I’m actually surprised about who the animators are. It’s Rankin Bass at their best with the animation, but not their best with the musical “Killing off Maleficent dragon by singing Hi Ho” That was hilarious!
@snazzyhodag5963
@snazzyhodag5963 5 жыл бұрын
Even more suprising is that it was done as a joint effort with the company that eventually formed Studio Ghibli and the studio that made Neon Genesis Evangelion. So without Rankin Bass, animation as a whole would not be where it is today.

Rankin/Bass didn’t actually animate it in house, they outsourced it like they did with their other productions. The main studio responsible for the animation here was Rich Animation Studios, founded by Richard Rich, the director of this film as well as The Fox And The Hound and The Swan Princess (another Rich Animation Studios production). Some portions of this film were outsourced to a few smaller studios though.

I don't know... I think the whole Disney adaptions thing is a bit different than this. Though I am not familiar with the source material of Disney movies like The Little Mermaid but am familiar with the source material for The King and I, I believe that Disney is trying to change the story enough to where its kind of its own story while still being recognizable as an animated movie adaption of its source material. With The Kind and I, its still essentially the same story. It just has several details changed for the purpose of (I believe) 'protecting the innocence of children' and 'not conveying values that our society doesn't follow' (referring to the major character deaths, as well as the idea of the king's multiple wives and Tuptim being given to the king as a wife or concubine from the original, respectively), since this movie was trying to market itself to children. Also, there were some details, like the Kralahome, that were changed just make it more fantastical for children as well, and a bit more Disney-like, but they just weren't executed very well at all.

Lada Zhdanova Thats different. Its actually understandable why Rasputin is used as a villain in the Anastasia cartoon film. The real life Rasputin ruined the lives of the royal Russian family. Not just a book. Isn't that an autobiography? Actually, I think the subplot about the prince and the servant girl was more interesting than the main plot. False, Kralahome isn't trying to be a rip-off of Scar. He's more like an East Asian version of Jafar. Interestingly enough, Master Little was actually based off of a jester who was known for his great teeth. Aw come on, that panther is awesome. To be fair, Kralahome's dragon was some kind of illusory magic. Honestly, I think The King and I would have been better as an animated adaptation of the real-life events. Considering what animation can do, that would have made for an awesome clash of cultures.

The King And I animated film is undoubtedly one my most memorized childhood programs. I used to watch it all the time when I was a kid. It may not be one of the best non-Disney animated films I've ever seen like with The Prince of Egypt or The Road to El Dorado, but it does still have a place in my heart when it comes to nostalgic entertainment.

I do like this film in my childhood however I do strongly agree with you is that this could be a great animated musical film and would've been one of the best non-Disney animated musicals like The Prince of Egypt and Anastasia. How could the filmmakers screw up such an interesting concept and it's source material?! I wish Disney or different animation studio could make another great animated musical adaptation of the King and I.

7:10 Don't you mean an obvious rip off of Jafar from Aladdin? No seriously, the comparisons are simply unavoidable. Both are villains, dabble in the dark arts, and both have completely annoying sidekicks. The difference was that Iago at least had some good moments in the movie. P.S. Aladdin is one of my personal favorite Disney movies.

Here's my problem with your defense: it's ALREADY a musical! The script is already laid out and is lauded as a classic, even though it's adapted from a deeply racist blatant character assassination from a woman who just wanted to cash in on her fame. So at best, it's equivalent to gluing glitter onto a Monet. At worst it's glorifying the works of a bigot.

I find it idiotic that Diva's Musical Hell can't show her rant about The King and I (1999) and yet you can? Why is Morgan Creek frontman James G. Robinson involved with this? And how dare there be a Rankin/Bass Production WITHOUT Jules Bass?! Unacceptable! And don't gimme the lie that this is all about copyright issues. This movie was done in by its depiction of ethnic stereotypes. The critics noticed; and even the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization noticed. And that's why they told Arthur Rankin, Jr.: "We can't let you make our musicals into animated cartoons."

About making this appropriate for theaters, the point of adding darker elements is to attract older audiences which they should've done instead of just pandering to kids. This is why the ratings, PG, PG-13, R, & NC-17 were invented to begin w/. I know it wasn't usual for animated films during the time it was released to be rated PG but they could've been creative.

Believe it or not, I actually like the comedy and romance better than the actual story. I was actually more interested in seeing Louis being charming and seeing the elephant being cute than in seeing Anna try to persuade the King in what is right. First of all, not only was Louis only interested in pleasing Anna and doing what is right, but the elephant was so adorable, being a young child and coming out of such an unfair zoo. Secondly, because of how ruthless the king was, especially forbidding his son to marry the servant girl Tuptim, all I wanted was to scream for him to shut up. I know a lot of people will disagree with me, but I actually prefer the comedy and romance over the actual story. However, I do agree with Animat about the animation being beautiful and how the songs should not have gotten the visuals they had. I'm convinced that the songs are what really get all the hatred in this movie.

I am like you and saw this movie first before the actual play or the other movie made in the 50s. I watched this as a child.
