The DOMINICAN REPUBLIC and BASEBALL go together like peanut butter and jelly. It is (by far) the most popular sport in the country, and they have sent more players to the big leagues than any other country besides the United States. That is beyond impressive for a country of just 11 million!
Baseball is seen as a gateway for many families to escape poverty, as teenagers as young as 16 years old have the chance to sign multi-million-dollar contracts.
Each one of the 30 MLB teams have a baseball academy in the D.R., and I was lucky enough to be invited to the Arizona Diamondbacks facility and was very impressed by the talent of these young kids.
As a former baseball player and huge fan, I truly had a blast shooting this video over the last few days around the Dominican Republic and I hope you enjoy watching!!

I've been to the DR 4 times in 4 years (once every year). We had an American vs Dominican baseball match 4 years in a row. We played against kids. We have yet to beat them.

The Dr has the best Economy in the Caribbean and Centra America , also offers modern cities like Santo Domingo which is Miami 3.0 and you have Santiago and I’m sure you know about the tourism etc but it’s perfect time to invest for sure !

Tbf, that's all these kids do. They will sadly be skipping school just to go out and practice (not all of them but a decent amount). It's part of the reason our country is somewhat uneducated.

1:27 this reminds me of my childhood. Everybody, including little girls play baseball in the streets😍🇩🇴 I used to play it in my barrio almost everyday⚾️ It is a joyful sport❤

Their baseball skills are certainly impressive. Didn’t know that each of the MLB teams has an academy in the DR. Hope you cover golf next. DR’s most famous for it’s golf courses.

@@joselmel Yes it is, as a Dominican I go outside my house and see kids playing baseball in legit every street, I walk to church with family and there's kids playing baseball before it starts, my dad went to buy a new car from a local dealership where they sell American-imported cars, there were kids playing baseball, we were driving to a store named "La Sirena" there were kids playing baseball along the streets. When they say "baseball is everything" y'all may say "cap" but actually go there maybe and you will see their not joking.

@Sven Literally every country in Latin America, Caribbean, even Asia and most countries in Europe play baseball there's even world classic baseball leagues which Dominican Republic has won and they even won the Caribe Series too, their pretty good.

You should see a "vitilla" game. It's like a low-cost baseball-ish game played with a stick and the lid of one of those big bottles of water. It has it's own rules and it is a 100% Dominican game, you can see it any neighborhood

Baseball is deep in DR. And most Dominicans know someone who played baseball. Growing up, my father's friend and his brother played in the minor leagues. I'm related to an MLB player and my cousin is currently in the minors for an MLB team.

When you see kids in the street hitting a plastic water bottle lid a mile with a broomstick and fielding balls with a milk carton glove, you realize how much they love it and will do anything to play the game.

Drew, just a historical correction. Its widely known that Baseball was popularized as a national sport by the US when they invaded our island nation in 1916, they left many baseball fields behind when they terminated the occupation in 1924. Before 1916 baseball was apparently already know on a smaller scale due to the close US-Dominican ties, those ties brought the DR very close to become an American State when then secretary of state Hamilton Fish tries to annex the DR as a US territory in 1869. So, the history of Baseball in the DR goes beyond the Cuban immigration era.

So happy the D-Backs are doing this new educational program for these kids. As mentioned in the video, only 3% make it to the big leagues. It's good to see a team like the D-Backs giving back to the community by educating all prospects which will help those that don't make it have an opportunity when they go back to their home towns disappointed for not making it.

Well what is interesting is that in this case it is not the original colonizer who brought the sport. It came to the DR through Cuba, and then the Americans when the occupied the DR in the 1910s and 20s.

You forgot to mention the reason why they drop out of school so young is because the MLB can sign international players as young as 16 and start scouting them as young as 11 years old. They just recently started making these kids graduate from high school and started emphasizing how important education is. As a baseball fan you should’ve went to San Pedro de Macoris where the majority of Dominican baseball players actually come from. Sammy Sosa, Robinson Cano, Miguel Sano, George Bell, Rico Carty, Jorge Polanco and The Alou brothers are just some of the players that hail from San Pedro. It’s also the most culturally diverse city in the entire country.
