Wow. Amazing. Just working on a kind of robot thingy and was was looking for something on creating panel lines. Since I have no ideas where I want my lines to go, the non-destructive aspect is a god send. Thank you!

with plane its ok but how to do this with cubes? solidify destroy geo
@Ambaryerno
@Ambaryerno Жыл бұрын
I've tried this, and while it works on one object on the model, it has no effect at all when I try it on another. Also, on the part that DOES work I have to apply a Bevel modifier after the Solidify.
@Gelonyrum
@Gelonyrum 3 жыл бұрын
Just add Solidify modifier to boolean object and you'll get perfect procedural panels without messing with any geometry.
@PonteRyuurui
@PonteRyuurui 3 жыл бұрын
you ll need to fix shading by moving them about, also slice modif creates secondary mesh

You only need to be careful not to end your panel on a kink in the base mesh as that will lead to overlapping geo. That is, the edges you mark as sharp actually need to have 180° angles (as in your video).
@PonteRyuurui
@PonteRyuurui 3 жыл бұрын
not sure i follow, 2 edges at 180 would be a straight edge mate
@LordoftheFleas
@LordoftheFleas 3 жыл бұрын
@@PonteRyuurui I mean the angle between the two faces adjacent to the edge. If this angle is different from 180°, there will be a kink in your edge, i.e. the edge will be visible in flat shading mode. And, if you split this edge and apply solidification, the geo will overlap ( at least if you set the offset to 0 in the solidify modifier). But as I said, in your example there is no problem; after all, you only marked edges as sharp that you had drawn with the knife tool. Try marking all edges as sharp, turn up the solidification, and see what happens.
@PonteRyuurui
@PonteRyuurui 3 жыл бұрын
@@LordoftheFleas well, fortunately we dont run flat shading with subd, but if you add any lops, thi8ng will start looking ugly, shame we can t use vert groups with subd
@LordoftheFleas
@LordoftheFleas 3 жыл бұрын
@@PonteRyuurui It has nothing to do with the shading: Here's an example of what I am talking about: imgur.com/a/wxvm8bb The only difference in the right model are the additional sharp edges

I really like how simple that is. When applied what will this do to the geo? If it was applied to a solid object would it remain manifold? I ask because I used Blender for 3D printing design and so far all the easy panel lining makes it unsuitable for 3D printing as it makes unconnected parts. Any suggestions?
@PonteRyuurui
@PonteRyuurui 3 жыл бұрын
well if you apply edge split it will split the edges physically
@neilcollins7371
@neilcollins7371 3 жыл бұрын
@@PonteRyuurui I wonder if after everything is applied there is a quick way to add the depth to the panel line and reattach the edges (maybe bridging edge loops) to keep the panel line and make it manifold for printing. Definetly worth the time for me to try out and great video.

It doesn't work well with complex objects like fighter jets, don't know why the edge split fuc*s up the entire mesh 🤔

@@christos-marioseftichidis4139 No it isn't. Some people take proper courses to learn these things aside from just playing with stuff to find out what it does. Believe it or not, some people do not use the method of watching 5000 KZfaq tutorials to learn a skill.
