In the far reaches of Northern Europe there is a land of rushing rivers, vast forests, pristine lakes and snow capped mountains. A wild and timeless land where huge herds of reindeer roam, and the Northern Lights electrify dark skies. This is Sápmi, land of the 'People of the Sun and Wind', home of the Sámi Nation. To traverse this ancient Arctic land is to understand that the Earth does not belong to us, we belong to the Earth. A shout out to intrepid Irish adventurer and wilderness explorer, Paul Sheils, whose films inspired us to journey to this remarkable place. Full documentary film to follow...

Thanks, Mark, for your comments. It is a nice part of the world, despite the not so good weather that we had. It is a wild area and in addition to Kunsgleden trail there are many remote unsigned routes, especially in the Sarek park to the west of where we walked.

martin critchley It looked amazing. Paul and I watched a feature length recently on the Kunsgleden trail and when I saw this I knew you were in a special place. I only said to Paul (bro) tonight that the Nordic countries were beckoning. We've only just got passports after many years. Any way, great filming again Martin. Hope your both well. Mark.

Howdy Mark, Thanks for your comments. Yes, this part of Sweden is fascinating. I'd have throught this part of the world would be right up your street. I was loath to leave and would quite happily have done some more of the trail, but the season for trekking is over by mid-September as the mountain stations and huts close until February when they reopen for the skiing season. I'm convincing Martin that we really do need to go back up there next fall!! Look out for the documentary film we're going to be putting together. ATB, Sharron

Kernowclimber Hi there Sharron, good to hear you mate. Your trek sounds awesome and i'm looking out for that feature length of yours. It's going to be good. Yeah the trail looks inspirational in every way and it's only across the water. We have a feature length one up if your up for it. Malcom (Wandering Wolf 2) and I up in the Hay Bluff interior. Mark, that sounds good, just what's needed on wide screen TV as the nights draw in and we can light the fire! We'll defo check that out as it'll be better viewing than the crap on ITV or BBC!!! Don't know if you caught our Picos de Europa film; now there's another lovely area to explore, especially in autumn, and much cheaper than Scandinavia too!

Thanks, Ray. The aurora was pretty special as the skies stayed clear enough for just one time lapse sequence by that lake. The weather was very variable, but what we expected that far north. It's a majestic landscape, a privilege to pass through.

Thanks, yes it's lovely to see the Northern Lights but not so nice to have to get out of a warm tent to do the filiming!

We're going back there for sure. Plans are being mooted for a winter photography trip to Sápmi (Kiruna area in Sweden and Lofoten, Norway), interested? :-)

Thanks, R&D. This region is magnificent, raw, elemental, with endless possibilities for wild adventures. We're definitely going back there next autumn, and hopefully in the winter too!

What time of year is best to go?

We would choose late August-early September for three reasons: 1) the trail and huts are much quieter 2) the autumn colours are amazing 3) most importantly, the midge and mosquito season is over!
