Anyone here ever drink out of a breakfast bowl or measuring cup because the glasses and mugs were all in the sink? Yeah...me neither. BTW, I love this lady--and she has the best audio podcast called "A Slob Comes Clean Podcast"!!! If you love her, but just aren't getting enough of her from KZfaq, then check out her podcast (and her books). She has HUNDREDS of super inspiring episodes about every decluttering topic imaginable.

I have been out of glasses and used a mug or a bowl instead of a plate. What helped me with the dishes was to get rid of almost all of them and start over. I bought loose Corelle plates and bowls and new glasses. I removed the Rubbermaid containers and replaced them with glass containers with lids. When things are uniform and you have only what you need (plus a few)there is more room, and you must keep up with dishes.

Please do as many videos as you can in 2021. I’ve listened to both of your books as well as podcasts. You, Dana K. White, have changed my life. I really thought I was the only “slob” in the world. My house is neater, though sometimes still messy. But everything has a home and a 5-10 minute “whammy” (as we call a tidy-up) does the trick. Thank you. ❤️

This is few years ago..my parents would buy buying new things but won't give away old one. One day I started decluttering when they home they freak out and said I just wanted to throw away everything that still good condition....I said we got all this new stuff we're not going to use old one anymore so why keep it around they said just in case we ran out... I said if we ran out we'll wash it 🤯 my mom said you're right go ahead and donate them 😂...we end up donated half of our belongings. Now anything we don't need or use will be donated. Our house is organized and clean all time or doesn't take long to clean or reset...I clean up and wash dishes every night kitchen is the heart of the house.

Sooo... if you don't follow a routine you feel like you need more. If you follow a routine you realize you have enough. I love this and I think it applies to many parts of life! (Just a few day ago I actually started a routine of running the dishwasher every night and unloading it every morning. I can't believe how simple that makes my life! I'm so tuned in to this video.)

That was an "aha" moment for me when you said that you trust yourself to do your dishes every night, so you knew your favorite dishes would be available,,,I hadn't heard it phrased that way, but it's true, consistently cleaning or doing dishes every night is caring enough about yourself to keep your commitments to your future self!

Your explanation is spot on. A year ago I decided I did t so many place settings, plus glasses, stemware, silver wear, etc. it was very difficult to keep it all accessible in my kitchen. Since we are no longer raising children (my oldest is 50 today) we didn’t need so much in the kitchen. My husband was truly annoyed and let me know it. We’ve been proud that we don’t use disposables. I took all the excess and put in 2 laundry baskets for when we might need them. So my kitchen then looked like it had so much more cupboard space. I just love it. I don’t have to move something to access something else. You are just so right. There is empty space in my cupboards!!! Now I need to move on to paper clutter. This video truly is a blessing.

I have not had a dishwasher since we bought our house 17 years ago. We planned to put one in but i didn't want to lose the cabinet space. So I was EVERYTHING for our family of 4 by hand, all the time. I currently have a tween and a teen home full time with me and my spouse always brings lunch from home, so I keep up with 4 people's worth of dishes, by hand, day in and day out. This means I wash dishes 3 or 4 times a day, but by doing it after every meal or so, it only takes 5 or 10 minutes at a time. I rarely leave dishes in the sink overnight except for perhaps a few cups. I can't stand waking up to lots of dishes (or tough dishes) to be done! We each use the same cup all day, that helps keep down the amount of washing to be done.

Upon your suggestion, I have started washing my dishes everyday and I'M SO HAPPY! (We are in the middle of a house renovation so the only dishwasher I have is myself or my children.) I love walking by the sink and it is empty. I get frustrated when it is full and I can't access it. Thank you for this wonderful suggestion. When I put away Christmas I got rid of 6 Christmas Mugs that none of us use! I have also started keeping my storage containers with the lids on. This is another game changer! I don't have to go searching for a lid and it limits what I can keep. (I did keep a few extra lids that match the bottoms - but I feel that it is GREAT progress.) THANKS SO MUCH!!!!

Ok not literally but it feels like it!🤦‍♀️ I'm SO thankful for y'all sharing your Life- Saving advice on the playlist. Now I followed last wk's playlist advice and minimized my dishes to 1 set each person. I'm so amazed!! This is way easier. Great tips Dana and I have the same type and amount of dishes as you. Additional tip - I empty my dishwasher before I go to bed so "the day is done." My step mom had told me years ago that she emptied it before bed and at that time I did not see any value in it and thought she was just a clean fanatic but in the past several years I strive to empty it each night so I don't have to start my day with a chore and the breakfast dishes go right in.

I'm so grateful that I found your books at the library. When I first started reading, I was rolling my eyes at the idea of "wash your dishes every day" . I washed dishes 5 times a day! But I wasn't willing to give up. I knew I needed a boost in my minimalist journey and if there is such a ridiculous suggestion to start the book, there may be more unconventional advice that I hadn't heard yet. And I was right, or rather you were right. Lol I realized that I was avoiding all these other things by washing dishes, but I realized most of the stuff I was avoiding wasn't a big deal. I completely overestimated the time I expected to do many tasks. I also finally grasped the concept that if it makes my brain explode 😂 I need to get rid of it. Man, my house is thanking you! Lol I am so grateful I am still rambling in this comment lol but seriously, Thank you so much!

Dana, I want to thank you. Such a simple concept but I couldn't do it. Washing your dishes everyday. I used to try the flylady method and it's fine. But I never could do my dishes Her rule was to shine your sink every night. Which means you have to do the dishes. But until I heard you say it. Something clicked. And, it's working it's easy. And I never have dirty dishes in the sink. Every morning I empty the D/W. Then I start loading it. And my boys and hubby are on board too! Thanks again, M. Bailey

That's the only one of your tips that really stuck with me but I am getting into a new habit of completing at least one other weekly chore each day - dusting, floors, toilets, sofa/coffee table, etc. Things that I would save up for the weekend (and then skip for 2-4 weeks) are now done regularly bc they take less than 10 minutes or are just done throughout the day as a walk around with a swiffer.

You're awesome! I don't have a mechanical dishwasher, I have my two hands. I have learned to wash my dishes every single night, I let them air dry till morning, then I put them all away. And so that I don't end up with dishes building up in the sink all day, I've put a dish pan into the microwave where we put the dirty dishes throughout the day so I don't have to see the eyesore until it's time to wash them again. When we use the microwave, we just set the dish pan out on the counter for just those few minutes and put them right back when we're done. Works great for us.

I hand wash my dishes. I started out with using paper plates and plastic silverware because I hated doing dishes. So I started using dishes first the silverware came a month later. And I started making myself wash them all at night but 4 kids and countless meals meant so many dishes at night. So I started doing them mid day and night. I now do them when ever I have 5 minutes. Yesterday I was going to mop there were a few dishes in the sink. So I washed them real quick! Now if I'm in the kitchen I wash the couple dishes real quick. After a meal I try to make sure I was at least the plates. I put my counter top strainer in the basement Bought one that fits across the sink. Not even the whole sink just a small one that rest on it. Guess what? My counter is cleared now where the big bulky strainer was which is amazing and the small strainer is all I needed!!

Thank you for joining me as a “do those dishes every single day” cheerleader! Game changer. Added perk for me is that it’s 1 less decision during my day. I never have to ask myself if the dishwasher is full enough to run: I just add detergent, close the door & hit START. And, don’t let people tell you you’re wasting water. Having to hand-wash a sink of dishes takes more water than today’s energy-efficient machines use. I just love your delivery. You’re so natural, friendly, non-judgmental, and relatable. Keep up the good work! (I’m enjoying the collab through Dawn’s channel, too! ❤️)

I have one coffee cup I got in The Hague at the MC Escher museum that is my favorite. The size is not too big that my coffee gets cold and it fits my hand perfectly . The material is thin and light but strong. I really wish I had more because I have never found one I like as much. Sometimes you want extras of things that can't easily be replaced.

I hate emptying the dishwasher but I found when I wash every night and the washer isn’t loaded with several days worth of dishes, unloading is a breeze. Plus, I have a place to put my dirty dishes every day instead of the sink. Years ago magazines said to never use the dishwasher unless absolutely full in order to be thrifty. At 66 and widowed, I’m glad to learn a new way and I don’t feel guilty! Thanks for all your videos.

Sharing about your favorite coffee mug was eye opening to me. I have a favorite too and I'm sad if its in the dishwasher waiting to be washed. I have a mug tree that holds 6 but only one favorite. That mug tree is full and sitting, or cluttering, my countertop. Time to donate! I have to write out one more thing because I need to share it out loud, know what I mean? My wonderful husband came with 4 or 5 plastic cereal bowls when we married 15 years ago. They are the really old margarine tubs that were made to be used as bowls when the margarine was gone. (He is a farm kid so you don't just get rid of what works...) These, plus the plastic ware we had for our kids to use when they were little (now 13 & 14) are more items I would like to donate but my husband is really resistant. We have a full set of Corelle that are intended for everyday use. I'd really like to pare down but I know I will need to compromise on the margarine bowls... but its a start!

Dana! Thank you for these books and videos 🙌🏼 I have been listening to them repeatedly over the last year. My house was getting more and more out of control but last year it became a legit hoarding situation. They excessive stuff has taken over and the only thing keeping it from getting worse is your advice and hacks. I’ve been able to actually start donating and making less of a mess when trying to dehoard spaces which has helped SO much. It’s still a work in progress but it feels good to have some hope that I can manage this in time. Seriously, thank you!!

Ok I just had to come comment about your book. I just started listening to your first book (the name is escaping me). I’m one chapter in and oh my goodness this is SO me!!! The making your home perfect for a party and vowing to keep it that way only for it to go to crap again within a week...guiltily! My family jokes that I need to plan a party to clean my house and the sad part is it’s true. Thank you for writing this book and making me feel like someone else gets me!!!

I'm not pressuring you, and I would never tell you what to do, buuuut, I love your videos! I especially enjoy the ones where you are two people showing how to handle situations. And I like you best of the three you've been doing your collaboration with. I'm not even cluttered. In fact, my house is generally spotless, but you encourage me to keep staying on top of it! I grew up very, very cluttered. I just love watching your videos better than any of the others on KZfaq.

I can't agree more with what you say about the dishes. I went on the same journey as you!! The dishes were always on my mind anyway, so I decided to use my powers for good instead of for evil, LOL. Flylady inspired me to do it 20 years ago, and it completely changed my life. I learned to do the dishes before I had a dishwasher, although thank god, now I have one. But it's possible either way. Eventually I bought a nice set of Denby and felt good about it! It feels good to have one nice set of dishes you enjoy. And I, too, have Corelle at my office where I eat my lunch.

I don't know if anyone has told you this but you also help those of us who do tend to keep things under control understand the thought processes of those who struggle. I have a lifestyle blog and share homemaking tips. I want to be able to speak to all homemakers, not just those like myself. Thank you for taking the time to really walk us through the thoughts behind the actions (or inactions, as the case may be).

I want you to know that your voice is in my head every time I work on a project. No stuff shifting! Container concept! Do your dishes! Brilliant in its simplicity. I knew you before Dawn but I see you both think alike. During this pandemic our local second hand shop has greatly benefitted from my decluttering efforts.

At first your routine of run the "dishwasher every night"seemed impossible for my family (family of 5 that cooks a lot). We used to run it two or three times a day! But I discovered that if we 1.) Wash the big stuff as we use it (big mixing bowls, butcher knives, etc) and 2.) Make everyone stick to ONE WATER CUP for the day it works!

So happy to see a Dana video! I love the podcast and books, but I love my KZfaq time and it’s great to see you on here! You’ve made such a huge difference for my family. I found you after getting married and thank God I did. Your advice kept my husband and me from getting buried in things from the beginning and now that we have two toddlers I’m so grateful that I know how to keep our home under control!

Dana, I have the same size Kitchen cabinet with the same arrangement of plates and bowls. They are white Corelle, which I love and are so lightweight. Must be a Texas thing! I had pretty blue & white stoneware plates that I hated because they were so heavy and barely fit in the dishwasher. I donated the stoneware. Your decluttering methods are working for me, thank you!

Corelle fan here in Ohio also. I have the ones from my childhood and a few more bought in thrift stores. Love them because they are so thin and easy to store. And if they get scratched with utensils, just use a little Barkeepers Friend on the scratch and they look new again.

I've been finding this out the hard way lol. This is why I do the restaurant quality cook/bake/dinnerware (still working on that bit. The corelles are the closest affordable home option I've found). Having to baby every single item really puts a kink in your routines.
