The Kindness of God to LGBTQ People (with Becket Cook)

This week I sit down with Becket Cook to discuss how Christians should respond to people living the LGBTQ lifestyle.
Becket Cook was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. He attended Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas. After graduating from college, Becket moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of writing and acting, finding success in both. He eventually went on to become a production designer working with the top photographers and directors in the world on fashion shoots for magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, and for ad campaigns such as Gap, L'Oréal Paris, and Nike.
Finding a new sense of freedom in L.A., Becket also fully engaged in his new life as a gay man. He had a series of many relationships with men throughout the next fifteen years. In September of 2009, Becket met a stranger at a coffee shop in Silver Lake who invited him to his church in Hollywood called Reality L.A. Becket reluctantly agreed to attend the service. After hearing the sermon that Sunday, Becket was utterly transformed by the gospel and gave his life to Christ. He also knew on that day when God revealed Himself to him that homosexuality was a sin and that he could no longer live that life. Becket was more than happy to count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus his Lord.
Becket spends much of his time in ministry speaking at churches, universities, and conferences helping believers (and non-believers) understand this issue biblically, theologically, culturally, and personally. Balancing grace and truth when teaching on this subject is of primary importance. His goal is to challenge the current cultural narrative about sexuality in general and LBGTQ ideology in particular.
Becket graduated from Talbot School of Theology at Biola University in 2017 with a Master of Arts in Theology.
Becket’s book, A Change of Affection: A Gay Man’s Incredible Story of Redemption was published by Thomas Nelson in 2019: amzn.to/3IgiaJd
Becket is the host of “The Becket Cook Show” on KZfaq and all podcast platforms, where he looks at the lies of the culture through a biblical lens. ‪@BecketCook‬

Love your story. love 1 Cor 6. Unfortunately it seems like so many only quote: 9) Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, 10) nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is where they leave it.... Sadly it is not anywhere God's heart and the story. I watch so many video and engage in a lot of conversation.. I get so frustrated seeing people think they are "Doing the work of The Lord...!" Not sure why people only give the bad, condemning, "I'll show you..." part of the passage... I love focusing on and stressing the key verse i'd say in the passage is more... 11) Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God. It is really really sad to see, and i'm dumbfounded why people who are "Christian" don't share the best part. I would argue God is above all a God of restoration and bringing what was dead back to life... Love Becket's story. If anything might be the wrong image by think anyone will catch the point i'm getting at.... I can't help think of say a big game hunter who has all the walls in their house full of trophies of animal heads... I can't help thinking in a way that is like God in that He will show and demonstrate people who were so far gone who we all might think would never want anything to do with God... But there they are hanging predominately right in plan sight proclaiming the good news of God restoring all... I love as i get more mature in The Lord we see: Rom 2:3) But do you suppose this, O man, when you pass judgment on those who practice such things and do the same yourself, that you will escape the judgment of God? 4) Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance? God is love... I wonder if just half the self-righteous pharisees to proclaim the fire and brimstone you're damned to hell... blah blah blah actually shared the love of God... Can't help think there would be a huge difference in the reception of the Gospel would be greater...

My daughter lived a very risky lifesytle. Lost. Oblivious. Jesus intervened many times saying, when you know me you won't need or want this. She more or less had cleaned her life up when He told her that is not the answer. I am. So she surrendered her life to him. The transformation was visible and tangible. Even strangers stopped her in the street asking........are you the girl who used to.....? (She was very beautiful with distinctive hair. Stood out in a crowd.) Later, I asked her why she had done the things she had done. She it was what she believed she was supposed to do. Now, a new creation. Yay.

I've been a Christian for 22 years, I still smoked weed and other drugs, I still had sex with male strangers. I knew it was wrong, but hard to stop. I watch Jimmy Swaggart, who had some sexual problems. He understood the message of the cross. Christ's death saves and sanctifies. The Holy Spirit works exclusively through this. I can't beat sin by works. So I stopped trying. The sex slowed, and stopped in the last year's. I repented, knowing it was just lust for me. 3 weeks ago my 50year pot use dropped away along with beer. So things aren't immediate. Some sexual acting out can be phycological, like persons who are manic, self medicating also happens. My view is if you have a same sex attraction, and don't see it as who you are, stop living a gay lifestyle repent, God will work. Just love your daughter, the devil gets us at a young age and lies because it's who HE is. My identity isn't gay, it's new on Christ. You made my day. Turn to the cross and the victory in Jesus's finished work

@@dand4485 You can't have one without the other. All that love and mercy sound nice....but you have to repent...or at the very least CONCEDE that you are a sinner. Today's queers seem oddly defiant about doing that. So you're doing them no favors by emphasizing God's mercy. That mercy is not available to many of them...not so long as they have the audacity to deny that they are committing a heinous act...

When the students at Asbury prayed for the presence of God, it took them to repentance. There is nothing more glorious than to feel God’s kindness to take us to that place and feel His forgiveness. And I mean for anything and everything. Some things that are considered lesser sins are actually not. We all need a truly loving God!

I have read Becketts book. There are differences in his story and mine. I look at the similarities. I once identified as a gay man. Lead a lifestyle of bars, sexual encounters which i look at as unhealthy now. I found it to be miserable on the whole The hostility i experienced from heterosexual people was horrible. Abused and at one time brutally assaulted. I had an alcohol issue for years. Self medicating my emotional pain. I reached out to the lord broken one day. My cries were answered, and i have been sober for six years. In those six years I have been in a process of change. I was told to repent my sinful life. I did that and have been living a cleaner lifestyle. I no longer have ANY desire for any gay relations and the gay culture either. My life is so much better.

I heard Beckett’s story years ago, so I bought his book, and have been a fan ever since. Josh does a great job in all he draws out of his conversation with Beckett. The most important part was highlighting how Beckett’s church lovingly invited him, and gave him room to listen to The Holy Spirit convict Him of the truth of sin. All sin. I knew and loved Beckett’s love and devotion to God, and this interview is important for every truth seeker out there! Thank you, Josh, and Beckett.

Becket, you have to know that you encourage me so much to not give up on a particular young lady who has been bringing her grandmother to our Spanish services. She’s a lesbian. You would be so proud of our little group, we have never made her feel unwelcome. Our lay pastor teaches the truth of scripture, and there were several times when he clearly taught homosexuality is a sin. He did not turn to look at her, and no one turned to look at her. I prayed and asked the Lord Jesus to open her eyes and heart to hear the truth. During one particular mid-week Bible Study, she shared that she’s been learning so much about Christ and that she loved Him so much. I have reached out to her telling her that I miss seeing her in church, which is true. Her job has her working such terrible long hours and so she’s not come for several months. I believe it’s the enemy trying to keep her away from hearing the Word of God and from fellowship with our little group of believers. Becket, please pray for her, her name is Kathy. The day she fully turns to the Lord Jesus and forsakes her lesbian lifestyle will be a day in which all of Heaven’s angels will rejoice and our little group will see the power of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord be glorified in Kathy’s life as He has been glorified in yours, dear Becket.

Don't blame others for your sin ("We inherited all sin when we were born"). Your sin was from the foundation of the world. Only one Gospel: The Gospel of Reconciliation. Jesus Christ came into THEIR kingdom to reconcile fallen angels unto Himself. We are the fallen angels (ELOHIM) kept in DNA chains of darkness. If you do not confess being a fallen angel in Lucifer's kingdom, then you are an unbeliever. Unbeliever = those that claim to be made in the image of ELOHIM(gods). REPENT FALLEN ANGELS.

He poured out his kindness upon Sodom and Gomorrah? We need BIBLICAL clarity, we don't need people muddying the water, if they are living that way they are to be put out of the church, they can be accepted in IF they repent and then they can't continue to identify as LGBT that is divisive, we are new creatures in Christ. Emotional stories are usually meant to break people down which is why churches are caving to this issue, they go by feelings not the Bible.

How should a parent approach the issue of gender identity confusion, when said confusion is the parent's, not the child's.

Becket as a parent , not telling a child that homosexuality is sin is not what God would want us to do. We should love and pray for our loved ones and Share that with the individual. Fear keeps many parents from confronting the child . The fear of God grips me more than the fear of confronting a child. I have heard your talk show on many occasions. I hope you would revisit why your mother was probably in fear of telling you that at the time and the letter she wrote was helping her release the fear. Please encourage parent to tell their loved the biblical truth and this will set them free

He knew that his parents viewed it as a sin, if they had confronted him at that time it would have pushed him away. They loved him and prayed for him and never gave up praying. God can do so much more than we can.

I think what he means is tell them once clear and do not call them all the time or take away help from them. He also says one should not go to such weddings. He knew and was sure of what his parents thought. Maybe his parents could have acted a bit differently and still be gracious. Them being gracious to him left such an impression on him. I think, if your kid does not know that you think it is a sin and that it is a sin, you should tell them. 🙏

Many Christian parents know their kids know their lifestyle is sinful, if they went to a Bible teaching church and also taught them at home. There is no need to keep nagging and nagging. We pray the Holy Spirit will convict them of their sin. Now if you didn’t raise your kids as a Christian and they’ve never heard the truth, that’s when you definitely do need to confront. But that’s not the case for most Christian parents.

@@Julia29853 l knew a Christian man whom went to church regularly and studied the Bible but he was attracted to children. It is not because you know about God that will stop you fron sinning...The key is to truly experience the Holy Spirit, without him,, we will stay blind even as a Christian and continue sinning as if God doesn't exist. Only God transforms people if we pray for them or if they are really ready to accept him.

God Loves sinners, sin is sin, Jesus Gave his life for all to be saved a plan, an action plan Peter said what to do to be saved. When I was Born Again I was filled of the Holy Ghost God's spirit in me and spoke in Tongues that's how I became a New Creature in christ Jesus. Was washed of my sins In Jesus Name ACTS 2:38-39 I believed, repentant and washed my sin's in Jesus Name, ACTS 4:12 no other name given where we must be saved. I was Born Again of God's spirit in me, Holy Ghost in me and spoke in tongues, when you speak in tongues you speak to God not to men 1 Corinthians 14:2. Yes I was ORN AGAIN.

Hello, my 15yr old daughter has a friend & his name is Paul( precious young man) he identifies as a transvestite. She wants him to stay the night & I’ve been saying no cuz he’s a young man & I don’t think it looks good for them sleeping in the same bed. I’m a Christian & I’m not really sure what to do. I’ve been saying no but today I said yes he can stay. I truly love him but he does identify as a young woman & they’re not attracted to each other at all. I pray for both of them that they will find their identity’s in Jesus

Beskett you are very charming and smart. I am very touched by your story and understand why you have the conviction, as you do; but I am sure your dear mother did not say: "I love you but I love God more..." So why would you give this advice to somebody else? Also I call BS on the title of this video becuase there is nothing kind about it.

Affirmations and law of attraction are some pretty scare New Age beliefs. 😬 God calls us in His Word to bring everything to Him in prayer. He did not take away the "thorn" in Paul's side that we are not told what it was and God's "wonderful plan" for Stephen's life was martyrdom. Sometimes God let's us suffer for His glory and to show us our need for Him. Here on youtube Melissa Dougherty has some excellent explanations of New Age beliefs and why they don't agree with the Bible.

Sodom and Gomorrah was thee main and only lesson any one in the gay and trans community needs to understand about what God thinks and feels about gay and trans lifestyles. If you don't repent and change you will be cast into the lake of fire. God does not change, you have to.

What happened at Sodom and Gomorrah is not a finger pointing solely to those believing in the normality of homosexuality. It is a lesson for the bad decisions we all make in our own lives. The story is just as much about Lot's decision to live in a land that looked so "desirable", his decision to offer up his daughters, and Lot's wife's decision to look back while being told to flee.
