So true, it’s better to hike chilly than be wet!

Couldn’t agree more! People I work & hike with look at me like I’m crazy because I wear minimal clothing when it’s cold (as long as I’m moving)

Starting any outdoor activity in cooler or cold weather, start out feeling a bit cool and as you start moving your body will generate heat to keep you warm. Pay attention to that, as in if you feel you are starting to perspire (sweat) it's time to adjust your layers. Once you are wet or damp it is going to take a lot to warm you up.

"Be bold, hike cold!" I tell myself that every time I start out and am shivering shouldering my pack. When you stop moving, THEN is the time to pull out the hoodie or puffy jacket. I love making coffee or cocoa - because taking off that puffy jacket to get back on the trail really, really sucks and having a belly full of warmth helps. Plus, my cancer meds give me hot flashes and being hot-cold-hot-cold is hard to manage. I'm still working on that aspect.

Recently bought the OV windbreaker. At first I wasn’t sure how to fit it into the system. I still had too many layers underneath it at times and/or allowed it to become a sauna walking up hills. Generally though you have to be proactive about releasing the heat and retaining heat at the right times which takes a little experience. I still sort of wish it had large pit zips but just opening the front zip is definitely a good transition time before committing to stop walking and removing it. It’s also a great light rain jacket in those foggy spitting cold mornings and similar situations

Great points. Drove me crazy when I was a kid running around playing at school recess or home and adults would force me to put my jacket back on. Even as a kid it seemed like common sense that overheating and sweating in a thick jacket was the opposite of what would keep me warm in the long run. Parents and teachers, when a kid is running around being active, keeping a huge puffy jacket on may not be the great choice you think it is. An adult standing still watching may need to keep one on, but the active kid might just be better off when something a little less.

My go to is an outdoor research motive accent shell. Highly breathable Wind and Rain protection in one. I wear it over your stuff and it's a game changer. The dragon wool hoodie and the regulator down jacket combined with this will get you through a lot. Recently tested on the San Bernardino divide between storms. Can't say enough about the dragon wool. Excellent cold weather base layer!!!

I will have to put my Tushar Rain jacket to the Cold weather test. I haven't tried it out yet in the rain and feel kinda bad about that. But it gets plenty cold in Minnesota, so I will have to try out the Tern base layer and Tushar jacket on my next cold winter walk. Great advice you are providing.

I take off the down jacket as I hike, leaving only the base layer and a rain jacket as you're doing in this video. The down jacket comes out the minute I stop somewhere for a snack and breather. Modern stretchy front pockets on backpacks make this very easy to quickly access the down jacket. Thanks for the video.

Excellent tip Tayson and I concur. It's taken me along time to figure it out and I'm still dailing it in but base layer plus shell for movement is the way to go. For camp or even rest stops I through an insulation piece over the top of everything when I have cooled down a bit. Nate

Love it. Struggled with a MT hunt this weekend for those exact reasons. I knew moisture was the problem but low quality base layers didn’t help either….

Just got back from a hunt. I use Beyond clothing systems Softshell pants and jacket for walking in and walking out and main protective layer. I pair it with their level 2 base layer and level 7 static insulation. The softshell top and bottom provide wind blockage and enough warmth plus breathablity that by the time you get to where you are going you are just warm and not sweaty. From there you can add the static insulation and stay warm for extended periods. I find static insulation over softshell layers provides a lot of warmth and versatility when dealing with high output then long static sits.

I've been right there with you! Bring super light base layers. You can swap around and you'll be amazed at the warmth they can provide!

Why are softshell jackets and pants not more popular for winter?
@duncdunc76
@duncdunc76 Жыл бұрын
They are popular for some activities. Problem is for many people especially in the backpacking world the weight to warmth ratio is considerably less then down so most use down. I like to think of a soft shell jacket as a durable windproof layer that is very good when you need abrasion protection in addition to wind protection.
@thetaysonwhittaker
@thetaysonwhittaker Жыл бұрын
Our experience is a design team with them has been that they just don't breathe enough. When we're active. They don't breathe that much more than a harder shell and their weight penalty is not that great for the warmth they provide. We have better luck with rain jackets or windbreakers! I think they work best for snow sports...
@MrEdgy81
@MrEdgy81 Жыл бұрын
@@thetaysonwhittaker Doesn't breath that much more than a hardshell? I mean, I would like to believe you but I simply don't find that true at all. I have never been clammy in a softshell like I have in a hardshell. I also don't find a hardshell to block enough cold, so I end up reaching for more clothing to layer. Then I'm too hot and clammy because the hardshell cant breath enough. Not that I dont have or frequently use hardshells, one lives in my day bag for the other 3 seasons. Its just in cold dry climates I prefer the softshell in a layering system, it has always seemed to make my insulation layer that much more effective. I'm also far from UL so I don't start worrying about weight until its too late, lol.

@@MrEdgy81 I don't doubt that they work really well for you. However, for me they haven't worked that well. That story I shared in the video was actually me wearing a soft shell when I got too sweaty. I'm a very sweaty hiker so even though they do breathe more than a hard show will, it's still not enough for me. So for me I want as much customizability as possible. So having a hard shell with options to layer underneath it to get the same effect as a softshell with a fleece backer works better for me! I could definitely see how people that sweat less than me could have a pretty good experience with a softshell... But also when considering weight I just don't get enough value out of a softshell!
@EVR1AL
@EVR1AL 9 ай бұрын
I think many people confuse what a soft shell and hard shell really is. Nebo windbreaker is the lightest possible soft shell and Tusher rain jacket is lightest possible hard shell, membrane sandwich fabric. You want to use a soft shell as much as weather conditions allow. But they both have DWR.

@Tayson Whittaker Hoping to do more winter hiking this year so I ordered the Ventus Hoody last night...I already own the altitude sun hoody and the Nova UL....would you suggest the Ventus with the Altitude hoody for hiking in cold temps? I'm in Maine :) I went out sunday in my beyond clothing setup... just a base layer tee and their celeris midweight hoody and only my back got sweaty because my base layer was looser than I remembered.........boy was I happy I packed a 2nd base layer as well as my Nova UL for the top of the mountain in sub 30 degree weather ;) **I considered trying the beyond celeris midweight with the ventus but I think that would be much too warm while moving.
@thetaysonwhittaker
@thetaysonwhittaker Жыл бұрын
I do hike in the ventus in really cold temps or it's pretty moderate levels of exertion! Sub 30F...otherwise baselayer and a windbreaker or rain jacket. Add a fleece in there to bridge the gap between base layer and ventus would need as well...

So then what are the insulated puffy jackets used for? After you are done with physical exertion for the day?
@TaysonWhittaker
@TaysonWhittaker Жыл бұрын
The short answer is yes! An extreme cold. You can use them also for low exertion activities as well!
@duncdunc76
@duncdunc76 Жыл бұрын
Yep. The more heat your body generates the less insulating layers you need like he describes in the vid. But when your sitting around camp not generating a lot of body heat you will want the best insulating layer to help preserve that minimal heat your generating for as long as possible.
