Cracking song, isn't it? Waterloo is in London... the "Terry" in the song is supposedly Terrence Stamp, aka the original General Zod in Superman II.

Ah, man, I love your reaction to this one! "Waterloo Sunset" is one of the greatest songs recorded, and The Kinks are the best. Ray Davis is a very English storyteller in most of his songs - "Celluloid Heroes," "Sunny Afternoon," "Days," "See My Friends," "A Dedicated Follower of Fashion," " A Rock & Roll Fantasy," "Misfits," "Shangri-La," "Better Things," "Picture Book," "Village Green Preservation Society," "A Well Respected Man," “Tired of Waiting For You,” “Full Moon,” “Get Back In Line,” “Living on a Thin Line” to name only a few. :-)

Waterloo sunset is all about where Waterloo bridge is situated in London where the Kinks come from.... they are so London.... Waterloo bridge stretches over the river Thames right on the bend in the river and you can see all the sights of London from this bridge and the sun sets naturally along the river .... This is pure magic from Ray Davies , the Kinks frontman is a pure songwriting genius and all us old London Mods adore him.

The Kinks were an iconic 60's London band they had three # 1 records in the UK between 1964 and 1966, this track just missed out on the #1 spot but hit #2 in 1967. The lead singer Ray Davies had a successful solo career releasing his last album "Americana" in 2017. For me "Sunny Afternoon" was the most memorable it was released in 1966 the year and the summer that we won the soccer World Cup.

Who knows. 😂 Anyway, I’m so glad you did this one! I agree - it’s so beautiful. I listen to it on loop quite often. You’re right about that Beatles sound. Ray Davies said he was inspired by Merseybeat when he wrote it. Merseybeat basically refers to bands from Liverpool of that era, like the Beatles. In fact the song was originally titled “Liverpool Sunset”!

I think this is the best song they ever recorded and one of the best in all of pop. It's much loved, some have even said it should be the British national anthem. I love the descending bass, the guitar melody, the singing, the lyrics. Delve deep into the lyrics, they're like the surface of the river the singer is gazing at. He doesn't need no friends and he's not afraid but is this true? Is he in denial? Ray Davies had a mental breakdown back in the '60s, too much stress having to write all their songs, being newly married, banned from touring the States, flagging record sales. They should have been huge; having a better producer would have helped and a reliable manager.

What I really love about "Waterloo Sunset" is that it sounds like the place it's written about. I've always thought the way the harmonies "drift" was evocative of the bustle of that part of London, or a cold evening breeze, and it perfectly encapsulates the feeling and the strange tranquility of being alone in a crowd. It's probably pop music's greatest ode to loneliness and solitude.

A great song. Poignant yet strangely simple and direct, with an underlying note of love for a city and era that it and the band that performed it embody perhaps more effortlessly than any others. It speaks of ordinary people living unremarkable, even uninteresting lives but who can still radiate an ingrained contentment. People who like most of us, may often derive an inchoate sense of security, a reassuring impression of familiarity and 'belonging' from their home neighbourhood's endlessly repeated daily sights, sounds and routines. Things that mark THEIR own daily experiences while still presenting them with beauty on occasion.

Waterloo Sunset is about a bridge across the Thames River which is flows through the middle of London. It's right next to Waterloo Station, one of the major commuter hubs, and where thousands of people traveling to and from work in the city change trains, The Thames can be very beautiful and you can walk across the bridge and get a great view up and down the river. I was in London once walking across the bridge and thinking about this song, and a musician friend who was with me started whistling the tune without saying a word.

One of their best, along with Hollywood Boulevard. Waterloo is London's busiest railway station and its underground (subway in the US) station referred to in the song is the second busiest. Jay, you asked where Waterloo is and what the Sunset was like, so, as someone who was born at the Elephant and Castle and lived at Waterloo for 17 years, let me tell you. Waterloo is in South East London (SE1), just south of the river (Thames). It was a combination of Industrial, Commercial and low end Council accommodation. We lived on the 3rd and 4th floors, your 4th and 5th, of a block of flats, (Apartment building). If I got locked out, which happened on a regular basis, I would climb up and over the flat roof and drop down onto a ledge outside my bedroom window! There wasn't a Sunset to speak of due to the quantity, proliferation and height of the surrounding buildings, unless you were on the roof! I have painted in Oils, the memory of the view over London from the roof, which included Waterloo Station (1884), the Shell Centre, Big Ben (Elizabeth Tower), BT Tower, Oxo Tower, Old Scotland Yard, right across to the east to Saint Paul's cathedral. Don't get me wrong, the painting isn't exactly a Ygartua and some artistic licence has been used....but it does show the sunset.

There are so many great Kinks songs. Times I spent playing in the garden when I was a kid, this coming in on dad's CD player through the window. They never really made it internationally like the Beatles, but for me they were one of the key British bands of the sixties. Songs? Oooh, I'd go for 'This Time Tomorrow' which simply about travelling and has a great yearning feel, 'Powerman' as it kind of rocks, 'Victoria' for being the best song ever written about a monarch and 'You Really Got me Going' as it's pretty much the birth of metal. One thing about The Kinks is that they feel hugely comfortable in switching between rock, wistful ballards and novelty songs. They're pretty great. :)

Javaughn, youu heard my request.Thank you thank you. This song is considered the most beautiful song ever written . I recently revisited the Kinks. The y were banned from America and didn't get beatle stutus but are every bit as worthy. The song Strangers is the most beautiful song too. Wes Anderson uses their music in all his movies. Their albums are great one after another. I coudlnt stop singing this song or get it out of my head for weeks. Love you so much.

Can’t tell you how happy I am that you did this song! It’s probably my favorite by them. So laid back and uplifting. Harmonies take you away....And you’re so right about the Beatles vibe. Right out of the gate they talk about, “dirty old river....” that would be the Mersey that all British bands crossed to come to America. Ferry Cross the Mersey gives me that vibe every time. Loved seeing your face light up just like mine does every time I hear this song!

@Who Knew? Wow. I stand corrected. I appreciate very much that you didn’t just attack me as being stupid, which seems to be the ‘new norm’ these days. Guess I got lazy and just ‘assumed’ instead of taking the time to look it up. I got the country right though? If it was over here in the U.S. I would have said it was the Charles River in Boston, Mass. The Standells wrote about it in their song, “Dirty Water”. (Hope I’m right about that! 😂

Dirty old river is the Thames. Waterloo Sunset is the view from Waterloo Bridge, quintessential song about London, which Ray Davies obviously loves.

This is pretty Beatlesque. A British band from the '60s doing song with a great melody and the back up singers saying "la la la". This song is from '67 and "Lola" is from '70, so this is a little earlier, but not a whole lot. "Sunny Afternoon" would be a great song of theirs to do next.

A Kinks songs that is definitely worth reacting to, especially right now with all that has been going on in the U.S. and the world over the last few months, is "20th Century Man". I think it fits chillingly perfectly in today's times and is now as relevant es ever. It's from their album "Muswell Hillbillies", which was called by many critics to be the best or one of the best albums of 1971, though, like many Kinks albums with similar reviews, flopped commercially, but is really good nonetheless!

@JayveeTV When it comes to The Kinks, I know what I'm talking about. Go for "Tired of Waiting for you" "Sunny Afternoon" "David Watts" or "Days", those songs are more accessible if you're not that familiar with their work.

'Terry meets Julie, Waterloo Station every Friday night' is a reference to Terence Stamp and Julie Christie who were famous young actors in London in the 1960's and were going out together.
