I’m now making swift consequences instead of long and drawn out.
We had to do something different because the kids weren’t coming forward and it was a constant blame game to get others in trouble.
It took me way too long to realize that I wasn’t creating a safe environment to own up to our faults.
How about you guys?
What’s your protocol for creating a home environment that is heavy on relationship and not just obedience?

Love this! My girls are little, eldest is 4, but we have done something similar. When she breaks something, makes a mess, does something she isn't supposed to, and TELLS us, we always *always* start by thanking her for telling us. We tell her how happy it makes us that she brought her shortcoming to us. We want that honesty. I love this idea for keeping that ball rolling as our littles get older!

You have a fun and lovely kitchen. I love the spatula microphone and how it is not phasing your daughter. I love how chill you are and love the things you talk to your kids about. It is good to set examples to our own children. I love how you thank your kids for practicing graciousness. Aw.

What approach or pivot comes if she learns whenever she wants cookies to do the wrong thing for an opportunity to do the thing she wants to do anyway and be confronted for prizes?

I like the philosophy but how will one learn if there is no consequence for negative behavior.

Typically the consequence of their sibling or us not trusting them is a big enough consequence. “You broke my toy last time, so I think I’d rather you not play with this one.” Earning back trust is a pretty big natural consequence, in my opinion. Making it right with people takes time and work.

Question.... I love the idea of rewarding confession, but do you then not punish the wrongdoing? Asking as a young first time mama.

Depending on the age, really! So when I say, “reward”, I am considering praise as a reward. “Good work, buddy. You did the right thing by telling the truth..” They still might need to have a toy put up, make it right with the sibling, or head to their room for a time. My thought was an all day punishment or week/month long “grounding”
