Happy 60th anniversary to British rock icons The Kinks!
In May 1965, drummer Mick Avory spoke to ITN about a now-infamous onstage incident. A classic tale in rock mythology, accounts of the incident differ and have been revised over the decades. According to this interview with Avory, the drummer accidentally hit guitarist Dave Davies in the head with a cymbal during a "big action" rendition of You Really Got Me. Dave Davies, the brother of fellow founding member and lead singer Ray Davies, needed 16 stitches after the incident. Other recollections state that Mick hit Dave very deliberately, and that the alleged attack was just the most public and bloody of a series of bust ups between the drummer and the guitarist. “Dave and Mick were just 17 and 19 back then and forever having a go," Ray Davies told Wales On Sunday in 2016. “I just guess that on that evening Mick decided to do something about it, and that meant cutting my brother’s head off!”

rock theatre was a thing the who pioneered in '66 with a quick one, the kinks didn't really do that stuff till '69 with Arthur and by then the Who's Tommy had already been released

@kelechi_77 I've got that album. Never saw it as 'rock theatre', and neither did anybody else. Probably cos it wasn't.

This is an incredible piece of video. Don't know that I've ever seen Mick interviewed in this early era. He must have been instructed to say that everything was fine between he and Dave. Never heard that excuse given before. Thanks for posting!!

I'll tell you one thing. I love Mick as a drummer but I wouldn't want him as a witness at a trial. Even if I didn't know the real story I wouldn't have believed this little interview lol.

The thing is though if you watch any Kinks footage Dave is always smiling at Mick. Like Keef and Charlie

We all know he said it was a lie, because he and Dave didn't get along that well and actually fought on stage but you have to say other things on TV because they twisted it in a bad way.

From what I heard Dave suggested since Mick couldn't drum well with the drumsticks maybe he should try using his sexual organ

He's less than truthful there. It happened at the first show at the Capitol Cardiff. I was at the second, hadn't heard about the fight, the Yardbirds played twice. My friend who was at the 6.30 said they were glaring at each other, words were exchanged and all hell broke out then down came the curtain. Pointless him lying like that as there were a hall full of people watching it happen.

i agree with you, but you know it's tv. if you say that if there was a violent confrontation on purpose, the viewer will think it's a problematic band and it will market the music project badly in the long run. i guess that's why he lied. And as for the rumor about him using his sex organ, that may be true. Dave always wanted a louder sound on the drums especially in the seventies but we all know that Mick has a very jazzy style of playing so it was difficult for him to please Dave on the sound, hence the comparison of him hitting the drums with his sex organ lol.

@@user-dr7bq9lx7c The Kinks are my favorite band and while what you say is true it is also true that the Kinks were a VERY PROBLEMATIC BAND, There is an interview with John Gosling and Mick Avory on youtube about working for the Davies brothers. It seems Dave would be friendly and laughing one minute and the next minute he'd be out of control busting things up and yelling at everyone. Ray is a diagnosed schizophrenic. Add to that Mick Avory was much closer to Ray than Dave ever was which really outraged Dave and you have a pretty untenable situation. If Ray wasn't the amazing songwriter he was these guys would have blown up early. Talent masks a lot of problems thank God or else we would not have heard their amazing music. God save the Kinks

Oh yes....I had a ticket for the Gaumont in Wolverhampton the following night. No Kinks of course, and the substitute band was the Walker Brothers. Genius has it's flaws!

Every word he said is TRUE> Proven by the Kinks sending up their on stage & off stage aggravation with the song 'Hatred' with both brothers putting eachother massively down. They went for times when they didn't even speak FFS!~~
