In the pantheon of movie assassins with hearts of gold, Chow Yun-Fat, as the title character in John Woo’s The Killer, is at the top of the list. It’s no stretch to say that without Chow Yun-Fat and John Woo’s run of heroic bloodshed action ballets in the late eighties/ early nineties, movies like John Wick wouldn’t exist. In fact, Keanu Reeves’ sharply dressed killer was directly inspired by Chow Yun-Fat in this film. In it, he plays a smooth assassin whose conscience gets the better of him when he accidentally blinds a young nightclub singer (Sally Yeh) in a shootout. Determined to pay for a pricey operation to restore her sight and leave his violent life behind, he finds extricating himself from the underworld isn’t easy. Along the way, he finds an unlikely ally in a hard-bitten cop (Danny Lee) who, at first, is bent on taking the hitman down but eventually sympathizes with his plight.
While influential, John Woo’s The Killer isn’t without influences of its own, which we get into in this examination of what we believe is Woo’s best film. Written and narrated by Chris Bumbray, with editing by Ric Solomon, in this video, we explain how Woo’s career was at a crossroads in the late eighties and how this helped pave the way for his eventual move into American movies. We also examine how Chow Yun-Fat became iconic and why we think The Killer narrowly edges out Hard-Boiled as Woo’s best film. We also examine how the film had come close to being remade many times, with various screenplays intended for people as varied as Richard Gere, Denzel Washington, Lupita Nyong’o, Omar Sy and many others floating around out there.
Do you think The Killer is John Woo’s best film and Chow Yun-Fat’s most iconic performance? Let us know in the comments!

I think The Killer has the emotional center that Hard Boiled didn't have. Face Off has it as well with the family relationships. It's rare to find action flicks that can tug at the heart strings while also delivering the intensity. John Woo could do that (at least in a few of his films). I think Chow Yung-Fat's screen presence is beyond cool in this.

As a late teen in the 80s who loved movies , John Woo was so much fun to binge... picked up Hard Boiled by accident at Blockbuster one time.. and watched every one of his movies available at BLockbuster..then found a mom and pop Video store that had all these random foreign movies.. was heaven and my favorite movie store from then on.. that is where i picked up The Killer and A Better Tomorrow. such a great time to be a nerd.

I think "The Killer" IS the masterpiece. Chow Yun Fat does the assassin with a conscious with fantastic style. And Danny Lee excels as his counterpoint. When ever the term "Gun Fu" shows up, I always think of CYF and his movies. That said, the dubbed versions shown is this essay was quite a jarring experience having never heard it before, as I avoid them like the plague. Prior to my first viewing, I'll never forget Des Mangan, a presenter/reviewer on SBS Australia at the time, saying "I'll give you an unbiased review of the following movie… It's a Masterpiece! Oh, well, so much for that … " and he continues on. Needless to say, I was not disappointed. And there's a DVD copy in my library of course.

The Replacement Killers introduced me to Chow Yun-Fat and Face Off introduced me to the work of John Woo. When I first watched The Killer I was in awe. I watched it 6 times and wanted to learn more about Woo's films. A local video store was going out of business and I would go there to pick through what people might have overlooked and discovered a couple of his films; Once A Thief and Bullet in the Head. Bullet in the Head is a really powerful piece about the politics China was facing when the film came out. I've seen most of his films, own the Criterion Collection Hard Boiled DVD. The Killer still continues to hold my attention more than Hard Boiled, it's action is more character based than the technical brilliance of Hard Boiled. It wears its emotion on its sleeve and without apology more than any American action film I've seen. John Wick owes its stylish violence to the impact of John Woo in action cinema. Both films focus on simple stories told really well allowing the action to become character revelations. They speak through their action and their skill. For me, you can't be a fan of action films without having seen this film. Sure you can see how often his style has been ripped off, but not with the same balance of action and character that make Woo's films distinct to him. He has a cinematic fingerprint that seems to set him apart from most contemporary action film makers today. Thanks for this video.

The Killer. Key word here is pacing. There are times in Hard Boiled were it is boring because there has not been action for quite a while and in the end, for example, you got numb and tired of action because it has been dragged for too long. In The Killer you never feel bored or numb because it is so well paced.

Chow is the actor's family name, not Yun-fat, so he should be "Chow" on second reference. Good effort pronouncing Tsui Hark's name mostly correctly ("Choy Huck"). The Criterion Laserdisc version of The Killer is the definitive and best version. That one dispenses with the goofy Western names (Jeffrey the hitman? Seriously?). I agree with Alpha Whiskey below: watch the subtitled version rather than the dubbed. Thanks for doing this one!

I love your vids Chris as you are so well versed in film. I saw The Killer as my first John Woo film in high school in the 90's. My mates brother was into foreign cinema. I was blown away by the stylised violence. My mum and dad even liked it. After that I watched Hard Boiled and then I searched for everything John Woo had made up until that point. Could not get enough. I remember being in the cinema way back in the day watching something I can't remember and there was a poster for Hard Boiled with Chow and the baby and I remember looking at it thinking that looks cool (no idea at the time it was a John Woo film and not old enough to watch an 18 cert). When Replacement Killers came out I went to the cinema to watch it and went for almost every JW film that was released thereafter (I missed Windtalkers). For me, I can't decide between The Killer or Hard Boiled. I own both and I think they are equally as good but in their own way. Bullet in the Head has always been a favourite as well.......and lastly, A Better Tomorrow II is the best in the series. Chow Yun-Fat will always be a pinnacle of my love for film growing up.

The "best" John Woo movie is hard to declare because many of them are good for different reasons. 3:19 "In his magnum opus, 'Bullet in the Head,'"... BITH is the best of his heroic-bloodshed bullet-operas. It's crazy that Chow Yun-Fat isn't in it and it's all because of whatever went down between him and Tsui Hark. But It packs so many of his themes, ideas, and so much melodrama into one movie. It's a true journey, a roller coaster of emotions that leaves you feeling like you've survived years of harrowing misadventure, loss, and betrayal yourself. "Hardboiled" though is probably the best pure action movie he made, but "The Killer" is the best *Chow Yun-Fat* movie. Even though CYF is in "Hardboiled," and creates yet another iconic character with Tequila Yuen, "The Killer" may be his finest performance. "Hard Target" is the best movie Jean Claude Van Damme ever starred in ("Bloodsport" is the iconic Van Damme movie that showcases his star power better than any other, but "Hard Target" is an objectively better movie) And then "Face/Off" is his best Hollywood movie. But we can't talk about his "magnum opus" without mentioning his triumphant return to classic wuxia with "Red Cliff." It's the perfect fusion of his classic Hong Kong sensibilities and his experience with big budget, A-level Hollywood production. It's "Gladiator" or "Braveheart" with wire kung-fu.

Great summary. I actually think Bullet in the Head (one of my faves) worked better without Chow. I think it helped distance the film from previous JW and Chow colabs. Yes, still has the heroic bloodshed theme but Chow had been the best character in all JW films up until then and it would have been more of the same when I feel BTTH was trying to be more in-depth and serious (regardless of the violence). I thought the cast did great.....I hope I get across what I am trying to say. Do you know who Chow would have played? Quite interested.

I got absolutely obsessed with John Woo and Chow Yun Fat over lockdown in 2020, ended up spending quite a bit of my paycheck on getting my hands on imported DVDs from Amazon. Watching the films in order of release was something of a spiritual experience. While I appreciate A Better Tomorrow (and to a lesser extent its sequel) for me Hard Boiled takes the cake over that and The Killer. A lesser known but equally rad Chow movie is Full Contact, released the same year (1992). It's way more over the top than any of his films with Woo but it has that kind of grindhouse action feel and the ending is badass. I think with Woo directing it could have been up there with Hard Boiled, alas Ringo Lam directed and as a result it doesn't quite have the same emotional impact. Still a great movie.

This film started me on a Chow Yun Fat fan journey that lasted for years. I wanted to see everything Chow Yun Fat was in. Though some of the movies may not have aged well, this is the list as follows (Note the list stops at 1997): 1) The Killer 2) Hard Boiled 3) God of Gamblers 4) A Better Tomorrow 5) Treasure Hunt I have seen the first two of this list more times then I can count. Definitely worthy watches. There is still regret and sadness that even as a fan, I could not get over his rather atrocious accent. He'll speak English better then I'll ever speak Chinese, but his inability to learn the English accent/hide his Eastern accent hurt him so much at the box office. Well, that and a lot of his post 2001 movies just weren't written very well. I wanted so much to see him successful in the late 1990's and early 2000's. We, as audience members, saw some of Chow Yun Fat's greatness in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, but it wasn't the dual wielding, gun ballet master that so awed me as a 15 year old boy.

The Killer is great. What makes me prefer Hard Boiled instead as Woo’s masterpiece, which is much better IMO, is the fact that The Killer is filled with a lot of melodrama. These scenes have not surpassed fully the test of time. That’s not to say that it is a bad film; it was in many ways influential. The Killer helped him polish his style, which made him prepare for his true masterpiece that is Hard Boiled.

I see this a lot in many videos and reviews of A Better Tomorrow. To the non-cantonese speakers, Mark Gor is not the name of the character. Mark Gor should be translated as "Brother" Mark. Gor is Mark's title. This is a casual "honorific" title used by the Triads to refer to older more senior members in the Triads. If you want to know, in A Better Tomrrow, Mark's name is actually Mark Lee. Most likely people assume Mark Gor is the character's name due to the poor subtitles

Loves the movie, yet the KZfaqr uses the English overdub for it.

I'll always recommend Hard Boiled over The Killer if push comes to shove. But The Killer is very, very good.

I like how you didn't talk about availability because golden princess the rights holders reportedly refuse to license the rights too anybody for any amount of money. So do not expect any new official transfers til that changes or if that changes. However I do own this movie on disc like 6 times. Korean bootleg of criterion dvd,fox lorber winstar dvd,the badly compressed dragon dynasty dvd, taiwanese dvd of the extended Taiwanese cut.the uk hong kong legends dvd and a bootleg blu ray from an infamous bootlegger that took months to recieve.

Fun fact John woo is a devout Christian so he not so subtly put pigeons into every movie as allegory to the holy spirit

I really liked The Killer but I prefer Hard Boiled. To me though, Woo's best film is Face/Off. He has the huge budget to shoot all those crazy action scenes and both Travolta and Cage were great in their roles.
