PE Foam FAQ I will update this with information regarding this mod as it comes to my attention, as I want to make sure those who try this mod are equipped with as much knowledge about this as possible. But as always, do this mod at your own risk! Improvements to my method: I saw this video (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bNZlqcWU2ti1moU.html ) after posting the guide and I now believe that the method they used in that video is probably the best (making cutouts for just the stabilizer housings and wires). For some boards, this is not fully possible (namely around the spacebar), but aiming for something at least close to that would be ideal. To compensate for not being able to cut around the spacebar, you can actually add a small piece of foam to just the spacebar just like this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lad0krF8vpjQXZs.html . The effect of this piece of spacebar switch foam seems to differ depending on the board. The GMMK Pro in the video seems to benefit from it a lot, whereas the effect on my 67 Lite is a lot more negligible (based on my own testing). How do I know my PE foam is non-conductive? If your foam is stated to be anti-static, ESD, or conductive (duh) it is conductive. I got someone I trust to test the conductivity of regular white PE foam with a multimeter and they confirmed it to be non-conductive. To be 100% sure that your specific foam is non-conductive, you'll likely need to use something like a multimeter to check (unless it's conductive properties are explicitly stated). Why do my switches sound "crunchy" after doing this mod? Chances are your switches are not fully seated, and you're hearing the sound of the foam being compressed. Double check that they're as far down as they can go! Why are my switches "ghost-pressing" or "double clicking" after doing this mod? Chances are your switches are not fully seated, or there is an issue with the pins. Is this better than tape mod? As with most things in the custom keyboard hobby, it all comes down to preference. Here's my sound test comparison of the two mods individually, as well as together: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fb6imKaikt3Ufo0.html Why doesn't my board sound exactly like the Jelly or your 67 Lite? This mod produces a pretty loud sound that takes over the sound signature, especially in boards that are muted otherwise. Although, there is still obviously some variation: case design, mounting style, plate material, switches, use of sound dampening, dampening material, etc. all play a role. There is also a notable amount of variation between recorded sound tests sound and real life, so it might not even be possible to match a certain sound test's sound exactly. What happens if it's hard to peel off the thin plastic layer? If you're sure there's a plastic layer, try using something fine like tweezers - you should hopefully be able to peel it off like end the end of a tape roll. If it seems very very stuck on there you should be good to still use it with the plastic layer, but definitely poke holes for the large middle pin, and be careful when inserting switches! Depending on how strong the plastic layer is, you might get quite a few bent pins, but those are easy to fix. Be sure to support those sockets as shown in the video, and you should be golden 👍 If you have any more information regarding this mod, please let me know in the comments! If you or someone you know has encountered any significant issues with the PE foam mod, please drop a comment or email me at technologybrotherYT@gmail.com with the full details! I'm always interested in learning more and helping out.

@Brudder
@Brudder 3 жыл бұрын
@@dasomannen hmm... that might be due to the foam rubbing against the bar, or the housing not being fully seated because it's sitting on the foam. If you make cutouts for both, I feel like it should fix your issue.

I will say that some boards benefit from this mod more than others. Boards that are quite muted without it like the Jelly and POM plate Phantom definitely benefit greatly from this mod, but I'm not sure if I can say the same for the 67 Lite. Regardless, it's fun to experiment and learn more!

Consider that there is no unique sound signature for any switch. The same switch can sound different in different boards even without foam. But yes, stuffing the case with foam is obviously going to mask whatever sound you might have gotten without it.

@Brudder
@Brudder 3 жыл бұрын
Just going to comment here to clarify that the foam in the Amazon link isn't 100% confirmed to be non-conductive, but we have evidence of it being totally fine over multiple weeks of daily use so far. I suspect that most foam that has conductive properties will be marketed as anti-static/ESD/conductive, so I'm quite sure that the linked foam should be non-conductive (I'm likely going to be using it in future builds if I run out of foam from keeb packages). But, of course still try at your own risk! Also, I know what YellowNotThe means when they said "antistatic" but I want to reiterate for those reading this comment that antistatic foam should not be used as switch foam as it is conductive!

QUESTION: I put a 1.5V battery under a sheet of PE foam. My logic was: To take a multi meter measure of a battery wrapped in PE foam. If the multi meter showed something when touching the wrapped battery with the leads - then the foam is conductive. If no measurement - then it is not conductive. Well, took a measure and it showed 1.5V. So my question is: is my method correct and is my PE foam conductive? Thanks!

@@zl_390 PE switch foam tends makes the switches louder and alters the sound signature a bit. Plate foam, like that EVA plate foam you're using, absorbs sound between the PCB and plate. Anti-static means it is slightly conductive, as it is intended to dissipate static shocks away from electronics while they are being shipped (not intended for use in plugged in electronics). If you're using regular, non-conductive foam there shouldn't be any issues regardless of what material the case is made out of. But if you're using conductive foam for some reason, there will still be risk of damage to your PCB, albeit slightly less than if you were using a metal case.

I asked a PCB designer about this and they said that it should be fine! I've been using it for a few weeks on my 67 Lite (LEDs on for a few hours a day) without any issues, but yeah that's not exactly a rigorous test. If you want to be super duper safe, making cutouts for LEDs would definitely help. @Brudder

I would recommend plate foam, as the PE foam mod can produce a quite loud sound without any sort of foam to dampen it. IMO, plate foam "cleans out" the harsh sound from the PE foam mod. But, if you don't have any plate foam on hand, others been able to achieve a very nice sound with case foam as well. Any additional foam alongside the PE foam seems to help a lot!

@Brudder

It's not 100% confirmed, but we have evidence of it being totally fine over multiple weeks of daily use so far. I suspect that most foam that has conductive properties will be marketed as anti-static/ESD/conductive, so I'm quite sure that it should be non-conductive (I'm likely going to be using it in future builds if I run out of foam from keeb packages). But, of course still try at your own risk!

You might be able to, but I honestly wouldn't recommend it - it starts to sound more distorted the thicker you go from my testing, and you also risk the switches becoming unseated over time if your board is hotswap. Others have used quite thick foam without issue though, so YMMV!
