Sabaton History

3 жыл бұрын

On the 5th of May 1945, the Second World War in Europe is literally in its final days. As the German lines and Nazi state collapse into free fall, some Nazi hardliners remain fighting until the very moment surrender is announced. At Castle Itter, the lines are blurred as US and German soldiers fight side by side in a medieval castle, home to some of the highest profile prisoners of the war.

There really ought to be a movie about this, but it's probably one of those things that they'd have to tone down to make it believable. I mean, only one of the "good guys" gets killed after having survived six years of war in Europe, including Stalingrad, Normandy and Bastogne, then gets killed defending French VIPs defending a medieval Austrian Castle alongside an American football player? No way anyone would believe that! And fighting Nazis as the badguys has been so overdone in Hollywood, anyway. /Sarcasm

Make it the credits theme. Keep the overall tone of the movie serious to make the surreal parts stand out (like the prisoner pole vaulting over the walls or Gangl being killed) and then play this during the "This is where they ended up" prelude to the credits.

The battle of castle Itter is my favourite story about WW2. When I and my girlfriend was on a road trip a couple of years ago we stayed a few days in Austria. I had a book with me called "The last battle" by Stephen Harding which covers the whole event and it's great. And when I checked on google where in austria it was I found out it wasn't far from where we stayed so I convinced my girl we check it out. And damn it was cool but it was a bit weird. First it's a private property and the owner wasn't home so sadly I couldn't go inside. And for some reason there's no indication from the village that the battle even happened. No info from tourist flyers or nothing. But I didn't cry. It was awesome standing outside the gate where Jenny once defended it and looking around the steep cliff and the surrounding forest where the SS tried to overrun the castle. I'm really happy I I've been there and i think more people should. And speaking about the song I was really happy that Sabaton made a song about the story. The song is one of my favourites and VERY underrated, just as the battle it portray. So please rethink this statistic stuff when it comes to that song at least. It deserves to blast through a stadium as hard as the castle and soldiers stood against the SS.

Great episode and what a great story (and song) to go with it! It's really inspiring too, in the same way the 'No Bullets Fly' incident was; people like Gangl and Schrader putting aside their ideology and orders to instead do what's right. I have to agree with Indy: why hasn't this been made into a movie? The image of 67-year-old Paul Reynaud firing a machine gun at Nazis in a medieval castle is now stuck in my head and it's glorious.

Like most Sabaton songs, this one moves me to tears every time I really think about it. I think about Gangl and how much he saw, and how it left him guilty and disillusioned. To be killed in action as he was, trying to rescue some prisoners in an old castle, literally running to their aid, is the ultimate story of redemption. Knowing that he made the decision to help these prisoners in the first place is beautiful, but his final sacrifice really makes me break out in goosebumps. Knowing that he was needed, that he was a friend, that he was helping, that he could atone and finally do the right thing -- I hope that that's what his final moments were like. I hope that he died peacefully, knowing that he'd made all the difference. Rest in peace, Josef "Sepp" Gangl. May your eternal rest be joyous and peaceful.

That's happened more the one time in the WW2. In the Second Battle of the Alps (1945) Charles de Gaulle decided deliberately to invade the North of Italy for conquest. When the Italians saw the French Army occupy the territory, partisans, members of the RSI (Italians soldiers still loyal to Mussolini) and some german troops, joined together to protect the Alps. They fought in fortification and won despite they were outnumbered. They surrounded only when the american troops arrived, becouse they ordered the french army to stop. The President of USA himself thretened De Gaulle to stop the invasion with the stop of the supply.

You got to ask yourself this, what exactly was the conversations between the US troops and the German Wehrmacht? Not only had they been fighting each others, but this was the only time they would talk to each others that wasn't where one of them were a POW. It most have been bisarr for both sides to get used to the guy you been fighting would be the same guy who now would make sure you survived.

What casual stuff did they just talk about. Was there anyone who ever went deeper and trusted some more personal deals with the former enemy. From the stories we know of, it's clear that most soldiers weren't hating each others on the Western Front. They could have casual talks with each others when timed allowed it.
