If you want to call what God Emperor Leto II did to humanity "prosperity", when he was teaching a very harsh lesson that our race would never forget, who am I to judge? To Leto, the end justified the means...

By forcing humanity to evolve past living their doomed fate, they also became immune to the inevitable death of any species subject to a deterministic ending. It is the classic choice of all parents: do you pamper child today and leave them unprepared, or do you discipline the child so they are prepared to live a life without restriction.

@@SantomPh Not entirely. Paul saw the Golden Path and knew how important it was for the fate of Humanity, but he was scared of all that it entailed and expected of him. Hence why he chickened out and went to wander the desert as a blind soothsayer, he was too afraid of what he would need to do. This left it up to Paul's son Leto II to step up. Since he (and his sister) were born with the other memories unlocked he was also a KH and foresaw the Golden Path, but unlike his father, Leto II accepted his role in it. Which is why he sought out the water trout to take the first step to become the God Emporor.

One of the more ironic things about the story is that love really does take a backseat to those who strive for power. Either to control it or have it, it's the one aspect that all the groups treated as superfluous. However, it's ultimately love that brings all the things to fruition. The love that Leto and Jessica had that lead to the birth of Paul and Paul and Chiane's love for each other. For something seen as so trivial it ultimately proved to be the final guiding factor in the breeding program.

Chani has children as part of a power play over Irulan, Yueh is played like a cheap organ, Leto II is relieved to be done with the Golden path and regrets his would be love's death is part of it. The Bene Gesserit use family love and loyalty to manipulate their breeding program. This is opposed to the Honored Matre use of sex. Jessica's rebellion and having a son is born of hubris and justified with love. It would be dishonest to claim there was not some factor love played in these actions, but no more so than to claim every character had ulterior motives at the same time.

I like your notion that those blessed and cursed with prescience feel trapped, but only because they can't bring themselves to make a lesser choice. The correct path is obvious. But the human spirit always longs to be free. To see futures before you and to judge one as the only option worth pursuing is death in a sense. There are no more choices to be made.

Qwisatz Haderach means "The shortening of the way" and is described by the Bene Gesserit as "He who can be many places at once" I believe it was not Paul's training as a mentat or training in the weirding way that _made_ him the qwisatz haderach, as he states outright (in the deep desert with Jessica) that he is something _MORE_ . I think it implies that his extra training is what will make it impossible for any of the factions to control him as if he was _only_ the qwisatz haderach.

I always felt that the Bene Gesserit believed that the Kwisatz Haderach was to be their own version of Jesus Christ. A savior that was open about their status and showed it to the people. However, the Kwisatz Haderach had to force humanity down the Golden Path, and in order to do this, they would have to be the common villain to humanity. This is why all other attempts at a Kwisatz Haderach failed, they were told that they would be the former and when they discovered they had to be the latter it drove them mad.

@Kneedragon1962

That's going to be a pivotal scene to the story, and to understanding Paul, and it's going to be unbelievably difficult to convey on film. You are dependent on third person narrative with full first person knowledge, of events that unfold both very fast and in slow motion, that show the past and the Golden Path, and the destruction that awaits if the Golden Path is not followed. In the old Linch movie, they made a fairly big deal of the day Paul took the Water of Life, (although a lot of important background to that was never given) but they skipped that sequence in the still-tent... That's one of the most pivotal moments in the whole story. We did get to see him stand up and declare "Father! The sleeper has awakened!" but they did a complete hash of the few minutes leading up to that. It's just very difficult to do as video - that doesn't really tell the story.

I think the most interesting part of the Kwisatz Haderach is that it changes the idea of the main character being the chosen one. In other stories the focus is put on the protagonist and the mystery of the chosen one. Are they the chosen one? In Dune it is interesting because the Kwisatz Haderach is Paul and we know that from the first few chapters. We the audience want the main character to be the chosen one. The twist in this development is what happens when the prophecy isn't the whole story. Great video!

@@Brainfryde The KH is simply a Bene Gesserit that can see both female and male genetic memories, but what the Bene Gesserit didn't know is that it was a way to see the Golden Path, which they had no idea about. So it was the ability to see the Golden Path but one had to choose to become the God Emperor in order to follow the path. So in the perspective of the Bene Gesserit the KH was just an oracle that could give them power in understanding the future but to the KH's it was a way saving mankind.

As always, loved your video. As always, it was very thought-provoking. One thing that has always been fascinating about Dune is how much Herbert's writing parallels points in the history of the coming of Mohammad and the situation in the Middle East which has echoes in the world we live in today. In this model, Arakis, as the source of spice or melange (I think that the two words are synonyms and not part of the same noun), is like a fusion of the history of the Middle East following the rise of Islam and the establishment over the course of centuries of an Islamic empire, a Caliphate which, at its height extended deep into Europe and Asia; writing chapters of world history that we in Christian countries tend not to talk about at length or too loudly, which eventually lost its its economic and military edge and receded to become a part of the world that was of only incidental interest to the Western Powers (The French occupation of Egypt with the discovery of The Rosetta Stone are practically a footnote in the Napoleonic Wars) until the discovery of the oil reserves (the parallel of melange) that made the remnants of the former empire an object of interest to the west following the two world wars. It is in this that the parallels between Paul Atreides and Mohammad, intensify because, when war was more a matter of the courage and determination of the combatants than they are today, the rise of the religion that Mohammad established, used the precept that anyone who died fighting to spread that religion would instantly be given admission to paradise, built an empire that at its height spanned across continents, wiping out what had been there before ("Constantinople" to "Istanbul") and leaving cultural artifacts that we see in things as disparate as the Arabic-derived names of many of our naked-eye-visible stars (e.g., "Rigel," "Betelgeuse," "Mintaka," "Alkaid,") to the Arabic loan-words that persist in Spanish (e.g, "Aguila," "Alfombra"-Eagle and Carpet, respectively) and the Enclaves of non-semitic practitioners of Islam to be found in widely separated parts of the world from the Albania, to Malaysia, to China. This influence, brought about by religious war, would even reshape the history of mathematics by replacing all the alphabet-based number systems with a set of compact, discrete symbols for numbers that made numbers far easier to work with than they had been previously, as well as spreading the use of zero from following its discovery in the court of a Hindu monarch that would free computation from the need to use an abacus or other counting frame. Even the ubiquitous croissant role is believed by many to have originated in celebration of victories against invading Islamic forces in Europe. This makes Paul Atreide's doubt and disgust at being the prisoner of oncoming history profoundly understandable because the forces that he saw his existence (not his will but the fact that he was alive), unleashing are, like the effects of the empire that Mohammad and his actual and spiritual descendents would lose upon the world, horrible means that achieved important ends. In the case of both figures, you see economics shifts resulting from plunder, the relocations of population segments as prisoners and slaves, and new bloodlines established through rape, and it is this that makes Paul a perhaps uniquely sympathetic character because, unlike all the other conquerors in human history, he is not only enlightened and civilized, but prescient: he knows and is capable of feeling for the tens of billions of lives he will be responsible for destroying by being the Kwisatz Haderach-by simply existing. On the strongly supported assumption that Herbert knew of the history in question and wrote accordingly, the idea of the Kwisatz Haderach, takes on a new depth as it is seen as a the result of God knows how many centuries of planning by the Bene Gesserit to "roll their own" prophet who, under their control, would have given them political control of the universe and put the reins of history into their hands after hundreds of lifetime's worth of planning. Given the combination of the Bene Gesserit's mistakes: their folly in not recognizing that the Kwisatz Haderach had been born, and their not trying to influence him directly or by brokering an arrangement with him, they had come to the edge of achieving their great and secret purpose only to stumble and fall at the finish line.

Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse Dune are also interesting. If you get to the end of Chapterhouse Dune, you'll really want to know what comes after but I strongly recommend reading the prequels The Butlerian Jihad, The Machine Crusade, and The Battle of Corrin before finishing the later books. They don't follow exactly what The Dune Encylopedia outlined, but contain information needed to understand what's going on in the last books. These also reflect a lack of information from Frank's notes to correctly explain all the questions raised in Chapterhouse Dune, but are worth reading. They have some great characters and events, and I think they got the ending pretty close to what Frank had intended.

You touch on a paradox of Brian vs Frank versions of the universe. The sisterhood determines the future of many individuals male and female during the novels Frank wrote, but they could not see the past of any male in their own lines. This was not a strictly genetic skill either, as we see during Heretics and Chapterhouse, when the Mothers share genetic memory (including their own) before they die. They only hoped that males would be able to see the past lives of men, with a potential of seeing all past lives. This hope is never addressed by Paul or Leto II, with their abilities to see the lives of their ancestors known, but never shared with the Sisterhood. They did not want Paul, because he had none of the weaknesses the Sisterhood hoped to exploit in order to control such a powerful person. A case could be made that males had a stronger ability where prescience is concerned, but it would be a woman who ultimately would be bred to resist the sight, ultimately building on the idea of men and women being bifurcated in their abilities with the "science" of prescience, which included clairvoyance. As for the X/Y references, that is Brian lore which conflicts with the original novels. This is why there are often arguments as to whether Paul was the Kwisatz Haderach, as it depends on what you think that person is. In terms of "seeing where a Sister dare not look," it is true. In terms of being the perfect human, able to see forward and backward through all of humanity of both species? There isn't even evidence that the God Emperor had the skill. Only by decided that Brian and Kevin J Anderson "fixed" the Dune universe with their retcon changes does the rest of this work. I like the possibilities of Frank's uncertain universe of possibilities more than KJA and Brian's inconsistent lore, but I get the attraction to the answers they offer. I also cannot stand KJA's inability to pace a novel or the bizarre magic he and Brian turned the universe into. Full disclosure

Paul claims to be more than a KH as well, he has powers the Bene Gesserit did not foresee and that a KH maybe don't normally have. Yet even he couldn't face the Golden Path.

For your theory to be correct, Alia would not have been plagued the memories of her maternal grandfather. There would have been no path for him to reach her. Once Paul had been blinded, and with the death of Chani, I had hoped that Paul would take the pressure of the Golden Path unto himself. That he did not fell in line with Herbert's idea that all charismatic leaders should come with a warning label.

It’s going to be interesting how they go about portraying the navigators of the Spacing Guild, considering the computer FX technology of this time. the reason the emperors troops are going to disguise themselves are harkonnen soldiers before the attack of house atreides is because they didnt want to know there were hostilities between the emperor(house corrino) and house atreides. but, the harkonnens are part of the landsraad so why are the harkonenns openly being antagonistic towards the atreides when they are also part of the landsraad? or are members of the landsraad allowed to war? mohiam describes the government as a triangle of the emperor, the houses of the landsraad and the spacing guild

Thank you for this video! I just finished reading Dune again, and all these terms and concepts are still swimming in my head. Your videos are really helpful. I mistakenly thought the Kwisatz Haderach was originally intended to be a woman, because I still don't quite get Herbert's ideas of prescience and male and female differences. But thanks to your video I now understand that their super-being was always supposed to be a male, so he could see both branches of humanity's genetic memory. Jessica messed up their plans by having a boy a generation too soon, thus producing a Kwisatz Haderach that wasn't under their direct control. But I guess if Paul hadn't been sent to Arrakis and ate all that spice it wouldn't have mattered anyway. So really both Jessica and (accidentally) the Emperor messed with the Bene Gesserit's plans. If Jessica had a daughter instead of a son, would that have somehow stopped the Emperor from colluding with the Harkonnens and setting in motion the plan to wipe out House Atreides? It sounds like the Bene Gesserit wanted to save both houses, so they could be united under their Kwisatz Haderach. I suppose the plan was for Jessica to have a daughter and then make Duke Leto give her up to be married to a Harkonnen, whether he wanted to or not.

Apart from the difficulty of controlling a begin with such power.. what would have been the point in even trying to control the one being that knows what needs to be done and what decisions must be taken to ensure the Golden Path..? -"We created you, now do what we want" -"but doing what you want wouldn't lead to the Golden Path" -"Well.. umm.. then.. you do what you think is best I guess..." I guess once you succeed in creating a being that is the best suited to rule supreme, the logical next step is to let go of any drive to control that being and accept that you now have to listen to him.

One of my only major complaints with the original novels is the apparent discontinuity regarding ancestral memory. In the first book, the Bene Gesserit go to a lot of trouble to create someone who can see down the male timelines. That someone would have to be male themself. But in later books, Alia inexplicably gains this ability as well, even to the point of channeling Baron Harkonnen. From what I understand, Frank Herbert was aware of this inconsistency, but ignored it because it was necessary for the plot to go the way he wanted.

Hope you guys use translation for this !!

The Bene Gesserit aren't prescient, though. They can draw on the vast experience of their ancestral memories, allowing them to develop skills over multiple generations, which gives them their edge. The suspicion of being prescient is actually a cause of concern among Bene Gesserit after the era of the kwisatz haderach, as exemplified by Odrade in the last two Frank Herbert novels.
