Had a chat with Jules (a.k.a. Fairmean) and was happy to hear a lot of you had contacted him about the bag, so many in fact that it was hard to keep up, but he will get back to everyone as soon as he can. I should have mentioned in the video that he makes the bags by hand (solo) to order so It's not an amazon prime kind of deal, If you're in super hurry to get a bag or coming to Japan like tomorrow... you can always pickup a bag at most bike stores here (Not as nice of course, but better than nothing). Interesting to hear that people need to Rinko in other countries as well, as some have pointed out in the comments, most trains have dedicated bike cars where you don't need these kinds of bags, I thought that was the norm, but seems that there's quite a few other places that requires them.

As a Tokyoite, this may have just pushed me over the edge. I woke up to the joys of riding in the countryside after a little bikepacking trip from north Tokyo to southern Izu - I was nigh hysterical in those mountains and i long for it again. Alas, getting the hell out of the urban sprawl has always been a roadblock. For some dumb reason i haven't yet invested in a rinko bag but that will definitely change soon! Hell, i've got everything else!

Nice! I am getting myself one for an upcoming trip. I think one added benefit I discovered with Rinko bags is that if you made a hotel reservation and you want to bring your bike into the room, you face less resistance from the Japanese hotel staff

What you have just shown is that one does NOT need a specific bike to use a Rinko bag and go on the trains. Fantastic!

The rule for Shinkansen is basically same from regular JR train. Put a bike in a rinko bag and you are good to go. Just one note. Eastern JR, between Tokyo and Osaka, will introduce (in 2020?) Yen 1000 charge for large bags that you store behind the very back row. West of Osaka remains free.

Very nice! I often travel with my Brompton folding bike with a zip cover. It is awesome for trains, buses, and even to cover it and take it into museums, shops and office buildings. The bike is always safe (since I don't have to lock it outside), and I can simply unfold, fold the bag, and pedal away! Thanks for the great videos!

I think you can still use just a rinko bag on the Shinkansen. I agree that the rinko bag is a must have in Japan, and opens up so many options!

I use a Montbell bag which a friend brought back from Japan for me. It makes it really easy to sneak my bike onto the bus or train in the UK. 😊

I was just in the mountains west of Tokyo, riding. I was staying in Higashimurayama, so I simply biked an hr on the crappy crowded streets before reaching Ome, from which I rode inyo the mntns. Next time I am going to get this bag and save 2 hrs for the mntns. You are so lucky. Now back in flat Singapore.....

I caught the Shinkansen last year with a rinko bag (and a pair of panniers, saddle bag and handlebar bag - quite a workout carrying it all in and out of the station)

When I first heard about Rinko bags, I thought, "what a pain in the . . . " But when you think about it, it is a good idea. It's about the consideration of others. Can you imagine being a passenger on a train, then arriving at your destination with road muck and chain grease on your, once was, clean clothes. Hi, thank you for your work on videos (with funny music and insets, screenplays etc.). Just some idea for one of your short future videos: as you are obsess about loss of bike weight, arrange some gravel bike race with lot of dust and mud, check the weight of dirty bike after it and then clean it and get the result with the difference in weights (how much extra weight do the riders take with them if they don't clean the bikes after dirty ride). In my opinion it will be interesting. Sorry if I miss such video/info at your channel.

I've taken my bike, packed up in a Rinko bag, to a Japanese domestic flight check-in. Japanese airlines are familiar with handling a bike in a Rinko bag. They do not bother measuring the dimension of the bag. and accept it without an extra charge.

I wish I had these for Italy! Every train requires that bikes be bagged. My wife and I made do with garbage bags.

Pretty sure the Shinkansen is cool with oversize luggage as of now - i take my double bass on there sometimes and even that's ok with no extra charge! But I hear it's changing to where they'll be charging for the space behind the seats in the end of the car, so I'm not 100% on how long it'll last.

My Fairmean bag has literally changed my riding life here in Tokyo. Good stuff! Also, you'll never convince me about the canned coffee...I just can't do it!

I took my bike on the Shinkansen a couple of months ago. I put it at in the space behind the last seats in the carriage No one said anything, although people did manage to pile suitcases on top of it... My bag ripped as well, but hey, it got to where I wanted to go.

You can take your bike on the Shinkansen with a Rinko bag. I did it back in May.

It would be great to see Fairmean produce something similarly compact that would mean taking a bike on a TGV journey would be straightforward. You'd need to remove both wheels and possibly stem and bars to be small enough for the onboard luggage regulations. So you'd need something protective under the chain rings / rear mech so the weight and size would be bigger - but it would be dead handy to take your bike easily on Europe's high speed train network. It would make trips to climb mont Ventoux straightforward for anyone on a line connecting to a TGV that went to Avignon-TGV for example!

I wonder why there’s no significant Japanese racing pros out there? They have the terrain, the pavement as it seems, the physiology (think of martial arts), heck even the heritage of Shimano, not to mention sponsors. They would be like Colombians, French and Italians all in one. So why there aren’t any?

Wow. I continue to learn more about japan from your videos. Never knew you needed to use a bag for your bike. Everywhere I've been in the US and in Europe you just walk in with the bike or in some places there's dedicated hooks for hanging your bike (some US cities, all German regional/non-express trains)

Very cool. Often pondered some kind of rinko bag for the occasional train travel with a bike and especially thinking european high speed like ICE or TGV (cough - as if an German ICE could be considered highspeed, even after factoring out all the delays). Which dimensions has the packed up bike in the bag? For SNCF trains, offically a stored bike doesn't have to exceed 20 x 90 cm. Does this bag meet this? Has some other viewers experience with a bike packed in such a way in a TGV for example?

Taking a bike on Shinkansen is doabla, but you have to took off both wheelset and pack the your bikes as compact as possible

I got the Mont Bell bag ~ 6 years ago - no need to flip the bike upside down. Maybe they've changed the design.

What bike would you bring to Japan? I spent two days in Tokyo and two weeks in Kyoto in 2016 (without bike) and started dreaming of spending a month in Tokyo... My gravel bike is a 3T Exploro, and my build is very mot NOT a weight weenie build. I plan to get a proper road bike (probably 3T Strada) this winter, and that will be a weight weenie build, though I haven't decided if I will try to go down to the UCI limit...

Hey I love your channel so much! thankyou for all the content. I'm coming to Japan(from Australia) soon, with my bike to do some cycling, sight seeing and then ride in the l'eroica at izu peninsula. I dont know how much experience you have with flying in/out of Japan with a bike, but was hoping to get your advice as someone who really rides and knows the culture. I will get a cardboard bike box for the flight, but thats too big to take further than the airport! I dont know if I can get a taxi to take me(expensive too) with such a big box or how I would get it onto the train to shinjuku. Seems to be too big for luggage forwarding services? In india and in turkey when I arrived by plane, I assembled the bike at the airport, rode off and left the box there... no problems! But these are much less organised and "proper" countries than Japan. Also, there are very few good/small packing Rinko bags available in Australia, so I want to wait to buy one in Japan... What would you do in my situation? I have sent an enquiry to narita airport but wonder if I'm overthinking the whole thing and it will be fine to do as I have in the past.

The official rule with most railroad companies is that the entire bike including the seat has to be enclosed in the bag so be prepared to be stopped by their employee once in a while but then again you can quickly take off your seat post should that happen.

The Fairmean bag takes 2-3 weeks to come from France. I'm in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. My eye-opening experience the past 10 days is: there are 1000s of bicycle shops in Japan but NONE that I have visited sell rinko bags (Shizuoka city, Fuji city, Odawara, Yokohama and now Ikebukuro). They all tell me to order it online and that because many in Japan don't buy it from them, it's too much of a hassle for them to stock it. 2nd, the biggest market of bicyclists in Japan are moms & electric bikes. I can't find any bikepacking bags (handlebar bags, frame bags, seat bags). I've asked 4 bicycle shop owners today if I could get a box from them 5 months from now, and none of them could promise me one. You even have bicycle shop owners that do not know how to adjust a derailleur. 3rd, my bike doesn't have a stand & I was denied parking at a bicycle parking lot. All bicycles can only be parked at designated lots. There are even old men with yellow sashes that says "Patrol" who write out warnings that you're parked illegally.

Interresting, didn´t know you would need a train bag in japan. But this might also be an interesting option for me here in germany. In general all public trains have bespoke areas to put your bikes, but most of the time they are quite full and people slamming their bikes over others without taking care. also, the straps (if any) to secure the bikes are often broken, so that whole mess of entangled bikers slides around in the train. not funny if your pride and joy is the one buried beneath three of four 30 year old rusty dirty city bikes. such a bag would help protecting it at least a bit.
