"GM" Ken West teaches Grandmaster Ben Finegold a thing or two about puzzles. Strike that... reverse it. 2017.06.18

You know, I've been meaning to say this. I don't learn much from Finegold's lectures. At the end of each video I look at my notes I've written down and all it says is: "Checkmate means you win" "Usually you don't want to loose your bishop because then you don't have it" "Loosing your queen is bad" "If you can take a piece for free, take it" "Sicilian defense is good, but the best sicilian is sicilian pizza" "If you see mate in one, play it" "c4 is explosive" "Knife f5" "I'm terrible"

Ken West is one of the big names in chess organization of St. Louis, he writes and organizes does newsletters, in other words he is one of those kind souls that does everything they can do to keep chess running in the local area. But if he was good at chess he would just play instead of doing all this other stuff. I looked up his USCF chess rating he's floored at 1200.

@TheClassicWorld6 жыл бұрын
Of course, the English were the best in the world at one point (somewhere between the French and Paul). Also, we have a few British GMs, but, I guess we just don't play Chess, which is a shame, but we win at everything else so I don't lose any sleep over it. Man, the truth hurts.

At 15:00 wouldn't King c5 still work? After king c7 white king can go to B5 with the threat of going to A6 and there is no way to stop this, leading to a faster mate.
@filipmilinkovic50816 жыл бұрын
No, because by the time white king gets to a7 black will already queen and then it's just draw

Actually, the last puzzle, seem to me that even if it white to move when the king is at a2, Bc3 should be sufficiant. After Rf2+ you can play Kb3 and when hte checks comes you can slowly inch you king down to a/b8 where you can defend the check with the rook.
@dr.bluesfield36293 жыл бұрын
only that it's going to be stalemate, mate
@perkalov3 жыл бұрын
@@dr.bluesfield3629 No it wont, since you've moved your rook with check. But I can see some other flaws with my plan since the king cant leave the bishop unguarded (so we cant move the king to a/b8), so it wont work. It might possibly work with Be5, but unlikely. Need an engine to check it.

It hurted my brain having to calculate that pawn ending. the kamksy one I solved in 1 second because I'm not that good. Didn't attempt the 2nd puzzle because you didn't say pause the video and the answer got shouted out before I could solve it. That last puzzle was hard, I missed the solution on that one. How can a puzzle with only 3 pieces be difficult? I think I accidentally exercised my brain on a Ben Finegold video.
@thedrakensangtank6 жыл бұрын
What I like to do when solving a puzzle is looking for my opponents ideas. Usually it just gives me an idea of how urgent the position is, but sometimes it leads directly to the answer, especially in situations where you're material up.

Like what tha hell! [8:56], Ben says that those positions are normally hard for grand masters. But I believe I clearly solved that puzzle with 1. Kb3. White has 2 connected pass pawns so it's just a matter of stopping black's flank pawns from queening (successfully). Initial calculation shows that king cannot chase down the two black pawns. But from my calculations, black is not able to queen because white queens first with check. A: 1. Kb3 e4 2. Kc4 e3 3. Kd3; White stops both pawns and eventually queens. B: 1. Kb3 e4 2. Kc4 a5 3. Kb5 e3 4. Kb6 e2 5. c7#; C: 1. Kb3 e4 2. Kc4 a5 3. Kb5 Kc7 4. Ka6 a4 5. Ka7; Queens and stop both pawns. D: 1. Kb3 e4 2. Kc4 a5 3. Kb5 Kc7 4. Ka6 e3 5. Ka7 e2 6. b8=Q+; Then take black pawns. E: 1. Kb3 e4 2. Kc4 a6 3. Kd4 ; White stops both pawns and eventually queens. F: 1. Kb3 a6; Lines very similar to D & E. G: 1. Kb3 a5; Lines similar enough to D. H: 1. Kb3 Kc7 2. Kc4 a5; Lines very similar to D. I: 1. Kb3 Kc7 2. Kc4 a6 3. Kd5 a5 4. Kxe5; Then hunt down the a pawn. J: 1. Kb3 Kc7 2. Kc4 e4; Same as E. All of this was done by head but I couldn't be missing anything. Only candidates moves for black are 1... e4, 1... Kc7, 1... a5, 1... a6; and I just have to calculate around two connected passers that keep the black king honest, and two dangerous black pawns.
@dmaster20ify6 жыл бұрын
Oh! He was just joking and actually implemented a couple "lies".
@dmaster20ify6 жыл бұрын
Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck!!!! My calculation abilities are horrible. I never bothered to analyse Ka7 for black to counter white reaching a6 and b6. White still wins but what if he didn't.
