Our time was very limited and driving up meant having to drive back, so we only stayed in Southern California.

It's not such a cool place. It's full of criminal kids hiding out and doing drugs / making drugs, stealing from people, etc. All the bad stuff is there. It's well hidden. You're both lucky to make it out of there safely.
