Please forgive the bad joke here, it's not my fault! But I will use this moment to retell a joke Uecker often told. In the late 1960s, Joe Torre was the starting catcher for the Braves, mainly because he was an outstanding hitter, which, obviously, Uecker wasn't. But Torre was having nightmares trying to catch Phil Niekro's knuckleball, so much so that he would go into a panic every time Niekro's turn in the rotation came around. Joe was terrified of the constant barrage of passed balls that would ensue. So while Uecker was only the backup catcher on the team, he got handed the job of being Niekro's regular catcher, mainly because the manager's only other option was...the chicken catcher Torre.

No sir there is no getting used to the “guys stuff.” The reason the knuckleball is so hard to hit and catch is because it’s 100% unpredictable as to when and where the ball will break in all different directions. There is no learning it. Simply reflexes fast enough to react and prayer for it not to break right before you catch it

The problem with the knuckle ball was stated in the video, its hard to master. R.A. Dickey got pounded in the World Series vs the Royals. The game was over before it began. As a rule it is slower than most pitches making it very easy to hit if not done right. Unless a pitcher is on, chances are he will get hit off the mound in a couple of innings!

Hes not throwing one knuckball. He's throwing several variations by making one finger, any finger, more dominant than the others on any given pitch. That's why he can throw inside and out with it. To go up or down you just add or subtract power to the throw. He's really good. His touch with the ball could end up being one of the best ever. Gonna be neat to watch him grow.

Combined, they set the MLB record of 121 wins by pitching brothers who were in their forties.

I’d love for it to come back. It will. It always goes through ebbs and flows and that’s a good thing. Throwing gas is commonplace nowadays. A knuckler would throw everything off. It’s just extraordinarily rare for someone to throw it extremely well and consistently. Not only that, but a different mentality. I threw low-mid 90s by the time I graduated college. I was right handed. Every other guy could do that. If everyone could do it they would.

Thing about a knuckleball is that it's hard to do anything with for everyone involved. It's hard for the batter to hit, hard for the catcher to catch, hard for the pitcher to throw effectively, and hard for the uno to call. It's a devastating pitch when throw well but if you accidently add any spin to it you're cooked, you're about to be the pitcher who gave up a nuke
@josephbrewer70268 ай бұрын

I used to catch and occasionally coach would let me pitch. I kept it simple with just fastballs and the occasional slider... but I had a secret pitch that I called a "booger ball". It was a split finger knuckler that would consistently sink for some reason... and although I rarely threw it in a game, I had pretty good control over it. My last game Junior year my catcher kept signaling for me to throw it. I shook it off every time until one of my buddies on the other team came up to bat. I had a 0-2 count on him with nobody on, so I decided it was time to fling a booger. My buddy just watched it sail in for strike three... and then stood at home plate with a big smile on his face mouthing "wtf was that?" I then gave him the "usher" i.e. pointing towards his seat in the dugout. haha Man those were good times.

I will say, the reason the knuckleball is so tough to hit is because it moves differently from any other pitch. With the rise of spin rates and the increased value of movement, it's less different from other offspeed pitches in the league, which makes it theoretically less valuable, but also increases the chance for catchers to learn the knuckleball, because it's less strange for them. I can see this becoming more possible with new catchers raised on framing, though idk if teams will seek it out.

if you can throw a quality fastball, slider and another off-speed pitch then having a good knuckleball could really mess up the hitters - you could use the knuckleball with bases empty so you don't have to worry about the catcher missing it. The beauty of the knuckleball is you can tell the hitter you're going to throw it and it won't make it any easier to hit.
