The Sin of Empathy (with Joe Rigney)

In this episode, I discuss the ongoing empathy discourse with Joe Rigney.
Dr. Joe Rigney serves as Fellow of Theology at New Saint Andrews College. He is the author of six books: Live Like a Narnian: Christian Discipleship in Lewis’s Chronicles (Eyes & Pen, 2013); The Things of Earth: Treasuring God by Enjoying His Gifts (Crossway, 2015); Lewis on the Christian Life: Becoming Truly Human in the Presence of God (Crossway, 2018); Strangely Bright: Can You Love God and Enjoy This World? (Crossway, 2020); More Than a Battle: Experiencing Victory, Freedom, and Healing from Lust (B&H, 2021), Courage: How the Gospel Creates Christian Fortitude (Crossway, 2023). Previously, Dr. Rigney served as a professor and president of Bethlehem College & Seminary in Minneapolis, a pastor at Cities Church in St. Paul, and a teacher at Desiring God.
Joe is a teacher who can’t help but tell others about the things that fascinate him, and he is a generalist who is fascinated by a great many things. He loves to teach classes on biblical theology, C.S. Lewis, Shakespeare, English literature, political philosophy, and Jonathan Edwards. Beyond teaching, writing, and preaching, Joe loves to play baseball with his three sons and spend time with his lovely wife Jenny.

I'll never forget the day when a lady from the church I attend complained with me saying "Jesus is at the door, coming back to take His church, and there are people that aren't empathetic yet" (I just have said that churches were empty because God was taking His beloved soons to be with Him - by dieing) Right when she related the second coming of Jesus with been empathetic, a red flag was raised in my mind: God wants us to have Charity/Love, not empathy In terms of psychology of empathy, it's also almost a physiological instinct. Having mercy, charity, love is a matter of choice, decision, refuse yourself. However, empathy is not, mainly because we have a brain area that most likely deals with it.

The guest needs to provide specific examples of what he’s getting at. Based on this interview feel like anyone could take the “sin of empathy” and project their pet dislikes onto it. He acts like we know from the get-go exactly what he’s talking about. I would also like to see some pushback and counterpoints from the host.

Haha. Yeah, without any context that does sound weird, doesn’t it? That refers to the ministry of Doug Wilson and his Canon Press publishing/production company based in Moscow, Idaho.

As an aside, why does Rigney use Piper’s term “Christian Hedonism”? That is a term that is unnecessarily flammable to the nth degree. Why not Christian joy? When in doubt, use the language of the Bible to the exclusion of easily misinterpreted, worldly terms. (Or was that a marketing gimmick of Piper? Titillation of the youth for gospel purposes? If so, not good.)

Check C.S Lewis and Chesterton on God as the hedonist. It's a different way to look at it for sure. Don't remember the books to quote for you, but it is to be found in their writing. They may certainly be wrong on the subject, but do remember that they had read and studied probably more than anyone alive today. I myself am not sure, however. But it is interesting, at least.

Great info, but his description of this "empathy" doctrine is too abstract. Concrete examples are needed to understand this false doctrine and how it's put into practice. I recently saw "Christian" counseling that was based on this empathy doctrine. Without that, I wouldn't have understood Joe's message here. It was exactly like what Joe described: a husband told his wife that she was neglecting some important housekeeping responsibilities. She was "deeply hurt" by that, so the counsellors viewed her as a victim, and the husband as wrong and "cruel". It did not matter that the husband's claims were true and that her negligence was causing significant family problems.

It's difficult to narrow down what he means, even when he and Doug Wilson discussed it. Empathy by definition is something that many of us simply have engrained in us, and more so, the more we pursue love in Christ. If one knows how the other is feeling, they can much better relate to get them out of the ditch so to speak than if they do not know. I get the feeling only those who do not "feel" empathy will buy into this. With that said, your example above is not what I am talking about, I'm talking about feeling the pain of others, for example when you see one weep, you may not be able to help but to weep with them, its true compassion coming from within, not just compassion because you are told to be compassionate. That version is okay, but so is the one who is gifted to feel the pain others are feeling, which sometimes can be overwhelming and not feel like a gift at all. Maybe I am missing the point altogether, but otherwise, I don't really get this.

I completely agree. Broadly he seems to mean valuing feelings over truth, but he wasn’t even very clear on that point. The whole interview goes on as if “sin of empathy” is a specific and widely-understood term. The entire this is frustratingly vague, to include the host’s vague agreement with every answer.

The title alone seems narcissistic. Who doesn't have empathy naturally from the get-go of life It only grows stronger it's not a sin to feel empathy Lord have mercy. 🙏😇🏳️‍🌈
