In to Hell and Back, Sabaton sings about an actor, singer and one of the most remarkable heroes of World War Two. Audie Murphy served and fought in many different locations of the Second World War, which resulted in him being the most decorated soldier in the US army during WW2. To Hell and Back is about his actions at and after the landings at Anzio during the Allied campaign in Italy.

But two years ago, I heard the song again and got sudden flashbacks. Since then they have become the only band I've ever been dedicated enough to buy merchandise from.

As sad as it is, PTSD could only be learned about the same way war is, through painful trial and error. I am happy for the understanding we have of it now, but we must never lose it. For doing so would mean we relearn a lesson learned in blood.

It haunts me an active sitting US president was noted as saying those who suffer from PTSD are the "weak" ones. Fucking Audie Murphy, a Tiny texan, served his country, did a heroes job, and suffered from the horrors that followed. God bless him.

I had the same exact thought when watching some Vietnam news reels a few weeks ago. The people fighting and dying couldnt have been more than a year or 2 older than me (19).

I love this song and the whole Heroes album. Most only knew of his heroism and not too many knew of his struggles with PTSD (including locking himself in a hotel room for a week just to get off some of the drugs he was taking to cope). This song helps add another dimension to his story and as with most Sabaton songs, encourages one to look deeper into events or in this case, a man's biography.

🙄🙄 He feel on hard times after THE WAR in THE 60's...his struggles had nothing to do with being Haunted from the war. LMAO PTSD.... He stared recrereatioly Gambling & Drink it increasing was the cause of Audie's Issues! Not F'N PTSD PEOPLE LUV TO pull out their ASS... so A-holes Gambling you're money away with a family to support, Drinking like he was,Cut from a different Cloth from TEXAS which would of caused a deep Shame and self loathing....at his lowest he was offered multiple commercials one of which should of solved his problems and he refused for the message sent to kids. PTSD was DIAGNOSED OR CLOSE TO BEING RECONIZED then thoes Pills were prescribed to him while in Hollywood which was insanely common there. soon as he realized soomhelp sleep soon as he realized he was becoming dependent on them for sleep he looked him self in a hotel emerged when he was clean.

The Audie Murphy Monument is on the Crest of Brush Mountain, on the Appalachian Trail, near Catawba, VA. Many people have climbed to see the monument and leave mementos. His bravery is still remembered today. Listening to this brings me back to the day, I climbed the mountain and had a chance to remember. Thank you. BCM

Even with a song, a movie, and idol level fame for the military and civilians alike... And yet so few people know about him, this is the kind of things that should be taught at school, not just remembering dates like a bloody calendar; the thing I love about history is that we can know how people felt in situations we could only imagine. Let's make Audie Murphy popular again (more than what he already is).

I think that Joakim's statement about how the song is more so about celebrating Murphy's achievements than feeling sorrowful for his passing is why I really like the song. Also the (seemingly heavy) incorporation of lines from Murphy's poetry into the song is quite cool.

I can't stop the tears from flowing when I hear this song. it hits me so hard as a veteran. I didn't experience a fraction of what Murphy went through and for that I give thanks to God.

To Hell and Back isn't just one of Sabaton's best songs (and has one of the most interesting stories behind it), but I think it's also their best music video. Seeing that video made think of the song in a whole new light. It's not just a song about some awesome guy doing awesome things, it's a tragedy of a hero suffering from all the death that he experienced (much of which was by his own hand).

Indeed it is one of the most interesting stories behind a Sabaton song, but I think that the story behind No Bullets Fly is more interesting. It's very close mind you, but the fact that Lt. Col. Brown and his would be killer/escort met 45 years after the war and then became close friends makes it one of those stories that is truly stanger than fiction.

My dad was on a destroyer offshore at Anzio. How that generation came home and did so much for America in the "peace" that followed, despite the ghosts the brought back with them is amazing. They didn't have the support (even if its still not exactly right) our troops have today, nor even the acceptance of PTSD as a real issue.

they were cheered as heroes and PTSD" was called battle fatigue. What we call "ptsd" was documented in Greek literature and plays and were used to instruct civilians about the sufferings of war veterans, they were much more advanced than we are today.

He is actually THE most decorated soldier in US Military history with LtGen. Chesty Puller coming in at a close second. The U.S. Army has a "Board" called the Audie Murphy Board and is one of the most sought after boards to win.

9:40 hell, that was deep, and I too was close to cover my face in tears. A schoolkid that tried to do what he could, time after a time, and got enlisted at last, then did what he could. And after all that, He playd himself in a movie, just trying to silence voices that hounted him almost every night, reliving everything He did and saw that made him a Hero. Never He, and many young mens of the WW2, had imagined, what it would cost them, to just survive the war.

Audie was my 2nd cousin. He did join the Army before his 18th birthday. His father had abandoned the family, his mother had died. His older sister (his legal guardian) signed a waiver so that he could join while still 17 yrs old. He sent money back to his family from his military salary to help his sister to try to keep the family together. We are very proud of our relationship to Audie & his many accomplishments. When Veterans Day comes around every year, he is the eptimom of the word "veteran".

This song introduced me to his "Crosses Grow On Anzio" poem, and that poem inspired me to do one of my first digital drawings ever, and it's by far my favorite drawing ever (that I have done at least.) And the entire time I drew it I was listening to this song on repeat. I wish I could share it with Joakim and the rest of the band, unfortunately I don't know how I could.

Being a huge Western fan, I first came across Audie Murphy the actor & only knew about his exploits during WW11 after seeing his film autobiography 'To Hell And Back'. I remember hearing about his untimely death in 1971 (yes, I am that old!) Was really pleased that Sabaton created this song about him; I love it!

I love Sabaton not just for the historical value they bring in their songs but they immortalize heroes such as Audie Murphy. Even though he will never leave the history books music can speak volumes to people who may not get the same feelings through reading about it in a book. i really love the song, but i only wanted to know more about the history after not just hearing the amazing tail for "No Bullets Fly" but also seeing in the history Calendar and seeing Audie Murphy died 30 before i was born. i nearly shed tears once more for a Sabaton song after realizing his poem is in this song. you guys are masters of lyrics.

This will always be my favorite Sabaton song. This is the song that introduced me to Sabaton I was watching a tribute video on KZfaq To Ragnar Lothbrok and This song was used in the video. The Lyrics of the Song started jumping out at me and I begin to think the Song Was about Audie Murphy. So I looked in the description of the video and saw the name of the band and song which I had already guessed was To hell and back. I typed it in watched the video and was thinking how cool and unique it was for a Band to write a song about Audie Murphy. I clicked on some suggested videos of Sabaton on the To Hell and Back video and my journey to become a Sabaton fan begun.

I'm surprised that they didn't bring up or mention the time Audie gunned down a German squadron with a tank mounted M2, while tanked being fully loaded with gas and ammo at the time was in flames and could blow at any moment. Never giving up and never surrendering, he called in the enemy positions fur artillery bombardment and then advanced forward, climbing up onto a compromised tank, proceeding to use it's mounted M2, gunning down the advancing German soldiers while under heavy fire and great risk. That day Audie looked death square in the face and said "Not today Reaper, Take these Krauts instead" saving many lives while putting his own at risk. Audie Murphy was, is and always will be an American Hero.

Honestly, for all his gallantry, the part about Audie Murphy that sticks out most to me is just how much of a good dude he was. It would've been easy, hell it'd be completely understandable, if he'd have gotten the big head after everything he'd accomplished. By all accounts, though, that didn't happen. He remained a humble, kind person well after the war; the kind of guy that, when invited to an expensive Hollywood shindig, spent more time with in the kitchen with wait staff (most of whom were black), hanging out with them and complimenting them on their cooking. Despite his financial troubles in the 60s, he outright refused to appear in liquor or cigarette commercials because he was aware of how much influence he'd have over any young people watching. Audie Murphy wasn't just a badass war hero, he was the kind of guy you *want* to be like.

I knew about Audie Murphy from the film he stared in as himself. When you did the song, I decided to read his memoir and finished reading it a couple weeks ago. It was truly was a phenomenal piece of literature. I recommend it for anyone who loves history. Keep it up Indy, Sabaton. Can't wait for the new album. 🤘🎵🇺🇸

The first song of Sabaton. I ever heard was Primo Victoria on a Hellgate London GMV years ago and been a fan since. Would love to see them in concert here in the states in my area. They are right up there with Disturbed as one of my favorite bands. I love the history that they move me to go look for from their music. Keep up the good work guys, better than any history teacher i ever had.

I adore this song. I have always heard Audie spoke of with great respect. My mom was a fan and my dad, a Korean vet-also with PTSD, saw him as a great man. Dad would refer to him by his rank frequently. Showing there is still a link between the Army and the Air Force!

My wife's grandfather actually was good friends with him in 1950s I brought him up to him once and he talked about how he knew him and he had a smile on his face. For all I know Audie murphy was and still a hero among heroes

You completely summed up his appeal. Grit TV was showing The Kid from Texas, and I almost changed the channel. Glad I didn't. Even the films that are labeled "B," he's in them and holding his own. I just finished his book and saw the film, and wish more people would too. This is the reason that I heard this song, so excellent.

I've known the name Audie Murphy for a while, but this is the first time I've heard his story. His horse ranch in California was where a neighborhood in my hometown now sits, and the area carries his name. Now I know why. Even with no connection myself, I'm honored to know a man like him was such a huge part of my area

I think Audie's son was particularly cool that the lyrics included his dad's poem and the video touched on his trauma and nightmares of PTSD...read the book a long time ago.
