@stefanp6480
@stefanp6480 Жыл бұрын
@@ArtisansofVaul Thank for testing this out. My current workflow is to select all edges along the desired panel line, bevel it to get some faces and finally giving it depth with "Edge extrude along faces". This is actually quite tedious and will only work good if the model is still low-poly. So this plugin will be an improvement for sure

I just found some time to play around with this great new gimick. I found it works almost perfectly on curved objects, but like with any other tool in blender you have to find a good balance on how much geometry (vertices) is really needed, that all objects are manifold etc. (As with any tool in Blender, so it´s not JustPanels to blame here). When using "Make Panel (3d printable)" it seems the unit for "Gap In" / "Gap Out" / "Panel depth" is not millimeters but something else (I made sure everything is on scale 1/1/1 at the beginning). If you know how to get this to millimeters or what unit it actually represents, please let me know. I also encountered a bug if you make more than one panel on one object, the parameters within "JP_3DPPANEL.000" seem also to hold parameters for JP_3DPPANEL.001 etc. (You will get multiple instances of i.e. "Gap In" / "Gap Out" / "Panel depth" etc. You can see it in your video at 9:30 for "Panel depth", too). But overall, yes, I love it !

@@stefanp6480 👍All very good points. I think you will enjoy the video next week (or tonight on the Patreon) which looks at some more fun you can do with this. Id suggest messaging the designer on Blender Marketplace. He's a really nice guy and Im sure it would be good for him to know. I wonder if the scale issue is something to do with it being in Blender Units, not mm (Id have to experiment with that to have a look).
