Best known as the Islamic power in Central Asia which collapsed in the face of the Mongols, the Khwarazmian Empire has a good deal of name recognition, but is rarely studied in its own right. Here, I try to contextualize the Khwarazmian Empire, trace its rise to prominence, and show why it was so vulnerable to Mongol aggression in 1219.

I literally have been searching-intermittently- for material on Jalal Mingbuirni and Khwarazm for months. Tried on Saturday and found that u put this up a week ago.. asking myself "but I follow Therstites, how'd I miss this ?" Lol. Thanks a lot. Pls do cover this region and if anything maybe something on the economic stature of the key cities. I think sometimes we get lost in the Alexandrias, Athens and Romes without considering that some Central Asian cities were arguable wealthier and more important to global trade at certain points.

Great video, enjoyed it. I already knew the basic story of Khwarazmia and why it eventually lacked cohesion in face of the Mongol invasion and this lecture lays it out very well. You did neglect to mention one important general of Khwarazmia who inflicted several defeats on the Mongols named Temur Malik. He also served later under Jalal ud-din Mangubardi and those two were basicly the underdog heroes for Central Asian Muslims against the Mongol invasion whom I deeply admire, so here my not-so-subtle suggestion for a follow-up viddy on both Jalal ud-din and Temur Malik and the shortlived re-establishment of the Khwarazmshahr... 😉
@ThersitestheHistorian
@ThersitestheHistorian 3 жыл бұрын
I'll have to look into Temur Malik. He did not come up in my readings on this topic, although to be fair, I didn't read much about the campaign itself. I am definitely considering doing a video covering the career of Jalal ad-Din.
@tangren3370
@tangren3370 3 жыл бұрын
@@ThersitestheHistorian Understandable, because Temur Malik was mostly know from the Mongol Invasion onwards, especially for his valliant defense of Khujand (of which he was the governer) by retreating to a fortified island on the Syr Darya river, holding out until food supplies ran out and eventually escaped by sailing off the island in a convoy of ships down the Syr Darya were he was eventually forced on land by blockades in the river by Mongols and was then defeated in battle, but did escape with his life. Later he regrouped and defeated Jochi near the Kyzylkum desert and eventually served under Jalal ud-din himself (after he became Sultan)... According to one story, he outlived Jalalud-din and returned to his native Khujand (in modern day Tajikistan, were he is still a national hero to this day) in order to stirr up new resistance to Mongol rule, but was recognised, captured and executed. As you may understand from this, he is as adventurous and interesting as Jalal ud-din Mengburnu, but just less famous outside of Central Asia... Nevertheless also part of Jalal ud-din's story as well, since he served under him later. So since you will cover Jalalud-din 's career, he would be an interesting addition 😀 I hope to have informed you somewhat, keep up the good work Thersites! 😊

hey great video do you think that if the mongols weren't provoked by kwarazmians they would've not gone westwards(atleast for a while maybe till genghis's death ) and instead focused on conquering the xia jin and song china
@ThersitestheHistorian
@ThersitestheHistorian 3 жыл бұрын
Hard to say. I feel like the Mongols would have moved west eventually, but if they had chosen to focus on the complete conquest of China first, then that would have given the Khwarazmians plenty of time to consolidate. Given Muhammad II's strategic goals, he might have had another go at the Abbasid capital and so long as he launched the campaign at some time other than the dead of winter, he would have had a decently high chance of success.

The Golden Horde had a huge impact on the early Russian empire and even the modern Russian state. Some say, if you scratch a Russian you will find a Tatar. The Tatars were hugely infulential on the early Russian rulers, and it can be said they poached all kinds of ideas from the Tatars, concepts unknown to the early Slavs, and ways of organizing their army and society.

This region was never conquered by any empire. That is Alexander empire, Mongol empire, Muslim empires.... Even during Iranian empires such as Achaemenid or Sassanid dynasties, we always had local kings ruling over the region with only ties of friendship with the central authorities.

The main weakness of the empire was that the political elite and the army were divided into two groups, half of the elite and the army were subordinate to the Mother of Khorezmshah named Turkan Khatuna and were at enmity with each other, so Khorezmshah was afraid to unite the entire army in one place and meet the tired Mongolswhich were initially in the military assembly of the Khorezmshahs, Prince Jalal ad Din advised the Khorezmshah exactly this way.

In defense of Subutai, Jochi may have had nominal command of the armies, actual command was with Subutai. Jochi was there to learn from the master general Subutai (Subutai trained practically all younger generations who travelled with him on his campaigns). The first battle between Mohammed and the Mongols was an absolute defeat of the the Khwarezmians. The Mongols had 20000 warriors max, and Mohammad had at least 40000, of their elite troops, and were refreshed with 20000 more troops fairly early in the battle. The Mongols destroyed their left wing and center and almost captured Mohammad. The battle lasted 3 days after which the Mongols left the battlefield since the battle wasn't a part of their mission. Subutai used this battle to form the strategy of entering and conquering the Khwarezmian empire years later, which again was under nominal command of Ghenghis Khan and his sons, but was orchestrated and directed by Subutai.

well as a Turkmen, Muhammad the II is the worst (turkic) ruler for me. not only was he arrogant, he lacked any skills that were required by a sultan. mother's influence, lack of strategic prowess, lack of organization, lack of control over subjects, so on. he is 1st on my "worst list" actually :). due to his inability to lead, one of the mightiest empires (at least had a potential to be) fell into ashes alongside all the great cities. gurganj, merv, Iranian cities, baghdad would have greater chance of survival if Muhammad would not reign. On the other hand, Jalaladdin is my favorite hero-like ruler. He is called king without throne in our history books

I am a Khorezmian and I am proud of my nation and the history of my nation!I am the pure bearer of my nation,and I will tell you that some Iranian and Uzbek historians began to spread that the Khorezmians came from Iran But it's a lie ! Khorezmian is a separate and independent nation older than the Egyptians and Iranians Please do not believe any stupid historians and liars 🙏
