The scene with Rita and the guy from the bar seems like it's from a completely different movie.

I like how the scene in the bar reveals that Rupert is actually capable of violence. But in fact it wasn’t particularly necessary to show that. They made the right decision in the final cut of the film.

I am glad they removed the extended bar scene. I understand that they were trying to show how uninterested Rita was in Rupert, but the way the editor put this film together was perfect.

These are a great find for fans of the movie, but I can see why they were cut. Apocalypse Now: Redux had loooooong scenes that stopped the movie in its tracks and showed why the original 1979 cut was so much better without them. Editors are the unsung heroes of great movies. But thanks for the upload of these scenes!

Insane to see this, but at the same time it was wise to leave most out. Jerry's monologue was a .99 cent joke book mess, and shit, they really painted Rita as some sort of desperate opportunist. Crazy how removing tons of the bar and restaurant stuff still allowed the later scenes to still fit when Rupert walks Rita home. On the other hand, Rupert in the basement with "Ma" and definitely Rupert's fantasies (the best scenes in the film) should've been left in.
@chrisfreeman9960

Jerry's monologue was definitely unfunny. I stopped watching it after a short time, even though it was a rare deleted scene. That kind of unfunny monologue could never make it on an actual late night network broadcast.

Rita was indeed an opportunist: she stole a trinket from Jerry's house when they were getting thrown out. Anyway watching her screw up an entire scene starting at 12.00 is instructive: De Niro badly wanted to make this movie and his girlfriend in it even though she couldn't act. Scorcese - in the throes of addiction and professional uncertainty - agreed, as a favor but was in such a mess that some scenes were directed by Jerry Lewis just to get something in the can before the crews stopped for the day. Which is why it looks different from every other Scorcese movie before or since.

Diane Abbott was the sister of Gregory Abbott who had a one hit wonder on pop radio in the 80's. She was also DiNiro's lover for many years. I think this movie is a must for any film class, warning everyone who wasn't to act or direct that it's a rough business and not the glory of being a fleeting 'star'.

Glad they didn't include the dirty jokes of Jerry Lewis...I didn't find them funny at all. The scene with Rupert and his lady in the restaurant was interesting but I also thought it was better left out. It was very sad how Rita took off with a perfect stranger when Rupert was in such a passionate state talking about the most important moment of his life. Rita seemed more kind than in this scene and the other one in the bar where she mocks Rupert calling him a creep from the end of the bar with the other man coming onto her.This scene is incongruous because she knew he wasn't a 'nice man' does a nice man try to flirt with a stranger behind the back of her date? I would have included the interview with Jerry Lewis and Lisa Manelli because even in his fantasies Pupkin is unbearably self absorbed cutting her off twice in the most rude manner.

This movie was not only disturbing due to the main character’s delusions and denial, but I feel like Scorcese was trying to highlight the general emotional pain that comes to all men Rupert’s age. From 30 to 35 , society expects all men to be married with a family, a home etc..The bar scene illustrated very well, the desperation and vulnerability some men who are still single over 30 who haven’t really ever had luck with the ladies go through. You feel like the whole world is wondering why you’re still alone, people are almost repulsed by your presence, and worse than that….they don’t even take you seriously. I think that is a big contributing factor to Rupert’s irrational delusions and insanity. Getting on Jerry’s show was his emotional escape/mission in life. The most ironic part of this film to me is that I nought De Niro’s and Sandra Bernhardt’s character would have been perfect soulmates for each other but in fact he did not really give her a second thought in that way. Great Film.

Rupert reminds me of a lot of guys I've met that just seemed to say the wrong thing always especially when they're around women. I've seen guys try to pick up a girl in a club many times and they have got her in the palm of their hand and then they say something to blow it. We call that a born loser . Most guys are when it comes to women . But you are right Rupert in the movie and also Sandra Bernhardt are definitely delusional and dangerous. There are fans and then there are fanatics . And those two were definitely fanatics fanatics . 😮
